Can You Take a Tesla Through a Car Wash? Car Wash Mode, Which Wash, Soap and How Often
Yes, but only a touchless one. Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y manuals say to use "touchless car washes only", with Car Wash Mode on, and "Damage caused by car washes is not covered by the warranty." Tesla doesn't recommend any automatic wash for Cybertruck. The other option is a careful hand wash with a pH-neutral car shampoo.

Which car wash is safe for a Tesla
| Wash | What Tesla says | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Touchless automatic (jets and chemicals, nothing touches the car) | "If washing in an automatic car wash, use touchless car washes only" (Model Y manual) | Allowed, with Car Wash Mode and Free Roll on. Mind the chemistry (below) |
| Brush, soft-cloth or foam tunnel | Touchless washes are defined as having "no parts, such as brushes, that touch the surfaces"; anything that touches is outside that line | Not per Tesla's manual, whatever the sign calls the material |
| Hand wash | A "mild, pH-neutral soap (such as car shampoo)", out of direct sunlight, dried with microfiber (Tesla, Cybertruck) | The gentlest option, and the one to make routine |
| Self-serve bay (pressure wand) | Keep the nozzle at least 12 inches (30 cm) from the surface and moving; don't aim at seals, electronic modules or exposed cabling (Tesla, Cybertruck) | Fine for rinsing and your own mitt; the bay's foaming brush touches the paint like any brush |
| Rinseless or waterless wash | Tesla's Cybertruck page allows a "non-ionic pH-neutral waterless wash" with a microfiber towel | Fine on light dust, not on caked grit (how waterless washes work) |
| Cybertruck in any automatic wash | "Tesla does not recommend taking Cybertruck through an automatic car wash" | Hand or waterless wash; Car Wash Mode if an automatic wash can't be avoided |
What Car Wash Mode does, and what happens without it
Tesla's Model Y manual says Car Wash Mode "closes all windows, locks the charge port, and disables windshield wipers, Sentry Mode, walk-away door locking, and parking sensor chimes" (Model Y manual). The car must be stationary and not actively charging to turn it on, and the mode switches off when you touch Exit or the car goes faster than 9 mph (15 km/h).
Tesla's Cybertruck page explains the wipers: make sure they are off "to avoid the risk of damaging the wipers" (Tesla, Cybertruck). The locked charge port answers the common question of a port door opening mid-wash. Tesla's warning: failure to use the mode "may result in damage (for example, to the charge port or windshield wipers)", and car-wash damage is not covered by the warranty (Model 3 manual).
For automatic washes the mode adds Free Roll, which "keeps your vehicle in Neutral and activates free roll for the duration of the wash, while preventing [the car] from applying the Parking brake if you leave the driver's seat."
How to take a Tesla through a touchless car wash
- 01
Check the wash first
Touchless only: no brushes, cloth strips or foam rollers anywhere in the bay or tunnel. Read the posted vehicle limits at the entrance.
- 02
Unplug and stop
Car Wash Mode needs the car stationary and not charging.
- 03
Turn on Car Wash Mode
On Model 3 and Model Y the manual's path is Controls > Service > Car Wash Mode; on Cybertruck it is Controls > Car Wash. Menus move with software updates, so check your own car's manual if the path differs.
- 04
Enable Free Roll if the wash moves the car
Press the brake and touch Enable Free Roll, or, with Car Wash Mode on, shift into Neutral. Tesla describes Free Roll for automatic washes; a conveyor that pulls the car along needs it.
- 05
Stay put
Hands off the wheel and pedals unless the attendant signals; keep the doors closed.
- 06
Exit and check
Touch Exit, or drive off: the mode ends above 9 mph. Look over the wiper arms and charge port door, wipe the camera lenses, and dry the glass and paint before the water spots (next section).
Can you just put a Tesla in Neutral for a car wash?
Not reliably. A Tesla shifts itself into Park to prevent roll-away at low speeds: the Model 3 manual says this happens "whenever you connect a charge cable, unbuckle your seat belt, or open the door while in Drive, Reverse, or Neutral" (Model 3 manual). Free Roll exists for this: it holds Neutral for the whole wash and keeps the parking brake off even if you leave the seat. Plain Neutral also leaves the wipers, windows and charge port unprotected.
Touchless washes clean with chemistry, so treat them as the exception
With no brushes, a touchless wash has to dissolve the dirt. Some touchless systems run two steps: an acidic presoak, then an alkaline one. One touchless low-pH presoak is described as "highly acidic" with ammonium bifluoride, "for use as a first step in a two step touchless wash process with an alkaline second step" (product page); one heavy-duty alkaline touchless presoak is listed at pH 13–13.6 (product page).
Tesla's own cleaning limits are to "avoid exposure to soaps and chemicals above pH 13" and "Do not use acidic products either", and "Damage or discoloration resulting from cleaning products is not covered by the warranty" (Tesla, Cybertruck). Those presoak figures are for the concentrate, which the wash dilutes, so what reaches the car is milder, and Tesla still names touchless as its one approved automatic wash. The practical reading: a touchless wash when you need one, a hand wash as the routine.
Then dry it. Consumer Reports warns that letting a car air-dry leaves "watermarks caused by minerals in hard water" (CR). LADWP's 2022 averages were 8.6 grains per gallon in the San Fernando Valley and western LA, 9.8 in Silver Lake, Downtown and South LA and 16.3 in eastern LA and the Harbor, where above 7 counts as hard (LADWP). A spot-free rinse helps; a microfiber towel on the glass roof before you drive helps more. Spots that have already etched are covered in how to remove water spots.
How to wash a Tesla by hand
- 01
Shade and Car Wash Mode
Tesla says "Do not wash in direct sunlight." Turn on Car Wash Mode even for a hand wash: the wipers stay off on wet glass, the windows stay shut and the doors don't lock while one is open.
- 02
Rinse
Loosen grit with water before any mitt touches the paint. A pressure washer stays 12 inches (30 cm) away and moving, never aimed at window, door or hood seals, electronic modules or exposed cabling (Tesla, Cybertruck). In the City of LA a hose needs a self-closing shut-off nozzle (LADWP); where the water may go is in can you wash your car in your driveway.
- 03
Wash top down
A mild, pH-neutral car shampoo and a clean microfiber mitt, roof and glass first, the lower panels last, rinsing the mitt often. Wheels get their own bucket and tools.
- 04
Remove anything corrosive now
Tesla lists bird droppings, tree resin, dead insects, tar spots, road salt and industrial fallout as substances to remove immediately, without harsh abrasives.
- 05
Rinse and dry
Rinse before the soap dries, then dry thoroughly with microfiber, the glass roof and glass included.
- 06
Cameras and Car Wash Mode off
Wipe every camera lens: Tesla says to keep them free of "dirt, condensation, or obstructions". Then touch Exit. The full method, with the two-bucket routine, is in how to wash a car step by step; seats, screen and glass inside are in how to detail a Tesla.
Can you use Dawn dish soap to wash a Tesla?
Not as a routine. Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y manuals call for "a mild, high-quality car shampoo" (Model Y manual), its Cybertruck page a "mild, pH-neutral soap (such as car shampoo)", and Consumer Reports says not to use "dishwashing detergent" on paint because it "may strip off the protective wax" (CR). Kelley Blue Book adds that dish soap removes "any previously applied car wax or paint sealant" and lacks the lubricants of car shampoo (KBB). It has one use: stripping old wax before new protection goes on. On a coated or filmed Tesla, follow the coating or film maker's care card instead; film care is on Tesla PPF.
How often should you wash a Tesla?
Tesla publishes no interval. What it does say is to remove corrosive substances such as droppings, resin and tar "immediately", so the real schedule is set by what lands on the car. Consumer Reports calls frequent washing "the best way to maintain a new-car finish" (CR). In practice: a regular wash on a cadence that matches where the car parks (outdoors under trees, near the coast or in a garage), plus a spot clean the day a dropping or sap lands. More on wash frequency: how often should you wash your car.
Professional help
When to call a pro
If a touchless tunnel is the only option near you, or the car needs more than a wash, a mobile hand wash comes to wherever the Tesla is parked: home, office, garage or street. Our crews follow Tesla's own rules, with Car Wash Mode on, a pH-neutral shampoo, shade, our own water on a water-capture mat, and the glass roof dried by hand. A recurring visit is the same method on a set schedule.
Questions
Are Tesla tires too big to fit in a car wash?
Tunnel washes post their own limits on tire width, vehicle width and ground clearance, so check the sign at the entrance before you pull onto the track. Fit is the smaller question, though: if the tunnel cleans with brushes or cloth, Tesla's manual rules it out whatever the tire size.
Can a car wash get water into a Tesla's battery or electronics?
Tesla's washing cautions are specific: keep a pressure washer at least 12 inches away and moving, don't aim it at window, door or hood seals, electronic modules or exposed cabling, and never spray at high velocity toward the charge port while the car is charging (Tesla). Car Wash Mode also needs the car not to be charging, so unplug before any wash.
Why does my Tesla show camera warnings after a car wash?
Water drops or film left on the lenses can block a camera's view. Tesla says to keep the exterior cameras free of dirt, condensation and obstructions, so wipe each lens with a clean microfiber after the wash. A warning that stays after the lenses are clean and dry is a question for Tesla service.
Why won't Car Wash Mode turn on?
Check its two conditions first: Tesla's manuals say the car must be stationary and not actively charging. Stop the car, end the charge and unplug, then try again. On Model S and Model X the path is Controls > Service > Car Wash Mode, the same as on Model 3 and Model Y (Model S manual; Model X manual); on Cybertruck it is Controls > Car Wash. Menus move with software updates, so if the path differs, check the manual for your own car.
What should I check if I went through a car wash without Car Wash Mode?
Tesla names the two parts at risk: the charge port and the windshield wipers. Look for a bent or lifted wiper arm and a charge port door that is open, loose or doesn't close, and note any damage before you leave the wash. Tesla says damage caused by car washes is not covered by its warranty.
