Mobile car wash FAQ

How much is a mobile car wash in Los Angeles?

A mobile car wash and detail is $119 for a sedan, $149 for an SUV or crossover and $169 for a truck, van or 3-row SUV. That covers the hand wash, wheels, glass inside and out and an interior vacuum and wipe-down, with no travel fee. A membership books the same visit on a schedule.

What is the cheapest way to wash my car?

Doing it yourself with a bucket, or a self-serve bay, costs least; in the City of LA a hose needs a self-closing shut-off nozzle and no water may run into the street (LADWP). A hand wash where your car is parked is $119, and a membership books it on a schedule.

Can you wash my car at my apartment or condo building?

Yes, in your own spot in the building garage or lot, or on the street outside, with the building's OK for the garage. The crew washes on a water-capture mat with its own water, so nothing runs off to the street or the storm drain. Give us the gate code and spot number when you book; the same applies in Long Beach and the rest of our area.

Is there a car wash in a parking garage where I can leave my car while I work?

Yes: we wash it in your office garage while you work, with the building's OK. Leave the car in its spot and we text you when it's done, with photos. A whole fleet of company cars is a fleet washing program.

How much water does a mobile car wash use?

Most of our washes are rinseless, on a water-capture mat, with water the crew brings; the maker of a leading rinseless wash says a car can be done with less than 2 gallons. EPA's WaterSense guide puts a tunnel wash at about 66–85 gallons of fresh water a car without recycling, and 8–17 with it.

What is the best car wash to not scratch your car?

Every MNG wash is a hand wash: loose grit lifted first, then a pH-neutral shampoo, a clean microfiber mitt and hand-drying, in the shade, never brushes. How tunnel, touchless and hand washes compare: what is the safest car wash to not scratch your car?

Can you add wax to a mobile car wash?

Yes: Gtechniq C2 spray sealant at the same visit, $59. For a carnauba finish, book the mobile car wax service, Swissvax applied by hand.

What is the best app to wash my car?

Apps such as Washos and Washr send a detailer from their network; with MNG you book online, no app needed. Whichever you choose, check four things: a price by vehicle size, how they keep water out of the gutter, whether their insurance covers your car while it is in their care, and what happens if something goes wrong. Ours: published prices, the mat, insurance that covers your car in our care, and our 48-hour guarantee.

Eco-friendly car wash: waterless, low-water, nothing into the gutter

The three washing methods our crews use and when we use each
MethodWhen we use itWater
WaterlessLight dust on a car that is washed oftenA spray solution, no bucket
RinselessMost visitsA bucket or two; the maker of Optimum No Rinse says a car can be washed with "less than 2 gallons" (ONR)
Contained rinseMud, beach sand, wildfire ash, salt, wheel wellsA rinse on the water-capture mat, with the crew's own water, collected and taken away

Every visit starts with a water-capture mat under the car and the crew's own water, never your hose. Most visits need a bucket, not a hose; heavy dirt still gets rinsed, but the water is caught on the mat. How each method lifts dirt without scratching: how a waterless car wash works. Why it matters in LA:

  • The City of LA bans non-stormwater discharges to the storm drain; its car-washing exemption covers only "Non commercial car washing by residents or by non-profit organizations", and untreated wastewater from "mobile commercial or industrial operations" is barred (LAMC 64.70.02–64.70.03).
  • LADWP requires a self-closing shut-off nozzle on any hose used to wash a vehicle and bans runoff onto streets, driveways and gutters (LADWP).
  • For comparison, EPA's WaterSense guide puts a conveyor tunnel wash at 65.8–85.3 gallons of fresh water a car without water recycling, and 7.8–16.8 with it (EPA).

Where we wash: home, apartment, office or the street

  • Your driveway or home garage. The car sits on the water-capture mat, so nothing runs onto the street or the driveway, and there is nothing to hose off afterwards.
  • Apartment and condo garages. In your own spot, with the building's OK. The rinseless method needs no hose, so nothing runs across the garage floor; LADWP bans "watering of any hard surfaces such as … parking areas".
  • Office parking. In the building garage or lot while you work, with the building's OK. Company cars: fleet washing.
  • On the street. If the car is parked on the street, the crew washes it there, on the water-capture mat, with its own water, so nothing reaches the gutter or the storm drain.

Outside the City of LA, other cities have their own water rules; in Long Beach, for example, a hose needs a shut-off nozzle and water may not run off onto sidewalks, roadways or parking lots (Long Beach Utilities). We use the same method everywhere: the mat and our own water.

Washing for LA conditions

Los Angeles conditions and how the wash changes for each
LA conditionWhat it does to a clean carWhat we do
Hard water. LADWP's 2022 averages: 8.6, 9.8 and 16.3 grains per gallon; above 7 counts as hard (LADWP)Spots when it dries on paint and glass; LADWP notes softened water leaves fewer spots on "automobile finishes"Hand-dry every panel; spots that have etched in need water spot removal
Sprinklers. LADWP bans outdoor watering from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., so sprinklers run early or lateA car parked by a lawn gets sprayedPark away from the sprinkler zone the night after a wash
Wildfire ash. LA County Public Health: a gentle spray first, then mild detergent; "Avoid scrubbing dry ash, as it can scratch paint" (Public Health)Wiping dry ash drags grit across the paintA contained rinse first, never a dry wipe; the ash water is collected, not sent to the drain
Jacaranda season. The blossoms' stickiness is aphid honeydew, and they dirty windshields (LAPL)Sticky spots on glass and paintA pre-soak before the mitt touches it; we don't let it bake
Beach sand and salt in Santa Monica, the South Bay and Long BeachSand scratches when wipedA pre-soak or contained rinse; wheels and wheel wells
Sun and heatShampoo dries on hot panels and leaves spotsShade or a garage, and panels cooled first
