These are City of Pasadena rules. Altadena (unincorporated LA County), South Pasadena and San Marino have their own codes and water suppliers.

1. Driveways and detached garages, or a building garage. City-wide, 57.5% of Pasadena households rent; 42.7% of homes are detached houses and 44.2% are in buildings of five or more units. In 91101, the downtown core with Playhouse Village and the north end of South Lake Avenue, 84.8% rent and 83.4% of homes are in buildings of five or more units, while in 91104 and 91107 (Bungalow Heaven, Hastings Ranch, East Pasadena) about two thirds are detached houses (ACS 2020–2024). North and east of downtown, the visit is usually in a driveway or detached garage; downtown and around South Lake, in a building garage. In a building garage the deck stays dry: Pasadena's code bars washing down parking areas (PMC 13.10.032(F)), so nothing is hosed and the bay is left as we found it. The manager or HOA approves the visit before we book the day.

2. The 2–6 a.m. rule. No vehicle may stand on a Pasadena street or alley from 2 to 6 a.m. without an all-night permit, with a few exceptions (PMC 10.44.010). The ban was "first enacted in 1921", took its current hours in 1948, and permits have been allowed since 1971 (parking FAQ). So Pasadena cars sleep in a driveway, carport or garage, and that is where the visit usually happens; a car parked at the curb by day is washed there, on the capture mat.

3. Water and the street. Pasadena allows washing a vehicle only with a hand-held bucket or a hand-held hose with a shut-off nozzle, and bars washing down driveways, parking areas and sidewalks; these rules hold at every shortage level (PMC 13.10.032(I) and (F)). Its storm-drain code bans any discharge that is not entirely stormwater, exempting "washing or cleaning of noncommercial vehicles, but other than by a commercial car wash" (PMC 8.70.060). We wash rinseless from a bucket, with water we bring, on a capture mat under the car, in the driveway, garage, lot or at the curb. Nothing runs to the gutter, and the mat's water leaves with us.

4. Hard water. PWP's 2026 water quality report puts hardness at 202–256 ppm, 12 to 15 grains per gallon, averaging about 222 ppm (PWP report), and PWP's own FAQ calls Pasadena's water "very hard": the spots on glassware are the minerals left when it evaporates (PWP FAQ). What it leaves on a glass it leaves on paint, so no panel is left to air-dry: each one is dried by hand as soon as it is rinsed, out of direct sun. Spots already etched in are water spot removal.

5. Heat, dry months, sap and dust. Between June and September barely half an inch of rain falls in Pasadena, 0.03 inches of it in August, and about 80% of the year's 20 inches falls from December to March (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). July to September are the hottest months. Dust, pollen, and sap and droppings from street trees stay on the paint until someone washes them off, and water dries fast in the sun, so we wash in shade. 6. Ash, and Red Flag days. The Eaton Fire started on 7 January 2025 near Altadena; it burned 14,021 acres and destroyed 9,419 structures before containment on 31 January (CAL FIRE). For vehicles, LA County Public Health advises removing loose ash with a gentle hose spray, then a mild detergent, never scrubbing dry ash, checking the ventilation intakes and vacuuming an ash-filled interior with a HEPA vacuum (Public Health). So ash is lifted with a gentle rinse first and a mild shampoo second, and a dry towel never touches it. On Red Flag days, posted streets in the city's fire hazard zones bar parking (PMC 10.65; Pasadena Fire): if the street is posted and our vehicle can't park off it, the visit moves to another day.
