1. Building garage or driveway. City-wide, 58.8% of Long Beach households rent and 40.5% of homes are detached houses; in 90802, Downtown, 79.0% rent and 81.2% of homes are in buildings of five or more units, while in 90808, on the east side, 90.0% of homes are detached (ACS 2020–2024, tenure; units in structure). So Downtown and along the shore, a detail usually happens on your building's parking level: clear it with the manager or HOA, tell us how we get in (a gate code, a fob or a meet at the ramp), and give us a bay with space to open every door. On the east side, where nine in ten homes in 90808 are detached houses, it is usually your driveway.

2. Street parking and sweeping. Street sweeping is enforced Monday to Friday, with posted windows between 5 a.m. and 4 p.m., and the City sweeps the two sides of a street on different days; no stopping or parking on any part of a sidewalk or parkway (parking FAQ). So we check the sweeping signs on your side of the block before we book, and our van parks at the curb, never on the sidewalk or parkway. 3. Where the wash water goes. Long Beach bars any illicit discharge to the storm drain, and lists only "individual residential car washing" among the conditionally exempt discharges (LBMC 8.96.050). The City's guidance for mobile businesses says that "by law" mobile detailers must keep all wash water and materials out of the storm drain, and that a waterless wash is preferable "whenever possible" (Public Works); storm drains carry water "without treatment" to rivers and the ocean (Long Beach). Long Beach Utilities adds: a hose needs a shut-off nozzle, and no runoff onto sidewalks, roadways, parking lots or structures (Long Beach Utilities). Our method: a rinseless wash with water we bring, on a water-capture mat, wherever the car is parked; the captured water leaves with us, we never use your hose, and nothing reaches your gutter or your building's garage drain. For engines, the City's guidance says the wash water must go through an oil/water separator before disposal at a centralized waste treatment facility, which is why engine bays in Long Beach are steamed and wiped over the mat.

4. Salt and sand by the water. Research on coastal corrosion finds the sea's effect "extends principally some few hundred meters from the shoreline and decays rapidly further inland" (Feliu, Morcillo and Chico, 1999). So a car in Naples, Belmont Shore, the Peninsula, Alamitos Beach or Bluff Park collects more salt than one inland in Bixby Knolls. For those cars we rinse the sand off before a mitt touches the paint, then clean the door jambs and wheel wells, where sand and salt collect; bonded fallout is paint decontamination.

5. Heat, dry summers and the rinse water. Long Beach Airport's August average high is 83.2°F against 76.7°F at LAX; June to September brings 0.21 inches of rain in total, and 81% of the year's roughly 12 inches falls December to March (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). With almost no summer rain, dust and salt stay on the car until it is washed. Most of the city gets blended water averaging 4.4 grains per gallon of hardness, and the imported-water zone averages 12.8, up to 17.5 (Long Beach Utilities 2025 report). So we wash in shade and dry by hand; spots that have etched go to water spot removal.

6. Near the port and the 710. SCAQMD's MATES V modelled the region's highest diesel-particulate concentration around the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, spreading along freeways, major roads and rail lines (MATES V, ch. 4). Cars parked in West Long Beach or driven daily on the 710 can feel rough after a wash; a clay decontamination lifts what washing leaves behind.
