Tint shades: how dark, and where it can go

VLT is the share of visible light a window lets through: a lower number is darker.

Rear window: any shade when the car has outside mirrors on both sides. The installer meters your windows before choosing shades; how each shade looks, day and night: 5, 20, 35 and 50% tint compared. And on the coast a clear front film still earns its place: UVA passes through cloud cover (Skin Cancer Foundation) and through tempered side glass, while UV film blocks more than 99% of UVA and UVB (Skin Cancer Foundation). Torrance's grey May and June mornings don't stop it.

California law

Vehicle Code 26708, as we install it

  • Rear side windows: any shade (26708(b)(4)).
  • Rear window: any shade if the car has outside mirrors on both sides (26708(b)(8)).
  • Front side windows, the windows immediately left and right of the front seat: only clear, colorless film with at least 88% VLT, with a certificate signed by the installing company in the car; torn or bubbled film must be removed or replaced (26708(d)). Why a "70" film still fails there: front side windows.
  • Windshield: transparent film on the topmost part only (a tinted strip is allowed), its bottom edge at least 29 inches above the undepressed driver's seat; not red or amber, no opaque lettering, and no more glare thrown at other drivers than the bare windshield (26708(c)). Clear film on the whole windshield needs a dermatologist's certificate (26708(e)), and we don't install full-windshield film at all.
  • Medical exceptions: removable sun-screening devices on the front side windows, green, gray or neutral smoke with at least 35% luminous transmittance, with a physician's or optometrist's letter and never used in darkness (26708.2); or clear film on any window with a dermatologist's certificate.
  • Torrance has no tint rules of its own: Vehicle Code 21 makes the code uniform statewide and bars local ordinances on the matters it covers.

California also bars anyone from installing film that darkens or colors the glass except as 26708 allows (26708.5), so on the front side windows we install only clear, certified film. Law checked September 15, 2026.

Window tint Torrance FAQ

How much does window tint cost in Torrance?

On a sedan, standard carbon film is $329 and ceramic $499. Clear front film made to meet Vehicle Code 26708(d) is $299 for the pair, and the install in Torrance is included. The film line, the number of windows and old film to remove move the price: car window tinting prices for every car size.

Can you tint my car at home or at work in Torrance?

Yes: in a home garage, a shaded driveway, or an apartment or office parking structure with the building's permission. We bring water and power; you give us room to open the doors fully. At an office structure, the car is tinted while you work. The full process: mobile window tinting.

Does Torrance have its own window tint rules?

No. Vehicle Code 21 makes the code uniform statewide, so state rules apply in Torrance: any shade on the rear side windows and rear window (with outside mirrors on both sides); clear, colorless film of 88% or more, with a signed certificate, on the front side windows; a top strip only on the windshield. We fit only clear, certified film up front, and no full-windshield film.

Can you install tint on a cool, grey day in Torrance?

Yes, under cover: a home garage or a parking structure. In the cool, damp weeks (Torrance Airport's normal highs are 71.8°F in May and 73.9°F in June), film cures more slowly, so the roll-down wait runs past the 48 hours 3M's care guide sets for our 3M films, and light haze can take longer to clear. We give you the day at hand-over.

My car came with dark tint on the front windows. Can you fix that in Torrance?

Yes. We remove the old front film at your address, then fit clear, certified film if you want UV and heat protection up front; we never refit dark film on the front pair. Removal is $199 for a sedan and the clear front pair $299. Dark film can stay on the rear windows. See car window tint.

Do you also tint home and office windows in Torrance?

Yes. Torrance is inside our service area, and home and office film is priced on its own: 3M heat-and-UV film for a south- or west-facing room, frosted privacy film for bathrooms and street-facing glass, and safety film. The films and prices: house window tint.

More about Window Tint Torrance

California tint law is one statute, Vehicle Code 26708, and this is how it reads from the installer's side:

Standard or ceramic film on a Torrance car

On a sedan, ceramic is $499 against $329 for standard carbon. At the 35 shade our two films come out close on UV and on total solar energy, and apart on infrared heat: the heat numbers by film type. Both carry the maker's warranty, registered by the installer.

The gap is infrared heat. With a 78.1°F normal high in August and September at Torrance Airport (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), standard film is a sound choice for a car that parks in a garage. Ceramic earns its price if the car sits in open sun, in a beach lot or on a rooftop level, or if you commute inland, where August normals run near 97°F in the west Valley. Whether the difference pays: is ceramic window tint worth the extra cost. Our ceramic line: ceramic tint, installed at your place in Torrance.
