What changes the price:

  • Rows of leather seats: a two-seat coupe against a 3-row SUV.
  • Perforated or ventilated seats: slower work with less water.
  • Light leather with dye transfer, ink or makeup: that is the deep clean.
  • Heavy soil or sand in the seams: the heavy-soil add-on, $59, agreed from photos before booking.

Cracks, tears and color loss are repair work, which we don't do (see below). All our prices: car detailing cost in Los Angeles.

What's included in car leather cleaning and conditioning

  1. 01

    Photo quote

Book leather cleaning with one photo per row of seats and a close-up of the worst spot. Tell us if the seats are perforated or ventilated, white or cream, or synthetic, as in a Tesla.

  2. 02

    Walk-round and test spot

Cracks, color loss, dye transfer and stains that may not lift are named before we start. Then the cleaner is tested in a hidden spot: GM's leather bulletin rules out any product that shows "color transfer to the wipe or a change in appearance" when "tested in an inconspicuous location" (GM).

  3. 03

    Dry work first

Seams, bolsters and perforations vacuumed with a soft brush attachment. GM: "Before any cleaning product is used, vacuum to remove all loose dirt." After an ash day, a HEPA-filter vacuum and no compressed air (see the LA table below).

  4. 04

Clean by hand, section by section

GYEON Q²M LeatherCleaner, Natural for routine soil and Strong for heavy soil, goes on a microfiber towel, not onto the seat; Lexus: "Do NOT apply cleaners directly to the leather" (Lexus). Your carmaker decides the brush. GM's bulletin says a soft bristle brush "should be used to safely work the cleaner into the leather grain" and "Never use a STIFF brush"; Lexus says hand cleaning only. So a soft brush goes into grain and seams only where the carmaker allows it.

  5. 05

    Wipe and dry

A clean, damp microfiber lifts the residue and a dry one finishes. On perforated seats: minimal moisture, and nothing soaked through to the back, as Porsche's service note describes (Porsche TI 7413). Seat heating and ventilation stay off.

  6. 06

    Condition to a low sheen

A water-based conditioner, worked in and buffed off. GM describes its own leather restorer as one that "adds luster without adding gloss", and in a feature in Porsche's newsroom, a master detailer's cleaned leather "changes from shiny to semi-matt" (Porsche Newsroom). Synthetic leather such as Tesla's gets no conditioner.

  7. 07

    Protect (deep clean)

GYEON Q² LeatherShield EVO, a ceramic leather coating that GYEON says "forms an invisible barrier that reduces wear, color transfer, and contamination while maintaining the natural look and feel of the leather", for up to 18 months (GYEON). It is for modern coated leather, not aniline or open-pore hides, so the walk-round identifies the hide first.

  8. 08

    Hand-over

Seats dry to the touch, a walk-round with you, photos before and after. If the car stays outside, it dries in shade: Porsche's procedure dries seats away from direct sunlight.

Car leather interior cleaning, as we do it, is every leather surface you touch, cleaned by hand where the car is parked. Interior car detailing is the whole cabin.

Our leather care process, from photo quote to hand-over

Between visits. Wipe spills early: Lexus says to clean "when soiling is first noticed". A regular maintenance visit keeps it that way: mobile car wash subscription.

Why the method matters. Lexus's leather-care bulletin for 2010–2018 models says "damage caused by unapproved cleaning methods are NOT eligible for replacement under warranty" (Lexus).

Pigmented, semi-aniline, perforated or vegan: how we treat each leather interior

How we treat each leather interior
MaterialWhat it isHow we clean it
Pigmented leather"a finish containing pigment particles that render the finish completely opaque" (Leather Research Laboratory, University of Cincinnati)Cleaner on the towel, a soft brush where the carmaker allows, then conditioner
Semi-aniline leatherAniline-dyed, "incorporating a small quantity of pigment, not so much as to conceal the natural characteristics of the hide" (same source)Lighter pressure, less moisture, a test spot first
Aniline leather"has not received any coating of pigmented finish" (same source)Minimal moisture, a test spot, by hand only; no coating
Perforated or ventilated seatsPorsche: "Perforated leather becomes darker following contact with moisture" (Porsche TI 7413)Perforations vacuumed, cleaner on the cloth, distilled water for water marks, never soaked through, dried out of the sun with heating and ventilation off
Synthetic ("vegan") leather, as in a TeslaTesla advises warm water and mild soap: "Using other cleaning agents, disinfectants, conditioners, or protectants is not recommended" (Tesla)Tesla's method; no conditioner
Alcantara and suede-like trim (not leather)Alcantara: "we don't recommend using steam machines", and don't wet it excessively (Alcantara)A barely damp, well-wrung cloth, then a soft brush once dry; the rest of the cabin is interior car detailing

The definitions are general, not automotive: we identify the finish on your car, not from its badge.

What LA does to leather seats: heat, sand, sunscreen and ash

LA conditions, what they do to leather seats, and what we do
LA conditionWhat it does to leatherWhat we do
Summer sun in the Valley, Santa Clarita, Simi Valley and inlandIn an Arizona test on 100°F-plus days, seats in cars parked in the sun averaged 123°F after one hour (ASU and UC San Diego, 2018). GM: the interior "can experience extreme heat, which can cause stains to set quickly" (GM).Spills and body oils cleaned early; we work in shade or a garage on hot days
Beach sand from Santa Monica, the South Bay and Long BeachGrit in the seams and on the bolsters; Lexus: "Remove loose dust or dirt prior to cleaning"Seams vacuumed before any liquid touches the leather
Sunscreen, lotion and makeupTesla: clothing, accessories and cosmetics "may contain dyes or oils which can transfer onto the seats", and such stains "cannot always be safely cleaned off"Stain treatment in the deep clean; we say first what may remain
Dark jeans on light leatherGM: "Dye transfer will happen any time a natural fiber like cotton, silk, wool, or suede comes into contact with leather. The lighter the leather color, the more quickly the dye transfer will appear."Regular cleaning, and the deep clean for set transfer, with no promise. Light seats and dark jeans? GYEON LeatherShield EVO cuts dye transfer for up to 18 months.
Wildfire ash in the cabinLA County Public Health: "If ash has entered the vehicle's interior, vacuum with a HEPA filter and wipe surfaces with a damp cloth" (Public Health). Ash from burned homes and buildings may carry "metals like lead, cadmium, nickel and arsenic" (OEHHA).A HEPA-filter vacuum first, then a damp wipe; we don't blow ash around with compressed air

The heat figures come from Tempe, Arizona; no LA measurement of seat temperatures was found.

What leather cleaning can't fix

  • Cracks and peeling. Lexus says cracking, peeling and dye transfer occur in "the protective coating of the leather top coat". A conditioner does not rebuild a coating.
  • Tears, holes, color loss, worn driver's bolsters. These need a leather repair specialist; we don't repair leather.
  • Set dye transfer and some cosmetic stains. They "cannot always be safely cleaned off" (Tesla).
  • Dark rings around perforations after rain or a spill. Porsche says these spots "are not damaged areas on the seat cover"; distilled water and a slow dry are the fix.
  • Reupholstery or a cloth-to-leather conversion. Not offered.

We tell you which of these we see before we start, not after.

What we need where your car is parked

  • Room to open every door fully, wherever the car is parked: a driveway, carport, private lot, garage bay or the street.
  • Shade or a garage on hot days.
  • Seat heating and ventilation switched off before we start.
  • Keys or access, and the building's OK in a building garage.

Leather seat cleaning FAQ

How much does leather seat cleaning and conditioning cost in Los Angeles?

For a sedan, the leather clean & condition is $179 and the deep clean & protect $259; SUVs and 3-row vehicles are priced by size in the table above. Added to a maintenance or interior detail visit, it is $89. The price buys every leather surface cleaned by hand, your carmaker's method and the visit to your address, and you see it before you book.

How long does leather seat cleaning take, and when can I sit on the seats?

It depends on the rows of seats and the leather: a sedan's clean & condition is a shorter visit than a deep clean of a perforated 3-row interior, and we confirm the time when you book. Leather takes very little water, so the seats are dry to the touch before we hand back the keys. Heating and ventilation stay off until then, and a car left outside dries in shade.

Do you steam clean leather seats?

No. Lexus's leather-care bulletin says vehicle leather should "ONLY be cleaned by hand with water and mild detergent", and GM's specifies mild, neutral-pH cleaners. In a feature in Porsche's newsroom, a master detailer steams the floor mats but gives the leather a leather cleaner. We keep steam off leather too. Hot-water extraction is for cloth seats and carpet: mobile car shampoo.

Can you remove stains, ink or jeans dye transfer from light leather?

Often, not always. GM says dye transfer happens whenever cotton or other natural fibers touch leather, and shows faster on light colors; Tesla says dyes and oils from clothing and cosmetics "cannot always be safely cleaned off". Fresh stains lift more easily, since heat sets them (GM). We test in a hidden spot and tell you what may remain before we start; stain work is part of the deep clean.

Is leather cleaning safe for perforated, heated or ventilated seats?

Yes, with much less water. Porsche's service note says perforated leather darkens near the holes when it gets damp; its fix is distilled water on a fine-pore sponge, never soaked through to the back, and drying out of direct sun with seat heating and ventilation off. We vacuum the perforations first and put the cleaner on the cloth, never on the seat.

Can you clean semi-aniline or aniline leather, or synthetic "vegan" leather?

Yes, each with its own method. Semi-aniline and aniline leather carry little or no pigmented finish (University of Cincinnati Leather Research Laboratory), so they get less moisture, lighter pressure and a test spot first, and aniline gets no coating. Synthetic leather is cleaned the way its maker says: Tesla, for example, advises warm water and mild soap and no conditioner. We identify the finish on your car before we start.

Do you repair cracked, torn or faded leather seats?

No: this is cleaning and conditioning. Lexus says cracking and peeling happen in the leather's protective top coat, and a conditioner doesn't rebuild a coating. Tears, color loss and worn bolsters need a leather repair specialist, and we don't reupholster or convert cloth seats to leather. We tell you what we see before we start, so you know what cleaning will and won't change.

Will conditioning make my seats shiny, and do you add protection?

No shine: clean factory leather has a low sheen. GM warns that silicone and wax-based products raise gloss unevenly and can cause reflections in the windshield, and its own restorer "adds luster without adding gloss"; in Porsche's newsroom feature, leather goes "from shiny to semi-matt" once clean. For protection, the deep clean adds GYEON Q² LeatherShield EVO on coated leather, which GYEON rates for up to 18 months.
