Paint Correction in Los Angeles: Swirl, Scratch and Water Spot Removal
Paint correction is machine polishing that levels the clear coat so swirls, light scratches and water spots are removed, not filled. MNG crews do it wherever your car is parked, in a shaded spot, across LA County outside the Antelope Valley, plus Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley. One-step polish from $549; two-step from $1,249.
- We measure your paint before we polish
- RUPES polishers, Koch-Chemie compounds
- Not right? Tell us within 48 hours and we come back and fix it at no charge.

What the price buys: your paint measured, a test section agreed with you, hours of panel-by-panel machine work in shade at your address, and protection afterwards. The entry package is the one-step polish, which is what most people mean by car buffing.

One-step polish plus coating is our ceramic coating package, $999 for a sedan. Every correction package starts with the wash and decontamination.
What changes the price:
- Size: vehicle size and panel count; a crew-cab truck has far more painted surface than a coupe.
- Level: what the paint needs, decided on a test section, not guessed from a photo.
- Paint: black and dark paints show every mark, and some paints are harder to cut.
- Extras: glass, trim and headlight restoration.
All our prices: car detailing prices in Los Angeles.
Paint decontamination: clay bar, iron and tar removal
Paint decontamination removes what a wash leaves bonded to the paint: iron fallout from brake dust, road and beach tar, tree sap, overspray and ash residue. We use an iron remover, a tar remover and a clay bar, in that order, before any polishing. It is part of every paint correction package and can be booked on its own.
Paint decontamination from $169 (sedan), from $199 (SUV), from $219 (truck, van, 3-row SUV); included in every correction package.

| Contaminant | Where it comes from in LA | How we remove it |
|---|---|---|
| Iron fallout (orange specks, rough paint) | Brake dust and freeway driving | An iron remover, which turns purple or red as it works and is never left to dry on paint in direct sun (CarPro IronX) |
| Tar | Fresh asphalt and beach parking; USGS reports that natural seeps account for most tarball accumulation on California beaches (USGS) | A tar remover, then a wash |
| Tree sap and honeydew | Street trees: UC ANR describes "cars, sidewalks, driveways … covered in sticky stuff, especially those under trees" (UC ANR) | Softened and lifted, then clay |
| Ash | Fire season | Rinsed and lifted with plenty of lubricant, never dry-wiped. OEHHA warns that ash from burned homes and buildings can hold caustic materials, that wet ash can burn skin, and not to wash ash into storm drains (OEHHA), so we work on a water-capture mat |
Clay lifts light paint overspray; heavy overspray needs polishing and is quoted.
The bag test. Put a thin plastic bag over your fingertips and run them over clean paint. If it still feels gritty, it needs clay. What a clay bar is and when it is worth it: what is a clay bar treatment.
Clay can leave light marring, which is why it comes before the polish in a correction. Booked on its own, decontamination ends with a Gtechniq C2 spray sealant.
Car scratch removal: the fix and the cost by scratch depth
Scratch removal is from $199 per panel. A scratch that sits in the clear coat, a layer only about 35–50 microns thick, can usually be polished out or made far less visible. If your fingernail catches in it, it has probably gone through the clear coat: polishing only softens it, and touch-up paint or a body shop is the fix.
Scratch removal from $199 per panel; whole-car swirls and scratches are the one- or two-step correction above.

| What you see | Likely depth | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fine circles or a spider web in the sun (swirls) | The top of the clear coat | The one-step polish |
| A light line your fingernail glides over | In the clear coat | A two-step on the panel: scratch removal per panel |
| Your fingernail catches; a white or grey line | Through the clear coat into the color | Polishing softens it; touch-up paint or a body shop fixes it |
| A key scratch showing primer or metal | To primer or metal | A body shop repaint; we don't repaint |
| A scratch on a dent or crease | The panel is bent | Paintless dent repair first, then polish |
| Rock chips | Small craters in the paint | Touch-up; paint protection film stops the next ones |
The fingernail test is a rule of thumb: the gauge reading and a test pass decide, and we tell you before we start. Most key scratches go through the clear coat, and we say so on the photo quote rather than after the polish. Which layer each kind of scratch reaches: car scratch types.
Water spot removal: LA's hard water
Water spots are the minerals left when hard water dries on paint. LA tap water is hard: LADWP averages run from 147 to 279 mg/L across the city, and the USGS calls anything over 180 "very hard". Fresh spots wipe off with a mineral remover. Spots that have etched into the clear coat need machine polishing.
Water spot removal from $169 (sedan); etched spots across the whole car are priced as a one- or two-step correction.

| Area | Average hardness (mg/L as CaCO3) | Range | USGS class | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Fernando Valley and Western LA (LADWP) | 147 (8.6 gpg) | 93–275 | Hard | LADWP, 2022 figures |
| Silver Lake, Downtown and South LA (LADWP) | 168 (9.8 gpg) | 93–291 | Hard | LADWP |
| Eastern LA and the Harbor (LADWP) | 279 (16.3 gpg) | 275–281 | Very hard | LADWP |
| Santa Clarita: SCV Water groundwater | 334 | 300–377 | Very hard | SCV Water 2025 report, 2024 data |
| Santa Clarita: SCV Water treated imported water | 160 | 150–170 | Hard | SCV Water 2025 report |
| Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley: Calleguas wholesale water | 140 | 137–142 | Hard | Calleguas 2025 report, 2025 data |
| Simi Valley: Golden State Water's Simi Valley system | 210 | 137–330 | Very hard | Golden State Water, 2025 data |
USGS classes: 121–180 mg/L is hard, over 180 very hard (USGS). Calleguas sells wholesale water that local utilities may blend or treat further, so a Thousand Oaks tap can differ.
Where LA spots come from: sprinklers hitting parked cars, rinsing and air-drying in the sun, and home washing with hard water. LADWP lists fewer water spots on automobile finishes as a benefit of softened water.
How we remove them, by stage:
- Mineral deposits sitting on top: a water-spot remover.
- Rings etched into the clear coat: a polish.
- Deep etching: a compound, quoted after a test section.
A coating or sealant makes spots easier to wipe off but doesn't make paint spot-proof: see ceramic coating. Doing it yourself, and keeping spots from coming back: how to remove water spots from car paint.
What's included in paint correction
- 01
Quote from photos
Get a paint correction quote with a sun-lit photo of the worst panel.
- 02
Inspect and measure
Every panel goes under swirl-finder lights and a paint thickness gauge. Factory clear coat is only 1.5–2.0 mils (35–50 microns) thick (DeFelsko); a thick reading usually means a repainted panel, a thin one that little clear coat is left.
- 03
Wash with the runoff captured
The City of Los Angeles bars untreated wastewater from "mobile commercial or industrial operations" from the storm drain system (LAMC 64.70.02 B.1). We wash on a water-capture mat with our own water, never your hose, so nothing reaches the gutter; the method is the same in every city we serve.
- 04
Decontaminate
Iron remover, tar remover, then clay (see paint decontamination).
- 05
Tape and test
Trim, rubber and badges taped; a test section polished and shown to you.
- 06
Compound and polish, panel by panel
In shade, with a RUPES dual-action polisher and Koch-Chemie compounds and polishes, re-measuring thin spots and taking the least clear coat that fixes the defect.
- 07
Panel wipe and inspection
Polishing oils stripped so you see the true finish, then a final check under lights.
- 08
Protect
A Gtechniq C2 spray sealant, or book the coating: the two-step correction + ceramic coating bundle is in the price table.
- 09
Hand-over and aftercare
Swirls come back from tunnel-wash brushes, a gritty mitt and a dry towel. Keep the finish with a maintenance wash plan: mobile car wash subscription.

Paint correction services here are measured work: the least clear coat that fixes the defect, taken off panel by panel with RUPES dual-action polishers and Koch-Chemie compounds and polishes. What paint correction is, and why it removes defects rather than filling them: the paint correction process.
One-step, two-step or multi-step: which level your paint needs
| Level | What it removes | Typical car |
|---|---|---|
| One-step polish | Light swirls, haze and wash marring; restores gloss | Newer or garaged cars; prep before a ceramic coating or PPF; lease returns |
| Two-step correction | Most swirls and light scratches, etched water spots, dullness | Daily drivers washed in tunnel washes; black and dark paint |
| Multi-step correction | Deeper scratches, sanding marks, heavy etching | Show cars and poor repaint finishes, by quote |
We polish a test section first and show you the result before doing the whole car. Your quote gives the time on site for your level and size.
How we correct paint at your home, step by step
What each stage of a correction does, and why, is in the paint correction process. This is how the visit runs:
What our crew needs at your address
- Shade, wherever the car is parked: a garage, carport, covered parking or a shaded curb, with room to walk around the car. Meguiar's says that, for best results, its compound goes on "in shade to a cool, clean surface" (Meguiar's); a sunny Valley driveway in August is not that, so we set up in shade or move the date. A building's parking garage is shaded all day, which suits correction.
- Water and power: we bring our own, never your hose, and the wash runs on a water-capture mat.
- Time: the car stays put for the hours on your quote; it can be at work while you are.
- Access: the building's OK for a building garage. HOA rules are yours to check.
Car buffing and car polishing: what you are booking
Buffing is the everyday word for machine polishing, sometimes called color correction. Ask for car buffing or car polishing and you are booking the one-step polish in the price table; the two-step is for heavier swirls. Either way you get leveled clear coat, not a cover-up: a glaze enhances the look "by filling in minor scratches", while polish "removes scratches and swirls" (Chemical Guys). A ceramic coating doesn't hide them either: Ceramic Pro says swirl marks "will stand out – not be covered up" (Ceramic Pro).

Paint correction FAQ
How much does paint correction cost in Los Angeles, and what's a fair price?
A one-step polish is from $549 and a two-step correction from $1,249 for a sedan; SUVs and trucks are in the table. A fair quote names the level, the vehicle size, the hours on site and the protection afterwards, and follows a test section rather than a guess from a photo. It costs what it does because it is hours of machine work on a clear coat only about 35–50 microns thick.
How much does it cost to buff out a scratch on a car?
Scratch removal is from $199 per panel. It depends on depth: if your fingernail glides over the scratch, it usually polishes out; if it catches, polishing only softens it, and touch-up paint or a body shop is the fix. Send a sun-lit photo for a quote: we measure the paint before we promise anything. More in car scratch removal.
How much does it cost to buff or polish a car and remove swirl marks?
Swirl removal is the one-step polish, from $549 for a sedan; heavy swirls on dark paint need the two-step, from $1,249. Buffing and polishing are the same machine work. A glaze only fills minor scratches for looks, while polish removes them (Chemical Guys), so what you pay for is swirls taken out of the clear coat, not hidden.
How much does a two-step paint correction cost, and when is it needed?
It is from $1,249 for a sedan, from $1,349 for an SUV and from $1,449 for a truck or 3-row SUV. A compound pass cuts the defects, then a polish pass refines the finish. It is the level for swirls and light scratches you can see in sun from a few feet away, typical on dark cars washed in tunnel washes. A test section decides, not a photo.
Should I get paint correction before a ceramic coating?
Yes: a coating is clear and seals in what is under it. Our ceramic coating package, XPEL FUSION PLUS CLASSIC, already includes a one-step polish; heavier swirls take the two-step correction + coating bundle, from $1,899 for a sedan. How much correction a coating needs: do I need paint correction before ceramic coating.
Do you do paint correction at my home or office?
Yes. Crews come wherever the car is parked, whether a home, an office, a garage or a shaded curb, across LA County outside the Antelope Valley, plus Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley, and bring their own water and power; the wash runs on a water-capture mat, with no travel fee. We need shade and room around the car, because compound works best on a cool panel in shade (Meguiar's). A parking garage is ideal.
How much does a clay bar treatment cost, and is it included in paint correction?
Decontamination with an iron remover, a tar remover and clay is from $169 for a sedan and from $219 for a truck, and it is included in every correction package. Booked on its own, it ends with a Gtechniq C2 spray sealant. The quick check: put a thin plastic bag over your fingertips; if clean paint still feels gritty, it needs clay.
How much does water spot removal cost, and can it be done in direct sun?
Water spot removal is from $169 for a sedan; etched spots across the car are a one- or two-step correction. Not in direct sun: Meguiar's says its compound works best "in shade to a cool, clean surface", and CarPro warns not to let its iron remover dry on the surface in direct sun. We work in a garage or shade.
