Tesla and EV Care Explained: Car Wash Mode, Washing, Soft Paint and the White Interior
Caring for a Tesla starts with Tesla's own manual: touchless automatic washes only, with Car Wash Mode on, and none at all recommended for Cybertruck; nothing above pH 13 and no acidic cleaners; mild soap and water on the vegan-leather seats (Model Y manual). Tesla's warranty treats stone chips as normal wear. These guides cover washing, detailing, the paint, the white interior, and what differs on Rivian and Lucid.

Does Tesla's warranty cover paint defects?
Tesla's booklet has no separate paint warranty. The Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship of parts Tesla makes or supplies for 4 years or 50,000 miles, and a 12-year Body Rust Limited Warranty covers rust that perforates a panel from the inside out because of a defect. Paint defects caused by accidents, neglect, improper maintenance or chemical substances are excluded, stone chips are normal wear, and damage from sunlight, tree sap, droppings and road debris is excluded (Tesla warranty). Not legal advice.
Do Rivian and Lucid have a car wash mode?
Rivian does: from Quick Controls, Car Wash mode rolls up the windows, closes the door handles and, if the car isn't charging, the charge port door, mutes the parking chimes, stops the automatic wipers and suppresses proximity locking. It works below 12 mph and turns off after a restart (Rivian). Lucid's Air manual describes no such mode: it says to leave the wipers off in a car wash and to use touch-free washes without acid cleansers (Lucid).
How do you get tar, sap or bird droppings off a Tesla?
Remove them as soon as you see them: Tesla lists bird droppings, tree resin, dead insects and tar spots as corrosive substances to remove immediately, and its Cybertruck page allows denatured alcohol on tar spots and stubborn grease, followed at once by water and a mild, non-detergent soap to take the alcohol off (Tesla). Lucid gives the same advice for tar on paint. Tesla's warranty excludes damage from sap and droppings, so speed is the protection.

Car Wash Mode and car washes: the short answers
Can you take a Tesla through a car wash? Yes, a touchless one: the Model 3 and Model Y manuals allow touchless car washes only, and nothing with brushes, cloth strips or foam rollers. Tesla doesn't recommend any automatic wash for Cybertruck, and it says car-wash damage is not covered by the warranty. The full answer, wash by wash: can you take a Tesla through a car wash.
What is Car Wash Mode on a Tesla? A setting that, in the Model Y manual's words, "closes all windows, locks the charge port, and disables windshield wipers, Sentry Mode, walk-away door locking, and parking sensor chimes." The car must be stationary and not charging, and the mode ends when you touch Exit or pass 9 mph.
How do you take a Tesla through a car wash? Unplug, stop, and turn on Car Wash Mode (Controls > Service > Car Wash Mode on Model 3 and Model Y). Enable Free Roll if a conveyor moves the car (it holds Neutral for the whole wash), then dry the glass and wipe the camera lenses. Why plain Neutral isn't enough: can you take a Tesla through a car wash.
Paint, the white interior and other EVs: the short answers
Do Teslas have soft paint? We found no paint hardness or thickness figure published by Tesla, so "soft" is a detailer's impression, but wash technique prevents most swirls, and a scratch your fingernail catches needs touch-up paint or a body shop, not more polish (how to detail a Tesla).
How do you keep a white Tesla interior white? Tesla's method is microfiber, warm water and mild soap. Our advice is a regular wipe, weekly if the seats see dark denim: dye from new denim is the usual stain, and Tesla says it "cannot always be safely cleaned off". Diluted isopropyl alcohol is Tesla's last resort on white seats only, never black (how to detail a Tesla).
Is the Tesla detailing kit enough? For spot cleaning between washes; it has no wash shampoo, mitt, wheel brush or vacuum (how to detail a Tesla).
How often should you wash a Tesla? Tesla publishes no interval; it says to remove droppings, tree resin and tar immediately, so where the car parks sets the schedule (how often should you wash a Tesla; for any car, how often should you wash your car).
What changes on a Rivian or a Lucid? Rivian allows standard car washes and caps pressure washers at 1,100 psi; Lucid allows touch-free washes only and calls wash mitts abrasive. Neither should be washed while charging. Side by side: how to detail a Tesla.
Film, coating or both on a Tesla
Because Tesla's warranty leaves chips to the owner, protection is the owner's choice. Film stops chips; a ceramic coating makes washing easier and helps with sap, droppings and sun, but it doesn't stop a stone. Whether film pays off on a Tesla is in is PPF worth it, the coating case in is ceramic coating worth it on a Tesla, and the choice between them in ceramic coating vs PPF. Model-by-model film coverage, cameras and sensors are on Tesla PPF.
Rather have it done to Tesla's rules? Tesla car wash and detailing comes to wherever the car is parked, with Car Wash Mode on and a pH-neutral shampoo.
