How a mobile PDR visit works
Aluminum panels, EVs, trucks and coated paint
- Aluminum. Rivian allows PDR on aluminum, noting that steel and aluminum "each may have limitations", and the Ford F-150 moved to an aluminum-alloy body with the 2015 model year (Aluminum Association). Tell us the model and we check the panel; aluminum is priced as an add-on.
- Teslas. Tesla's Model Y collision repair manual accepts PDR for cosmetic panel damage as long as no holes are drilled for tool access.
- Ceramic coating. Keco, a maker of glue-pulling tabs, recommends removing the coating where the tabs go, per the coating maker's directions, so the tabs grip the paint (I-CAR). The coating on that spot is restored afterwards and quoted with the dent: see ceramic coating.
- PPF. A panel under paint protection film is quoted case by case, because the film may need to come off that panel first.

The metal is pushed or pulled back into shape, and the factory paint is never sanded or painted. Door dings are from $299, small dents from $399 and creases from $749. The size, a body line, aluminum and access move the price, and the table above shows each band.
Is paintless dent repair cheaper than a body shop?
When the paint is intact, usually yes, and you keep the factory finish: there is no filler, primer, paint or blending to pay for, and the car stays where it is parked. The table gives the price by dent size. When the paint at the dent is damaged, it becomes a refinishing job, priced by a body shop.
How much does paintless dent repair cost without insurance, and should I file a claim?
Without insurance you pay the table price. Collision covers contact "with another vehicle or an object"; comprehensive covers damage "caused by something other than a collision", vandalism included (California Department of Insurance). Coverage can carry a deductible, so check your policy: below it, a claim pays nothing. If you do claim, your insurer cannot require a specific repair shop (Insurance Code 758.5).

What are the disadvantages of paintless dent repair?
PDR can't fix cracked or chipped paint, very sharp dents or stretched metal, or dents it can't reach without drilling. Steel and aluminum each have limits (Rivian: "each may have limitations"), and aluminum carries an add-on. Glue pulling on a coated car means removing the coating where the tabs go, then restoring it. And a poor repair counts too: Toyota Financial lists poorly done repairs as excess wear at lease end.
How much does car dent repair cost if the paint is damaged too?
Our table prices assume the paint is intact. If the paint at the dent is cracked or chipped, PDR can straighten the metal but cannot restore the finish: the panel needs refinishing, which is body-shop pricing, not PDR pricing, and we tell you on the photo quote. Scratches with no dent go to scratch removal.
