California law

Which window takes what, under Vehicle Code 26708

  • Rear side windows: any shade.
  • Back glass: any shade, if the car has outside mirrors on both sides.
  • Front side windows: clear, colorless film of 88% or more only, with the installing company's certificate in the car; torn or bubbling film must be removed or replaced. Why a 70% film fails up front.
  • Windshield strip: clear material at the top whose bottom edge sits at least 29 inches above the undepressed driver's seat, measured 5 inches in front of the backrest with the seat all the way back and down. Not red or amber, and no more glare than the bare windshield.
  • Full windshield: clear 88% film only, with a dermatologist's certificate. We don't install full-windshield film.
  • Medical letter: the exemption covers removable sun screens (a frame, temporary fasteners or a roller shade), not applied film, so we don't fit dark front film on a letter.

Window tint FAQ

How much does window tint cost in Los Angeles?

Carbon film costs $329 and ceramic $499 for a sedan; an SUV in ceramic is $599. The price moves with the film, the number and size of windows, curved back glass and any old film to remove. Most of it is the film itself and the hours of careful prep and fitting.

How much does it cost to tint just the two front windows, or one window?

The front pair in clear IR film, the only film California allows there, is $299, with the installer's certificate. One window is $99. We don't fit darker film on the front side windows: it isn't legal, and it is the usual reason for a tint ticket.

How much does window tint removal cost?

Removing old tint costs $199 for a sedan and $299 for an SUV. The film and its adhesive come off slowly, with care around the rear defroster lines. California requires torn or bubbling film on the front side windows to be removed or replaced (VC 26708(d)(5)).

Will you put 70% tint on my front side windows?

No. The front side windows take only clear film of 88% or more, so we fit 70% or darker at the back and clear IR film at the front, with the installer's certificate for the glovebox. Why a 70% film fails up front: front side windows.

What's the darkest legal tint in California, and who installs it in LA?

Rear side windows and back glass can take any shade, even 5% limo; the back glass needs mirrors on both sides. Front side windows take clear 88% film only, and the windshield a strip at the top. MNG installs to these rules at your home or office, and the installer hands over the certificate for the front pair.

Do you tint windshields, and what does it cost?

A sun strip across the top, yes, $129; full-windshield film, no. What we fit is under windshield tint in California, and how the legal line is measured is in the 29-inch line.

Got a window tint ticket? Can you fix it?

Yes. We remove the front film and fit clear IR film with the installer's certificate: removal $199 plus clear front film $299. Clearing the ticket itself, with the deadline and the court fee: what a tint ticket costs, and how to clear one.

How do I choose the best window tint shop near me in Los Angeles?

Look for a named film with the maker's warranty registered by the installer, meter readings before and after, a written certificate for the front windows, a shop that refuses illegal front shades, a written price by car size, and photos of its own work. That is the standard we hold every install to.

More about Car Window Tint

What's included: film, shade and a legal fit

Every job is three decisions made together before any film is cut: which film suits how and where you drive, which shade goes on which window under California law, and where the car sits while the film is fitted. The tables below cover all three.

Figures come from each maker's own data sheet (SunTek CXP, 3M Ceramic IR, 3M Crystalline, Rev F) on 6 mm clear glass, so they compare across brands; the Crystalline row also gives 3M's figures on its Auto 75 glass (6 mm automotive green glass, 73% VLT), the other base on both 3M sheets. Why it matters here: a 2016 study of 29 cars at Los Angeles dealerships found the driver's side window blocked 71% of UVA on average, against 96% for the windshield (JAMA Ophthalmology). We don't install mirror, chrome or colored film.

The number on the box is a product name, not a reading on your car, so the installer meters your glass before choosing shades and again after. How each shade looks by day, how much it hides and how well you see out at night: 5, 20, 35 and 50% tint compared. The shades LA drivers search for most are 70, 20 and 35 (Google Keyword Planner, Los Angeles, September 2025 to August 2026).

Professional window tinting that passes California law

We fit any shade on the rear side windows and back glass, clear 88% film on the front pair with the installer's certificate, and a sun strip on the windshield; no full-windshield film and no dark front film on a medical letter. The rule behind each window: how to have tint legally in California.

  • A legal fit, checked: meter readings before and after, and the installer's certificate for the front side windows.
  • Named films: SunTek CXP carbon, 3M Ceramic IR and 3M Crystalline, with the maker's warranty registered to you by the installer.
  • A finish you can inspect: door panels and electronics protected, edges sealed, and a walk-round of every window at handover.
  • On your schedule: at home or at work, with the price confirmed in writing before we start.
  • One booking: add a full detail or ceramic coating to the same visit.
