Does Wildfire Ash Damage Car Paint? Ash, Bird Droppings, Jacaranda and Pollen in LA
Yes, in two ways. Dry ash is gritty, so wiping or dusting it off scratches the clear coat. Wet ash turns strongly alkaline: water leached from burned-home ash measured pH 12.5–12.7 (USGS). Rinse it off with a gentle spray, wash with a mild car soap, and never wipe it dry.

Why ash hurts paint: grit when dry, caustic when wet
Ash damages paint in two ways, and the fix for both is water used the right way.
Scratching. Ash is a fine grit. Drag it across the paint with a towel, a duster or a dry mitt and it cuts fine scratches into the clear coat. LA County Public Health's wildfire FAQ (updated March 2025) says it plainly: "Avoid scrubbing dry ash, as it can scratch paint" (Public Health). Kia says the same of any dust: wiping it off "with a dry cloth will scratch the finish" (Kia).
Etching. Ash is alkaline, not acidic as some detailing pages say. After the October 2007 Southern California fires, the U.S. Geological Survey ran water through ash samples. Water from burned-home ash reached pH 12.5–12.7, and from wildland ash 9.8–10.9. USGS calls this "caustic alkalinity" and says it starts when ash meets rainwater (USGS). In LA that can be a light rain, a sprinkler or dew on a parked car. The alkalinity "may diminish over time" as rain and air neutralize it, but USGS gives no rate, so don't wait for it.
Why LA ash is the harsher kind. House-fire ash tested more caustic than wildland ash. The January 2025 Palisades and Eaton fires destroyed 6,845 and 9,419 structures (CAL FIRE, CAL FIRE). California's OEHHA says ash from burned buildings is "generally more hazardous than forest ash". It can carry lead, arsenic, asbestos and caustic materials, and contact with wet ash "may cause chemical burns" to skin (OEHHA). That is a reason to wear gloves, as well as a reason to get the ash off the paint.
Wildfire ash on car paint: what to do
- 01
Cover up first
Gloves, long sleeves and goggles. Where you can't avoid stirring ash up, OEHHA recommends an N-95 or P-100 mask rather than a dust or surgical mask (OEHHA).
- 02
Don't wipe, dust or blow it
No towel, duster or dry wiper pass: that is the scrubbing Public Health warns against. No leaf blower either; OEHHA rules it out because it puts ash back in the air.
- 03
Rinse it off gently, top down
A gentle hose spray removes the loose ash, as Public Health advises. Flood the panels with low pressure; don't blast ash into gaps and seals. Roof and glass first, then hood and trunk, then the sides.
- 04
Wash with a mild car soap
Then wash with mild detergent and water. Use plenty of suds, a clean mitt rinsed after every panel, and a second bucket of rinse water. The full method is in how to wash a car step by step.
- 05
Rinse well and dry
Rinse thoroughly, then dry with clean microfiber towels. Any ash left in the water can dry back onto the paint.
- 06
Clear the intakes and the cabin
Public Health says to check the ventilation intakes, usually the grille below the windshield, and to clean any ash inside with a HEPA vacuum and a damp cloth (Public Health).
- 07
Keep the ash water out of the drain
Public Health and OEHHA both say to avoid washing ash into storm drains. Rinse where the water soaks into landscaping, not toward the gutter. LA's runoff rules: is it legal to wash my car in my driveway.
After the wash, check by touch. Put a thin plastic bag over your fingertips and run them over the clean paint. If it still feels gritty, residue has bonded: an iron remover, a tar remover and then a clay bar take it off; see is clay bar treatment worth it. Dull patches that stay after a proper wash have usually etched into the clear coat. Those need polishing, like etched water spots.
LA fallout on paint: what each does and how fast to act
| Fallout | What it does | How fast | How to get it off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wildfire ash | Scratches when wiped dry; strongly alkaline once wet | Before the next dew, fog or sprinkler cycle | Gentle rinse, mild soap, rinse, dry (steps above) |
| Bird droppings | "Highly corrosive"; they "may damage painted surfaces in just a few hours" (Kia) | As soon as you see them | Lay a soaked microfiber on top for a few minutes, then lift it off. Don't scrub |
| Jacaranda blossoms | Sticky, because aphids feeding on them leave sugary honeydew; they dirty windshields (LAPL) | Same day in heat; don't let the drops bake on | Soak, then wash. Don't scrape off dried blossoms |
| Pollen | Fine dust that scratches if wiped off dry | Within a few days, the limit Ceramic Pro sets for coated cars (Ceramic Pro) | Rinse it off, or see the no-wash options below |
| Tree sap | On Kia's list of deposits that "can damage your vehicle's finish if not removed immediately" (Kia) | Before it hardens | A tar and sap remover on cool paint, then a wash; clay for what's left |
Kia adds that "even prompt washing with plain water may not completely remove all these deposits", so wash with soap. The rest of the LA calendar, from the rainy months to Santa Ana days: how often should you wash your car.
Is my paint ruined from bird poop?
Rarely. Wash the spot and dry it, then look at it in low, raking light. If there is no mark, the paint is fine. If you see a dull outline that feels smooth to the touch, the dropping has etched the clear coat. A shallow etch is a low spot in that layer, and polishing levels the clear coat around it until the mark is gone. A deep one can be softened but may stay visible.
Bird droppings on a matte car are another matter. Matte paint can't be polished. GM's bulletin for its matte paint says not to buff out scratches or scuffs, because buffing "will polish the matte paint", and that the only correction is a repainted panel (GM). An etch is the same kind of damage. Kia's matte instructions for droppings: "promptly pre-rinse and if needed, gently remove it using a damp microfiber cloth and special cleaner" (Kia PS746). On matte, speed is the only protection.
How to get pollen off a car without washing
Pollen is the one LA fallout you can often remove without a full wash, as long as nothing dry touches the paint.
- Rinse only. A hose rinse takes off loose pollen without contact. Dry it, or the water spots.
- Blow it off a dry car. A blower or compressed air lifts a light coat of pollen. Never use one on ash.
- A rinseless or waterless spray works on a light film only. Use plenty of product, with a fresh towel face for each pass. How the products work: how does waterless car wash work.
- Spot-clean a coated car with the coating maker's detail spray and a clean microfiber towel. Ceramic Pro gives the same advice for droppings, sap and pollen (Ceramic Pro).
A thick yellow coat, or pollen glued down by dew, is a wash.
Is it safe to drive with ash on the car?
For a car the fire didn't touch, yes, once you can see out. The ash on the body is a paint problem, not a driving one, so wash it off within the day. Before you drive:
- Clear the glass with water first. Use the hose or plenty of washer fluid. Dry wiper blades drag the grit across the windshield.
- Close the windows and set the air to recirculate. That is the EPA's advice for smoke in a car. Slow down where smoke cuts visibility (EPA).
- Check the intakes below the windshield for ash, as Public Health advises.
If the car was in the fire, don't drive it. For a fire-damaged electric or hybrid car, Public Health says: "Do not start, move, tow, or charge" it (Public Health).
Will ceramic coating protect against wildfire ash?
It helps, but it doesn't make the car ash-proof. A coating's slick surface lets a rinse carry ash off more easily. Ceramic Pro calls its own coatings "not bulletproof", and warns that tree sap can etch and scratch them (Ceramic Pro). Dry-wiped ash scratches a coating just as it scratches paint, so a coated car gets the same rinse, the same soap and the same speed. What a coating does and doesn't do: what is ceramic coating.
Professional help
When to call a pro
Call a pro if the paint still feels rough after a careful wash, or if ash has gone through a dew or a rain. Do the same for droppings that have left a dull ring, or any fallout on matte paint. Our paint decontamination uses an iron remover, a tar remover and a clay bar, in that order. Ash is rinsed and lifted with plenty of lubricant, never dry-wiped, on a water-capture mat so the ash water doesn't reach the gutter. Booked on its own, it ends with a Gtechniq C2 spray sealant. Marks etched into the clear coat are polished out in paint correction, after a test section. After an ashfall, a full detail wet-lifts the ash, never dry-wiping it, and checks the air intakes.
Questions
Does rain wash wildfire ash off a car?
Not reliably. A light rain or drizzle wets the ash without rinsing it away, and water is what starts the caustic alkalinity USGS measured (USGS). If rain falls on an ash-covered car, rinse and wash it as soon as you can rather than waiting for a heavier storm.
Can I take an ash-covered car through an automatic car wash?
Not through a brush or cloth tunnel: it scrubs dry ash across the paint, which Public Health says not to do. A touchless wash at least rinses without touching the paint, though you can't set the pressure or the chemicals. What each kind of car wash does to paint: will a car wash damage my vehicle.
How do I clean ash inside the car?
Use a HEPA vacuum and a damp cloth, as LA County Public Health advises (Public Health). An ordinary vacuum blows fine particles back out, as OEHHA warns, and a dry duster spreads them. If the cabin still smells of smoke after cleaning, see how to remove smoke odor from a car.
Are jacaranda blossoms bad for car paint?
The blossoms themselves are soft. The sticky part is honeydew, the sugary residue aphids leave after feeding on the flowers (LAPL), and it bakes onto paint and glass in the sun. Soak the spots and wash them off the same day, and don't scrape off dried blossoms. Spots that have baked on can need a sap remover.
