1. Driveway, condo garage or office garage. 45.0% of Torrance households rent; 53.4% of homes are detached houses and 32.0% are in buildings of five or more units. In 90504, North Torrance, 65.1% of homes are detached houses; in 90503, West Torrance and the Del Amo area, 41.8% are in buildings of five or more units and 47.4% of households rent (ACS 2020–2024, tenure; units). In North Torrance, Walteria and Southwood the visit is usually in your driveway or garage. Around Del Amo and West Torrance it is more often a condo or apartment garage: check with the HOA or manager first, tell us the gate or fob routine, and pick a bay with space on both sides of the car.

2. Water, and where it goes. Torrance allows a vehicle to be washed only with a hand-held bucket or a hand-held hose with a positive self-closing shut-off nozzle (commercial car washes excepted), and bars washing down driveways, parking areas and sidewalks except to clear a safety or sanitary hazard; both rules are permanent and apply whichever supplier serves the address (TMC 76.4). The stormwater code lists "runoff from mobile auto washing" among illicit discharges and bars them from the storm drain system, which includes streets, curbs and gutters; the only car washing on its permitted list is "noncommercial car washing by residents or by nonprofit organizations" (TMC 410.1). So a hired wash in Torrance keeps every drop out of the gutter. We wash rinseless, with water we bring, on a capture mat under the car, and the mat's water leaves with us: the gutter is dry when we go, whether the car stood in the driveway or on the street.

3. Parked on the street. If the car lives on the street, we detail it there: the capture mat goes down under it, and nothing but a dry road is left when we pull away.

4. Tap water and spots. Torrance Municipal Water serves about 107,000 residents (2025 water quality report); the City says its area covers 78% of the city, with California Water Service as the other retail supplier (City of Torrance). In 2025, 68% of TMW's supply was imported MWD water and 32% came from three city wells and a groundwater desalination project; dissolved solids, sampled in 2023, ran 456–625 ppm in the MWD water and 630–760 ppm in city groundwater. Hard water is "high in dissolved minerals, largely calcium and magnesium" (USGS), and water that evaporates leaves its dissolved salts behind (USGS). So we wash in shade and dry by hand; spots already etched in are water spot removal.

5. Salt near the beach; dust everywhere from June to September. The effect of marine air on corrosion "extends principally some few hundred meters from the shoreline and decays rapidly further inland" (Feliu, Morcillo and Chico, 1999), in a study of metal, not paint. So salt in the air is a Hollywood Riviera and Torrance Beach matter: for those cars the pre-soak comes first and runs longer, and the jambs, sills and wheel wells get a pass of their own. Inland, in North Torrance or Walteria, the problem is dust: Torrance Airport gets 0.22 in of rain from June to September, and 82% of its 13.64-in year falls December to March. Its 5.8 days a year at 90°F lean to the fall, 3.1 of them in September and October (NOAA 1991–2020 normals; monthly), so those washes are booked for the morning or in shade.
