- What changes the price: the model and year (Model X doors, the 2025 Model Y front end); coverage and finish (satin and color cost more than clear); wrapped edges and removed parts versus cut-to-edge; and paint prep, since chips are touched up and swirls corrected before film (paint correction).

How a Tesla PPF install works
- 01
Quote
Get a Tesla PPF quote with the model, year and coverage, and photos of any existing chips: the pattern depends on the year.
- 02
To the installer's bay
Film is not fitted in a driveway; why the bay matters is on paint protection film. Your quote says where the bay is and how long the car stays.
- 03
Inspection and paint gauge
Chips are touched up first: film seals a chip in, it doesn't hide it.
- 04
Wash, decontamination and a light polish only where needed
Tesla's manual rules out harsh abrasives; heavy swirls go to paint correction first.
- 05
A pattern cut for the model year
Relieved around the cameras, and around the sensors on older cars; edges wrapped where the panel allows.
- 06
Install and cure
Small moisture pockets usually clear within a few days to a few weeks as the adhesive cures (XPEL FAQ).
- 07
Inspection, registration and return
XPEL's warranty registered in your name by the installer, and a care sheet.

Tesla PPF FAQ
How much does PPF cost for a Tesla Model Y in Los Angeles?
On a Model Y, full front is from $2,449, the track pack from $3,699 and full body in clear from $6,999; satin is from $7,999 and color from $8,499. A 2025 or later Model Y needs a year-specific pattern cut around the bumper and fender cameras. Every model is in the table above.
How much is paint protection film for a Tesla Model 3, Model S or Model X?
Model 3: full front from $2,299, full body from $6,499. Model S: full front from $2,449, full body from $6,999. Model X: full front from $2,599, full body from $7,499. The Model X's falcon-wing doors add edges and time.
How much does PPF cost on a Cybertruck, and what does the film protect?
Full front is from $2,799, full body in clear from $7,999 and in satin from $8,999. Tesla says the Cybertruck has no paint or clear coat, so a scratch is in the stainless steel itself; the film takes the chips and scratches instead of the steel.
How long does Tesla PPF take, and when can I wash the car?
Your quote gives the time in the installer's bay for your package. The first wash waits 48 hours for clear and satin film and 72 hours for color film (XPEL), and small moisture pockets clear within days to weeks as the adhesive cures. The best time to book is before delivery or the first freeway chips.
How much is full front PPF plus a ceramic coating on a Tesla?
The full front PPF plus ceramic coating package is from $3,199 on a Model 3, from $3,399 on a Model Y, from $3,399 on a Model S and from $3,599 on a Model X. Film takes the chips on the front; the coating adds gloss and easier washing on the film, the rest of the paint and the side and rear glass, never the windshield. Film goes on first: see paint protection film.
Will PPF affect my Tesla's cameras, sensors or Autopilot?
Film never covers a lens. Teslas carry a camera in each front fender, and a 2025 or later Model Y adds a front bumper camera with a washer nozzle; film is cut around each. Model 3 and Model Y built from October 2022 have no ultrasonic sensors; on older cars, film is relieved around each sensor. The forward cameras sit behind the windshield, which body film never touches.
Can I put PPF on a leased Tesla, and does it void Tesla's warranty?
Yes on a lease: Tesla's shop allows film, but damaged film may have to be removed or replaced before return, and correct removal doesn't harm the paint (XPEL). Under federal warranty law, a warrantor generally can't make coverage depend on its own parts or service (FTC), but Tesla still excludes damage caused by an accessory or an inappropriate installation. Removal is from $549 on a Model Y. Not legal advice.
Can I start with less film and still protect my Tesla properly?
Yes: film only the panels that take the chips. Partial front (from $1,799 on a Model Y) or full front instead of full body; clear instead of satin or color; door cups only if you need them. Book at delivery, before chips need touching up. The film, pattern and edge work are the same at every level, and the film always carries a maker's warranty in your name.
More about Tesla PPF
What's different about paint protection film on a Tesla
Tesla's warranty doesn't cover stone chips
Tesla's New Vehicle Limited Warranty lists "paint and glass stone chips" as normal wear and excludes damage from "road debris (including stone chips)" (Tesla NVLW), so every chip from the 405 or the 10 is the owner's bill, on the hood's leading edge, the bumper, the mirrors and the A-pillars first. Tesla's manual rules out harsh-abrasive polishes and sends owners to a touch-up pen for minor chips (Model Y manual), so film, not polishing, is the plan, and the installer gauges every Tesla before it goes on. Whether film pays off for your car, and for how long you keep it, is covered in our PPF and car wraps guide.
Model-by-model notes
| Model | What changes the film job | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X | A side camera in each front fender: fender film is relieved around it, never laid over the lens | Model Y manual, "Cameras" |
| Model Y (2025 and later) | A front bumper camera with its own washer nozzle: bumper film is cut around the lens and the nozzle. It is a new front end, so the pattern must match the model year | Model Y manual, "Cameras" |
| Model 3 and Model Y built from October 2022 | No ultrasonic parking sensors (Tesla Vision), so no sensor holes in the bumper film; earlier cars have sensors, and the film is relieved around each one | Tesla Vision update |
| Model S and Model X | Larger panels; ultrasonic sensors dropped from 2023. Model X falcon-wing doors add edges and hours | Tesla Vision update |
| Every model | A pattern made for the model year, including the refreshed Model 3 front end | XPEL's pattern library |
| Cybertruck | No paint and no clear coat: a scratch is in the stainless steel itself, so film takes the chips and scratches instead. Orange spots on bare steel are surface contamination; Tesla says the truck "is not rusting" | Tesla, "Exterior Cleaning" |
Cameras, sensors and lease returns
- Cameras. Film never covers a lens: the fender cameras on every model are cut around, and so are the bumper camera and its washer nozzle on a 2025 and later Model Y.
- Sensors. On Model 3 and Y built before October 2022 and Model S and X before 2023, film is relieved around each parking sensor; the manual also warns against aiming a water jet at them.
- Windshield. The Model Y manual keeps hydrophobic coatings off the front windshield because they "may affect the visibility" of the cameras. We don't install full-windshield film.
- Leases. Tesla's shop says film can go on a leased car, but damaged film may have to be removed or replaced before return (Tesla shop).
- Warranty. Film on its own is no reason to lose Tesla's warranty; the questions below say what Tesla does exclude.
Tesla PPF and ceramic coating options
Clear, satin or color film
| Finish | Looks like | Film numbers | Maker's warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear gloss · XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS | Invisible; keeps the factory gloss | Gloss above 90 GU; passes the gravel test at 70 PSI and −29°C with "no detrimental effect"; after desert-sun ageing equal to 3.5 years, a color change under ΔE 1.5 and 90% of its gloss kept | 10 years against yellowing, blistering, cracking and delamination; transferable with proof of the install date |
| Satin · XPEL STEALTH | Turns any paint color satin | Gloss 23 GU; a hydrophilic top coat that reduces water spotting; passes the gravel test | 10 years against yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating; transferable with proof of the install date |
| Color · XPEL COLOR PPF | A color change that also stops chips | Colored polyurethane film on XPEL's own data sheet | 10 years, not transferable (XPEL). For reference, Tesla's own color film carries 5 years and its clear film 10 (Tesla parts warranty, US only) |
How long film lasts in LA sun: the maker's warranty is the honest number, and our PPF and car wraps guide covers the rest. A vinyl color change doesn't stop chips the way film does: see car wrap.
Film, coating or both
| You want… | Coverage |
|---|---|
| To stop chips on the hood and bumper | Full front or track pack film |
| Every panel protected: a long keep, a lease, a satin look | Full-body clear or satin film |
| Easier washing and gloss on the unfilmed panels and the side and rear glass | Film first, with a ceramic coating on top (the full front plus coating row). Glass coating goes on the side and rear windows only, never the windshield: Tesla says it "may affect the visibility" of the cameras. XPEL says its own FUSION PLUS coating does not void its film warranty |
| A cooler cabin under the glass roof | Ceramic window tint |
Film where chips happen, coating on top and on the rest. Why the film goes on first is answered on paint protection film; which to choose is covered in our PPF and car wraps guide.
Caring for a filmed Tesla in LA
- First wash: 48 hours for clear and satin film, 72 hours for color film (XPEL care).
- Automatic washes: hand wash or touchless only; Tesla's manual allows touchless automatic washes only, and Tesla doesn't recommend automatic washes for Cybertruck at all. XPEL rules out automatic tunnel washes for COLOR PPF. Use Car Wash Mode.
- Shade: Tesla's manual says "Do not wash in direct sunlight": in LA, early, late or under cover.
- Pressure washer: at least 12 inches (30 cm) from the car (Tesla) and never at film edges (XPEL); 3 feet for color film (XPEL).
- Products: nothing above pH 13, no highly alkaline or caustic cleaners, no hot water (Tesla). No unapproved solvents or abrasives on color film; 99% isopropyl alcohol is XPEL's answer for stubborn stains on clear and satin film. XPEL asks for Ceramic Boost at least every 6 months on STEALTH.
- Spills: bird droppings, sap and bugs off as soon as possible (XPEL).
- Drying: every time. LADWP's 2022 figures put City of LA water at 8.6 to 16.3 grains per gallon, and LADWP calls anything over 7 hard (LADWP).
- Our wash: our mobile car wash does film-safe hand washes wherever the car is parked, the street included, on a water-capture mat with our own water.

- Are edges wrapped, and is any blade used on the paint?
- How do you handle the bumper and fender cameras, and the sensors on older cars?
- Where is the car fitted, and how long does it stay?
- What is your workmanship warranty, apart from the film maker's? (Tesla's own film installs carry 12 months or 12,500 miles.)
