Will a Car Wash Damage My Vehicle? What Each Wash Type Does to Paint

It can. Any wash that drags grit across the paint can leave fine scratches called swirls: brushes and cloth in automatic washes, or a dirty mitt and the bay brush at a self-serve. Touchless washes avoid contact but rely on stronger chemicals and clean less thoroughly. A careful hand wash, dried at once, is the gentlest choice.

What is a brushless car wash?

"Brushless" is a sign on the building, not a category. EPA splits automatic washes into friction and frictionless, which "relies on high-pressure nozzles" (EPA). A brushless wash is a friction wash that has swapped bristle brushes for soft foam or cloth strips meant to glide over the paint. As one wash-equipment maker puts it, "'Brushless' does not mean 'no-touch'" (equipment maker). The strips still touch every car in the line, so ask before you pay whether anything touches the car. If yes, it is a friction wash, whatever the sign says.

Do car washes leave swirls?

Friction washes can, and so can a careless hand wash. A swirl is a fine scratch in the clear coat, left when grit is dragged across it. They add up pass by pass and show in direct sun, most on dark paint.

Consumer Reports names two ways automatic washes do harm: motorized brushes "grinding in grime from other cars", and brushes "catching on to loose parts such as rear wipers or trim pieces" (Consumer Reports). Towels are the other risk: EPA notes a wash's drying towels are "often laundered in onsite washing machines" (EPA), so between loads each one carries grit from the cars before yours.

A wash can't remove swirls; polishing levels them: how to remove swirl marks from a car and scratch removal.

Are touchless car washes safe for paint, and do they actually clean?

Safer for scratches, harsher in chemistry. Consumer Reports calls touchless washes "best for protecting your car", with the trade-off that they "may not get the finish as clean as you would like" (Consumer Reports).

Without a mitt, chemicals do the work, often in two steps. One maker's acid presoak is "highly acidic" and contains ammonium bifluoride, made for "a two step touchless wash process with an alkaline second step" (Simoniz presoak). An alkaline touchless presoak from another maker lists a pH of 13 to 13.6, for "oily dirt, grease, and road film" (Turtle Wax Pro). A pH-neutral car shampoo sits at 7. Kia's manual rules out "strong soap, chemical detergents or hot water" on the car, and "acid detergents or strong detergents containing high alkaline or caustic agents" on chrome-plated or anodized aluminum parts (Kia).

Do they clean? Loose dirt and much of the oily film, yes; with nothing wiping the paint, some film stays. Touchless or soft-cloth? For scratches, touchless; for a filthy car, neither: a pre-rinse and a hand wash lift heavy dirt without dragging it.

What is the safest car wash to not scratch your car?

In order, gentlest first:

  1. A careful hand wash: the loose grit rinsed or soaked off first, then a clean microfiber mitt, a pH-neutral shampoo and fresh towels, in the shade. The method: how to wash a car step by step.
  2. A touch-free automatic, with the car dried by you, using clean microfiber, not the wash's towels.
  3. A friction wash, soft-cloth or brush, on uncoated paint that you plan to polish one day anyway.

A hand wash beats an automatic only when it is careful: one bucket, a dropped mitt or a dry wipe scratches as surely as a brush. Where a maker has its own rule, it wins: Kia says an automatic wash with rotating brushes "should not be used" on matte paint (Kia); XPEL says tunnel washes "will severely scratch and damage" COLOR PPF (XPEL). Coated cars: can a ceramic coated car go through a car wash.

Before you drive into an automatic wash

  • Ask whether anything touches the car, and check your paint, coating or film maker's rules. Fix or remove loose trim, a loose rear wiper or a rack first.
  • Close every window and the sunroof fully; Kia warns water can get in around the windows and door gaps.
  • EV owners: close and lock the doors. Kia says to, to protect the charging door; Teslas need Car Wash Mode (Tesla guide).
  • Dry the glass and flat panels at the exit with your own microfiber: LADWP's zone averages of 8.6 to 16.3 grains per gallon are above its 7-grain "hard" line (LADWP).
  • Test the brakes at low speed as you pull out; Kia asks for this after every wash.

Is it bad to run your car through a car wash every day?

Frequency isn't the problem; what touches the car each time is. A gentle hand wash can be repeated often, but a daily automatic wash adds up:

  • Friction: each pass of the cloth can drag grit, and swirls accumulate.
  • Chemistry: acid and alkaline presoaks on paint, trim and seals every day.
  • Spots: each wash that air-dries in LA leaves hard-water minerals behind.

Most cars need a wash every week or two: how often should you wash your car. A club against a scheduled hand wash: what is a maintenance wash.

How long does an automatic car wash take?

A few minutes in the wash itself; the line, the vacuums and drying the glass add the rest. The operators' own figures:

  • Express tunnel: "3 minutes or less" at Quick Quack (Quick Quack), "less than 3 minutes" at Tommy's Express (Tommy's Express).
  • In-bay automatic: one equipment maker rates its in-bay machine at "2-3 minute car washes" (Petit Auto Wash).
  • Full-service: Caliber Car Wash says full service "typically takes 30 minutes or more to complete, in addition to line wait time" (Caliber Car Wash).
  • Hand wash: longer, because every panel is washed and dried by hand. A mobile visit with the interior is counted in hours, not minutes, but the car stays where it is parked: how long each package takes.

For the interior alone, Mister Car Wash puts its interior service at "just 15 minutes" (Mister Car Wash); that is not the length of the whole wash.

Car wash packages: which extras are worth paying for

Car wash extras and when each is worth paying for
ExtraWhat it isWorth it when
Undercarriage wash"Brushes or high-pressure sprays on the sides and bottom of the vehicle" (EPA)After the beach, mud, a trail or a snow trip. Kia says to wash after each off-road trip and keep the rocker-panel drain holes clear; Caltrans salts snowy roads and washes its own salt equipment after every storm "to prevent corrosion"
Spot-free rinseThe last rinse, "with fresh or membrane-filtered water" (EPA)In LA, usually: hard tap water spots. Still dry the glass
Spray wax or sealer"An optional surface finish that is sprayed on the vehicle" (EPA)A short top-up on uncoated paint, not a coating; skip it on a coated car (wax or ceramic coating)
Hand dryStaff wipe the car with towels or chamoisOnly if the towels are clean; otherwise dry it yourself with your own microfiber
Interior cleaningStaff clean the inside (full-service, or a bay after the tunnel at flex-serve)When the cabin needs it; an express exterior wash does the outside only

Sources: EPA, Kia, the Caltrans Maintenance Manual (which notes salt's "corrosion of metal"), DRB.

Is it worth paying more for a car wash? Choose the wash type first, because it decides what touches the car, and the package second. The best value, by situation:

  • Light dirt and some time: a self-serve bay's wand with your own mitt and towels, skipping the shared brush.
  • Uncoated paint and little time: a touch-free automatic, which Consumer Reports calls "best for protecting your car" (Consumer Reports), dried with your own microfiber instead of a paid hand dry.
  • A wash every week or more: a club, but only once you use it more often than its break-even (the membership arithmetic).
  • Coated, matte or color-PPF paint: the maker's rules in the first table come before any package.

Are car washes liable if they scratch your car?

They can be, and the facts decide it. California's general rule is that everyone is responsible for an injury caused by "want of ordinary care or skill in the management of his or her property", except where the injured party's own lack of care brought it on (Civil Code 1714). A torn brush strip or a wiper ripped off at the wash is easier to prove than swirls that may have been there for months.

What to do if a car wash damaged your car

  1. 01

    Check before you leave

Walk around the car on the lot; photograph the damage, the wash and your receipt.

  2. 02

    Report it on the spot

Tell the manager before you drive away, and ask for a written incident report.

  3. 03

    Get a repair estimate

In writing, from a body or paint-correction shop.

  4. 04

    Ask for payment in writing

"The court wants you to ask the other side for the money you think they owe you before you start a small claims case" (California Courts).

  5. 05

    Small claims, if they refuse

In small claims "you can ask a lawyer for advice before you go to court, but you can't have one with you in court"; the court's page lists the limits on what you can claim (California Courts).

More questions about car washes and paint

Can I get the inside of my car cleaned at a car wash?

At a full-service wash, yes: staff clean the inside while you wait. At a flex-serve wash, you pull into a bay after the tunnel for the interior. An express exterior wash does the outside only (DRB). Stains, pet hair and odors need interior car detailing, not a wash.

Is it better to wash a car yourself or go through a car wash?

Done carefully, washing it yourself is gentler, because you control what touches the paint. At a self-serve bay, use the wand and skip the shared brush; EPA puts self-service washing at 15.0 gallons a car on average (EPA). At home in Los Angeles the water rules apply: is it legal to wash my car in my driveway in California.

Can a ceramic-coated car go through an automatic car wash?

Only if the coating maker's aftercare allows it, and then usually only a touch-free one: can a ceramic coated car go through a car wash.

Hand wash or automatic wash: when should you pay for detailing instead?

When a wash no longer gets the car clean: paint that feels rough after washing, swirls you can see in the sun, stained seats or a smell that comes back. A wash removes what landed since the last one; a full detail deep-cleans and decontaminates. Where one ends and the other begins: car detailing vs car wash.
