What changes the price:

  • vehicle size and how complex the panels are (vents, sensors, aero parts);
  • the film line and finish: satin, color and black cost more than clear gloss;
  • wrapped edges and part removal, against cut-in edges;
  • paint condition: chips are filled or the paint is corrected first, with paint correction.
California law

Windshield and headlight film: California rules

  • Windshield. Vehicle Code 26708 bars material on the windshield. The film exceptions are small stickers in the lower corners (a 7-inch square on the passenger side, a 5-inch square on the driver's side), a strip at the top whose bottom edge sits at least 29 inches above the driver's seat, and clear 88% film only with a dermatologist's certificate kept in the car. We don't install windshield protection film. A tinted top strip is on the window tint page.
  • Headlights and lamps. Vehicle Code 25950 fixes the colors lamps must show: white or yellow to the front, red to the rear. We fit clear film only (XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS), never smoked or tinted film. Yellowed lenses get headlight restoration before any film goes on.

How we install paint protection film, from quote to hand-over

  1. 01

    Quote

Book a quote with the vehicle, color, coverage and finish. The price comes back in writing.

  2. 02

    Paint check

Chips, swirls, dents and repainted panels are noted. Where needed, paint correction or paintless dent repair comes first, because film seals in whatever is under it.

  3. 03

    Wash, strip, decontaminate

In 3M's order: no coating left on the paint; wax, tar and sealant removed; clay; a final wipe-down and inspection.

  4. 04

    Patterns

Film cut to the car's panels, with badges, emblems or lights removed where the package says so.

  5. 05

    Fit in the bay

Film goes on wet in the installer's bay. 3M's guidelines call for 60–85°F; a Woodland Hills August averages 97.4°F (NOAA), which is why PPF is a bay job, not a driveway job. The slip solution uses distilled or filtered water, not LA tap water.

  6. 06

    Settle and inspect

The adhesive rests before the film is pressed home; every edge is then checked under light.

  7. 07

    Hand-over

A care card, the maker's warranty registered to your car, and the first-wash date.

Paint protection film FAQ

How much does PPF cost in Los Angeles?

Partial front from $1,699, full front from $2,299, and a full-body PPF wrap from $6,499 for a sedan. SUVs and trucks have their own columns in the price table, and satin or color film its own rows. Coverage, vehicle size, the film line, wrapped edges and paint prep move the price.

How much is full front PPF in Los Angeles, and what does it cover?

Full front is from $2,299 for a sedan, from $2,449 for an SUV and from $2,599 for a truck. It covers the bumper, full hood, full fenders, mirror caps and headlights. Partial front covers only the leading edge of the hood and fenders, so a film line shows on the hood; a track pack adds the pillars, roof edge and rockers.

Does PPF cost more for an SUV, a truck or a sports car?

It is priced by size, not by badge: film is cut to the model's own pattern and priced from the size columns. A Porsche 911 sits in the sedan / coupe column, a Lexus RX or Porsche Macan in the SUV column and a Toyota Sienna in the Truck / van / 3-row SUV column (which column your car is in). Full front is from $2,449 for an SUV and from $2,599 for a truck or large SUV, and lifted trucks often add the rocker panels. Model 3, Model Y, S, X and Cybertruck prices are on Tesla PPF. Motorcycle tanks and fairings are from $699.

Who is the best PPF installer in Los Angeles?

No neutral ranking exists, so check five things: the film brand and line in writing; the maker's warranty registered to your car (XPEL's covers professional installs only); a clean, climate-steady bay; wrapped edges or part removal; and a published price by coverage. We name XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS, STEALTH or COLOR PPF in every quote and price from one table.

Which PPF brand is the best?

No independent test ranks the brands, so compare published terms. We fit XPEL: ULTIMATE PLUS in clear gloss, STEALTH for satin and COLOR PPF for color, each under XPEL's own warranty, registered by the installer. How the brands' published terms compare: PPF brands.

Can a new car get PPF and a ceramic coating together, and which goes on first?

Yes: film takes the chips, and a coating adds gloss and easier washing. Film goes on first, then a coating the film maker accepts; why that order: ceramic coating vs PPF. Full front film with XPEL FUSION PLUS is from $3,199.

Can you remove old PPF, and what does removal cost?

Yes. Film comes off with heat: 3M calls for a steamer and a peel at 30–60 degrees from the paint (3M). XPEL says removal "will not harm your vehicle's paint when done correctly" (XPEL FAQ), and its ULTIMATE PLUS data sheet says the adhesive won't "leave behind residue". Repainted panels are noted in the paint check before film goes on. Removing front-end film is from $499 on a sedan; full-body removal is quoted. More in removing PPF.

What's the best way to protect car paint from the sun in Los Angeles?

Shade first: a garage or a cover. On the paint, PPF's top coat is built to stay clear: XPEL's data sheet reports a color change under ΔE 1.5 after a concentrated-sunlight test equal to 3.5 years outdoors, and its warranty covers yellowing. A ceramic coating adds a sacrificial layer over film or paint.

More about Paint Protection Film (PPF)

What's included in PPF for your car

Every package is XPEL film, a paint check before any film is cut, prep in the order the film maker sets, edges finished by hand, and a care card at handover. Car protection film is only as good as the paint under it and the edges around it, so that is where the time goes. What the film is, and how it differs from a vinyl wrap or a ceramic coating: PPF and car wraps explained.

Partial front, full front, track pack or full-body PPF wrap

Full front PPF covers the bumper, the full hood, the full fenders, the mirror caps and the headlights. Just the bumper or the hood? Partial front, from $1,699 on a sedan, is the smallest package on the table. The other packages trade coverage against cost:

PPF packages, what each covers and where the film edge shows
PackageWhat it coversWhere the film edge shows
Partial frontBumper, the leading edge of the hood and fenders, mirror capsAcross the hood and fenders
Full frontBumper, full hood, full fenders, mirror caps, headlightsNo edge on the hood
Track packFull front plus A-pillars, roof leading edge, rocker panelsNo edge on the hood; pillars and rockers covered
Full-body PPF wrapEvery painted panelEdges wrapped where panels allow

Which coverage fits a lease, a freeway commute or canyon roads: how much of the car to cover. "Clear bra" is the older name for the same film. The smallest add-on is door cups and door edges. Wrapped edges, and removing badges or lights where the package calls for it, hide the film line; cut-in edges leave a thin visible one. Tesla owners: patterns for every model are on Tesla PPF.

PPF film types and finishes: clear, matte, satin and color

Matte or satin ("stealth")Turns gloss paint satin; keeps matte paint matteMatte factory paint, a stealth lookXPEL STEALTH
Colored or black PPFChanges the color and keeps the chip protection of PPFA color change on a car you want protectedXPEL COLOR PPF

What the film is. XPEL's data sheet describes ULTIMATE PLUS as a "clear-coated polyurethane film": 7.6 mil without its liner, a 0.5 mil self-healing top coat over 6.0 mil of polyurethane and 1.1 mil of adhesive. A clear wrap worth paying for is polyurethane PPF, not vinyl; want the color without the protection? That is a car wrap. How clear, hydrophobic, stealth and color films differ: PPF types.

Why XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS. On the same sheet it passes the ASTM D3170 / SAE J400 gravel test with no detrimental effect and holds its color after a concentrated-sunlight test equal to 3.5 years outdoors. XPEL's 10-year warranty covers yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating, is registered by the installer, and transfers with proof of the install date (COLOR PPF's does not transfer).

What the film is rated for, and what the warranty excludes

Rated for (XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS data sheet and care page):

  • Stone chips: "no detrimental effect" in the gravel test (SAE J400), run at 70 psi and −29°C (XPEL data sheet).
  • Light scratches and swirls: they self-heal in 20–30 minutes at room temperature, faster with warm water (XPEL).
  • Fuel and fluid stains: no detrimental effect after 30 minutes' immersion in gasoline, diesel or motor oil.
  • Sun: a color change under ΔE 1.5 with 90% gloss retained after a concentrated-sunlight test equal to 3.5 years' exposure.

Not covered, or not fixed by film:

  • Every impact. XPEL's warranty excludes "the physical impact of rocks or road debris", so a hit that damages the film is not a warranty claim.
  • Deep scratches. XPEL says deeper scratches "may not fully heal".
  • Damage already there. Film seals in what is under it, so chips and swirls are dealt with first.
  • Gloss and easy washing. That is a coating's job; see below.

PPF is a film, not a coating. On factory paint it comes off with steam at a shallow angle, and XPEL says its adhesive "will not damage paint or leave behind residue if removed".

PPF and ceramic coating together

Film goes on first, then the coating, over the film and the panels without film; why in that order is in ceramic coating vs PPF. The coating on the film has to be one the film maker accepts: XPEL's warranty excludes other brands' coatings, and XPEL states its own FUSION PLUS "will not void" the PPF warranty. Ours is XPEL FUSION PLUS, from $3,199 with full front film. More on ceramic coating.

After the install: the care that keeps the film's warranty

  • First wash: wait 48 hours for XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS and STEALTH, 72 hours for XPEL COLOR PPF.
  • Hand wash or touchless only. XPEL's warranty excludes damage from automatic car washes, and COLOR PPF must never go through a tunnel wash.
  • Pressure washer: a wide nozzle, well back from the paint and square to the film, never aimed at an edge.
  • Products: pH-neutral soap; no strong alkaline, acid or solvent cleaners, no dyed wax, no abrasive polish. For stubborn stains on STEALTH, XPEL allows 99% isopropyl alcohol.
  • Dry it. LA water is hard (LADWP's 2022 zone averages run 8.6, 9.8 and 16.3 grains per gallon), and XPEL's warranty doesn't cover water spots.
  • After ash fall, rinse before any wipe: LA County Public Health warns that scrubbing dry ash can scratch paint.
  • Our mobile car wash follows these rules wherever the car is parked, the street included, on a water-capture mat with our own water. A mobile car wash subscription books it on a fixed schedule.
