Exotics and supercars: a full color change is from $5,999, quoted from photos.

What changes the price:

  • Size and shape: vents, spoilers and deep bumpers take more film and more time.
  • Film and finish: metallic, color-flip and chrome films cost more (see the questions below).
  • Coverage: door jambs, and whether handles and lights come off or edges are cut around them.
  • Paint condition: chips and failing clear coat are fixed first, and Avery lists repainted (non-OEM) panels as unsuitable for its film.

Compared with a respray, this table is the wrap side of the cost: a wrap covers the factory paint and can come off later. All our prices: car detailing prices in Los Angeles.

California law

What we don't wrap: California rules

  • License plates. We never wrap, cover or tint a plate. Vehicle Code 5201 requires plates to be "clearly visible" and "clearly legible", bars coverings on them, and bars any "shade, tint, product, or other device" that stops toll, enforcement or emission cameras reading them.
  • Lights. Vehicle Code 25950 sets the colors lamps may show: white or yellow to the front, red to the rear, with listed exceptions such as turn signals and white backup lamps. We never change the color a lamp gives off: no lamp tint and no smoke film.
  • Windows. Vehicle Code 26708 bars material on the windshield and side or rear windows except where the section allows it: side windows behind the driver, and the rear window when the car has outside mirrors on both sides. So no wrap or perforated film on the windshield or front side windows. Window film is its own service: window tint.
  • Chrome. We found no California statute aimed at mirror-finish body wraps; 3M's own chrome bulletin notes that "restrictions on chrome wraps may vary by jurisdiction".

How a car wrap is installed

  1. 01

    Quote from photos

Get a car wrap quote with photos of the car, the color you want and the coverage: full, partial, jambs or chrome delete.

  2. 02

    Paint check

Chips, peeling clear coat and repainted panels come first. Avery lists "non-OEM painted vehicles" and paint that is not thoroughly cured as unsuitable for SW900, and does not warrant removal from improperly cured paint or paint older than 5 years. Where the paint needs it, paint correction comes before the film.

  3. 03

    Wash, clay and alcohol wipe

Every panel is stripped of dirt, wax and oils so the adhesive grips the paint, not the grime.

  4. 04

Parts off or edges cut in

Handles, badges, lights and mirror caps come off where the car allows, so the film wraps behind them; your quote lists which. Door jambs are optional.

  5. 05

    Fit in the bay

3M gives an application range of 60–90°F for Series 2080 (bulletin); NOAA's normal August high at Woodland Hills is 97.4°F, which is why full wraps go on in the installer's bay, not in a driveway. Chrome follows stricter rules: 3M's chrome bulletin calls for dry application, primer on stretched edges and knifeless tape for finishing cuts, so no blade touches the paint.

  6. 06

    Post-heat and inspect

Edges and stretched areas are post-heated to the maker's temperature (200–225°F for chrome, checked with an infrared thermometer), parts go back on, and the car is inspected under lights.

  7. 07

    Hand-over

With a care sheet, the film codes and the warranty paperwork. Time in the bay is on your quote.

Car wrap FAQ

How much does a full car wrap cost in Los Angeles?

A full color change in 3M 2080 gloss, satin or matte is from $3,499 for a sedan, from $4,299 for an SUV and from $4,799 for a truck, van or 3-row SUV. Metallic, color-flip and chrome films cost more, and a roof or hood alone is from $699. Size, film, door jambs and paint condition move the price. Against a respray: we quote the wrap, a body shop quotes the paint, and the wrap leaves the factory paint underneath.

How much does a full chrome wrap cost, and why does chrome cost more to install?

A full chrome wrap in Avery Dennison Conform Chrome is from $5,999 for a sedan. Chrome is slower to fit: the face film is thicker than standard wrap, and by 3M's own chrome bulletin, overheating it clouds the mirror for good, and it goes on dry, with primer on stretched edges and knifeless tape for the cuts. The mirror shows every speck, so prep takes longer. It is a show finish: Avery rates it at 2–3 years in European sun, so we print no warranty years.

Can I change my car's look without a full wrap?

Yes, in order of scope: a window-trim chrome delete, $549 for a sedan; a roof or hood in 3M 2080, from $699; then a full color change, from $3,499. Whatever the size of the job, ask for the film brand and line on the invoice: a named film comes with a published warranty, and an unnamed one has none to check.

How much is a chrome delete?

Window trim only is $549 for a sedan; a full chrome delete (window trim, grille, badges, handles and bumper trim) is from $1,199. The film is Avery Dennison SW900 black in gloss, satin or matte, rated by Avery for up to 9.6 years on vertical trim in LA County and 6 months on horizontal pieces. Film only: the factory chrome stays untouched underneath and comes back when the film comes off. Plates and lamps are never covered.

Who does car wraps in Los Angeles, and do you come to me?

MNG quotes, books and manages the job. The film goes on in the installer's bay, because 3M specifies 60–90°F for application, and your quote says where and for how long; the washes before and after come to you. Whoever you choose, ask four things: which film brand and line, whether door jambs are included, whether parts come off or edges are cut in, and whether the warranty is in writing.

How does the cost of a vinyl wrap compare with colored PPF?

A full vinyl color change is from $3,499 for a sedan; full-body colored PPF is from $7,999, so vinyl costs less at every size. The difference buys a different job: colored paint protection film is a thicker, self-healing polyurethane film sold for chip protection, while cast vinyl such as 3M 2080 is 3.5 mil without adhesive and is sold for color.

Do I have to tell the DMV if I wrap my car in California?

We found no Vehicle Code section or DMV page that requires reporting a color-change wrap. The application for registration asks for make, model, body type and VIN, not color (Vehicle Code 4150), and the DMV's application form (REG 343) has no color field. The same section lets the DMV ask for more, so call the DMV if you want certainty, and tell your insurer about the new color.

Can you remove an old wrap, and what does removal cost?

Yes: removal is from $899 for a sedan, from $1,099 for an SUV and from $1,199 for a truck or van. On cured factory paint, the makers rate their films removable within the rated period, with heat and a remover. The risks are repainted or failing clear coat, film left on past its rating (Avery does not warrant removal from paint older than 5 years), and chrome, which 3M says may not come off like other films.

More about Vinyl Wraps & Chrome Delete

What's included in a vinyl wrap

Every car wrap we book is a named cast film, fitted by the installer to the film maker's rules, with the maker's warranty terms written down before the job starts.

Full wrap, partial wrap or chrome delete

  • Full color change. Every painted panel in one film and one color, with door jambs as an option. A vinyl paint wrap changes the color without touching the paint: the factory finish stays underneath.
  • Partial wrap. A roof, a hood, mirror caps or a two-tone.
  • Chrome delete. Window trim, grille, badges, handles and bumper trim in gloss, satin or matte black. Any car with bright window trim suits it.

Clear or "stealth" film is a different product: paint protection film, sold for chip protection.

The films we fit

Color change in 3M Wrap Film Series 2080: gloss, high gloss, satin, matte or color flip. Cast film, never calendered: 3.5 mil without adhesive, with a clear protective layer on gloss colors, on 60-inch rolls, so almost any panel goes on in one piece, with no seams. Carbon fiber and other textures come from the same series, for example 2080-CFS12 Carbon Fiber Black.

Chrome in Avery Dennison Conform Chrome, made for high-end chrome accents: a 142-micron mirror face film. Chrome delete in Avery Dennison SW900 black, the longest published LA rating for black film; SW900 solid colors cover shades outside the 3M palette.

Colors LA drivers ask for most: matte black, gloss black, grey, white, red, purple and yellow, plus the color-flip films that change with the angle. You choose from the makers' palettes, and your quote carries the exact film code.

Vinyl wrap finishes and the makers' warranties in LA

Warranty terms and ratings the film makers publish for the films we fit: 3M for Series 2080 in its Zone 2, which covers the United States; Avery Dennison for SW900 in its Zone 2, which includes Los Angeles and Ventura counties; Avery's durability rating for Conform Chrome, which is not a warranty.

The hood and roof take the sun, so their terms are the short ones: covered or garage parking is the single biggest help.

What the warranties cover, in the makers' words. 3M warrants that applied Series 2080 film "will be free of defects in materials and manufacture – including yellowing, bubbling or cracking". The installer fills in 3M's warranty card with the dealer's name and ID, your VIN and the film lot; it covers the original purchaser only, is not transferable, and excludes misuse, accidents, misapplication, ordinary wear, dents from rocks or road debris, and paint pull during removal. Avery Dennison: "The term of Avery Dennison's warranty is equal to the product's durability", and "Abrasion and Loss of Gloss are not covered" (SW900 data sheet). Our own promise sits on top: not right? Tell us within 48 hours and we come back and fix it at no charge.

Caring for a wrapped car in LA

  • Hand wash only, with a wet, non-abrasive, solvent-free cleaner between pH 5 and 9 (Avery's range, stricter than 3M's 3 to 11); no brush tunnels.
  • No solvents: Avery's SW900 data sheet says soaps, waxes or coatings containing petroleum distillates or solvents void the warranty, and its cleaning bulletin asks for Avery's own wrap sealant. No wax or polish on matte or satin; chrome gets microfiber only, never a scrub.
  • Our mobile car wash hand-washes wrapped cars wherever they are parked, street included, with our own water on a water-capture mat.
  • The full routine, from parking to sap and washing: car wrap care and aftercare.
