How Does a Waterless Car Wash Work? Waterless vs Rinseless, Scratches and Black Cars

A waterless car wash is a spray of surfactants and lubricating polymers: it loosens dirt, wraps it in a slick film and lets a clean microfiber towel lift it off, with no bucket or rinse. A rinseless wash does the same from a bucket of diluted solution and a soaked mitt. Both suit light dirt, not mud.

How a waterless car wash works

An ordinary wash relies on water to do two jobs: soften the dirt and carry it off the paint. A waterless wash hands both jobs to chemistry and towels. Surfactants loosen the film that holds dust to the paint, and polymers coat each particle and the paint so the two slide apart instead of grinding together. The maker of Optimum No Rinse describes its formula as one that helps "release dirt from the surface, encapsulate contamination, and provide lubrication so it can be safely wiped away" (ONR).

The same maker's dilution table shows the difference between the two methods. Its rinseless wash is 1 oz of concentrate in 2 gallons of water; its waterless wash is 8 oz in 1 gallon (ONR). That makes the waterless mix 16 times stronger, because there is no bucket to take the dirt away: each panel needs all its lubrication at once, and the dirt ends up in the towel. So the towels matter as much as the bottle. A towel face that has picked up grit is the next panel's sandpaper.

Carmakers that allow it are specific about the product. For its Cybertruck, Tesla says to "hand wash using a non-ionic pH-neutral waterless wash with a high quality microfiber towel" (Tesla). Tesla owners: can you take a Tesla through a car wash.

How to use a waterless car wash

  1. 01

Check that the car is only dusty

Run a finger along a lower door panel. If it comes back gritty or the dirt is caked on, the car needs a rinse or a pre-soak first (next section).

  2. 02

Work in the shade on cool paint

Hyundai's manual says not to wash "in direct sunlight or when the body of the vehicle is warm" (Hyundai). On hot paint the spray dries before the towel arrives.

  3. 03

Fold the towels and keep them separate

Fold each plush towel into quarters for eight faces. Keep one set for the paint, one for buffing and an old one for the wheels.

  4. 04

    Spray one small section generously

Half a hood or one door at a time, top of the car first. The panel should be visibly wet: with a thin mist, the towel drags the dirt instead of lifting it.

  5. 05

    Lift, don't scrub

Wipe in one straight line with almost no pressure, then turn the towel to a clean face. Never go back over the panel with a face that has dirt on it.

  6. 06

    Buff with a dry towel

Buff off the remaining haze, then move to the next section. Lower panels and wheels last, with their own towels.

How a rinseless wash differs in practice

A rinseless wash puts the mitt back in a bucket after every panel, so most of the dirt sinks there instead of riding along in a towel. The maker's directions: add 1 oz to 2 gallons of water, "soak the sponge, wash mitt, or microfiber towel in the solution", "wash one section at a time" and "dry each section with a clean microfiber drying towel" (ONR). On a dirtier car, soak each panel first with the same solution from a pump sprayer and give the dirt a moment to loosen before the mitt touches it.

The same maker says that for a heavily soiled car you may need to "remove the bulk of the debris first with a pre-rinse" (ONR). "Rinseless" means no rinse after the wash; it doesn't forbid one before.

Does a waterless or rinseless wash scratch the car?

It can, the same way any wash can: by dragging grit across the paint. Wiping a dusty car is not new advice gone wrong. Hyundai warns that "wiping dust or dirt off the body with a dry cloth will scratch the finish" (Hyundai), and a waterless wash with too little spray or a dirty towel is close to that dry wipe. Used on light dust, with plenty of product and clean towel faces, the risk is low. Used on a dirty car, it's high.

Will it damage paint or wax? Not by chemistry, if the product is a car-care wash used as directed. The ONR maker says its wash "does not interfere with ceramic coatings, waxes, sealants, or PPF" (ONR); wash-and-wax sprays leave a layer of their own. Swirls a wash has already left are fixed by polishing, not by a better wash: how to remove swirl marks from a car.

Rinse first, don't wipe, when

  • You can feel grit or see sand, typical after a day near the beach or on a dirt road.
  • There is mud or caked road grime on the lower panels, wheels or wheel wells.
  • The car is covered in wildfire ash. LA County Public Health says to use "a gentle hose spray to remove loose ash" first, and to "avoid scrubbing dry ash, as it can scratch paint" (Public Health; does wildfire ash damage car paint).
  • The towel drags or squeaks instead of gliding: add product, or stop and rinse.
  • The panel is hot and the spray dries before you can wipe it.

Rinseless wash on black cars: worth it?

Yes, with more care than on a light color. Black and other dark paint shows every fine scratch in direct sun, so the margin for error is smaller, and it gets hotter: Berkeley Lab researchers measured the roof of a silver car up to 45°F cooler than the roof of a black one in the sun (LBNL). On hot dark paint the solution dries while you work.

  • Prefer rinseless to waterless on a dark car that is more than dusty: more liquid on the panel, and the bucket takes the dirt.
  • Pre-soak each panel and let it sit before the mitt touches it.
  • Shade or a garage, early or late in the day.
  • More towels, changed sooner, and the lightest possible touch when buffing.
  • Check in daylight from an angle after the first few washes. If fine marks appear, the method needs changing, not the product.

Choosing a waterless car wash product

  • pH-neutral and, if your carmaker asks, non-ionic, as Tesla specifies (Tesla).
  • A maker that states what it is safe on: clear coat, glass, coatings, PPF, matte paint and wraps, as the label applies to your car.
  • A heavy-soil warning on the label. A maker that tells you when not to use it is being straight with you.
  • Concentrate or ready-to-use. A concentrate can be mixed as a rinseless wash, a waterless spray or a detailer; a ready spray only does the one job.
  • Wash-and-wax or plain. Wax and polymer additives add gloss and water beading; plain washes leave an existing coating as it is.

What can you use to wash a car without a car wash or a hose?

  • A rinseless wash from a bucket: the closest thing to a full wash with no hose, in a driveway, a carport or your own garage spot.
  • A waterless spray for dust between washes. Consumer Reports calls a waterless detail spray "a convenient way to spot-clean" (Consumer Reports), and spot-cleaning is its real job.
  • A self-serve bay, if the car needs a real rinse.
  • A mobile wash where the car is parked.

Household substitutes such as dish soap strip wax and aren't made for paint: what to wash a car with. In the City of LA, a hose needs a self-closing shut-off nozzle and no water may run into the street: where you may wash a car in LA.

Low water also means low runoff. When a car is washed in a driveway or on the street, Long Beach's stormwater guidance for mobile businesses notes, heavy metals, oil and sediment go "into the street, gutters and eventually into the storm drain system", and "it is preferable to use a waterless car wash whenever possible". The same sheet warns that "even biodegradable products impact our waterways" (Long Beach), so a green label is no license to let the bucket drain into the gutter.

Hard water. The ONR maker says its rinseless wash works with "normal tap water" (ONR), but LA tap water is hard: LADWP's 2022 zone averages are 8.6, 9.8 and 16.3 grains per gallon, above its 7-grain line (LADWP). Dry each panel before moving on, and the minerals never get the chance to spot.

Professional help

When to call a pro

Have it done when the car is past light dust, the paint is dark and you'd rather not risk the towels, or there is nowhere to wash where you park. Our mobile car wash picks the method by how dirty the car is: waterless for light dust on a car washed often, rinseless on most visits, and a contained rinse for mud, beach sand, wildfire ash or salt. Every visit is on a water-capture mat, with the crew's own water, and every panel is hand-dried. Prices by vehicle size are on car detailing prices.

Questions

Is a waterless car wash safe on ceramic coatings and paint protection film?

Usually, if the label says so. The ONR maker says its wash is "safe for ceramic coatings" and safe on PPF, vinyl wrap and matte finishes (ONR). Check your coating or film maker's care sheet too. On matte paint, skip wash-and-wax sprays: Kia says not to use "a cleaner that finishes with wax" on its matte finish (Kia). Coated cars: how to maintain a ceramic coated car.

What is the difference between a waterless wash and a quick detailer?

Mostly the job. ONR's maker even lists the same 8 oz per gallon mix for both (ONR). A quick detailer touches up a clean car: a fingerprint, a water spot, a dusty hood. A waterless wash cleans a whole lightly dirty car, so it is used more heavily, with far more towels.

Can you use waterless car wash on windows?

Most are glass-safe; check the label. Buff the glass with a dry, short-pile towel to avoid streaks. Tesla says not to use alcohol on the head or tail lights (Tesla), and tinted glass follows the film's care card: how to wash a car step by step.

Will a waterless wash leave water spots with LA's hard water?

A waterless spray rarely does, because it is buffed off before it dries. A rinseless bucket of LA tap water can, if a panel dries on its own: LADWP rates its water hard (LADWP). Dry each panel straight away. Spots that won't wipe off have etched in and need polishing.
