Car Washing Explained: Safe Methods, Wash Types and Where You Can Wash a Car in LA
A safe wash lifts loose grit before anything touches the paint, cleans with car shampoo and a clean microfiber mitt, and dries the car at once, because LA tap water is hard. At home in Los Angeles, use a bucket or a hose with a self-closing shut-off nozzle, and let no water run into the street. These guides cover the method, wash types, the LA rules and how often to wash.

More questions about washing a car
Do car washes in California have to recycle their water?
New ones do. In-bay and conveyor car washes permitted and constructed after 1 January 2014 must recycle and reuse at least 60 percent of their wash and rinse water, or use recycled water from their supplier for that share (Water Code 10951). EPA's figures show what reclamation does: a friction tunnel drops from 65.8 gallons of fresh water a car to as little as 7.8 (EPA).
How do you wash a car with matte paint?
By hand, gently, and with nothing that adds shine. Kia's owner's manual says not to use an automatic wash with rotating brushes, to wash with a soft cloth or sponge and dry with a microfiber towel, and not to use a cleaner that finishes with wax, nor a polish or an abrasive. Wax that gets on matte paint should come off at once with a silicone remover (Kia).
Do you need to dry a car after an automatic car wash?
In LA, yes, whatever the blowers leave. LADWP's 2022 averages are 8.6, 9.8 and 16.3 grains per gallon across its zones, above its 7-grain "hard" line, and it notes that softened water leaves "fewer water spots" on "automobile finishes" (LADWP). Wipe the glass and the flat panels with clean microfiber before you drive. EPA describes the last rinse as "fresh or membrane-filtered water" (EPA), so ask which your wash uses; either way, check the glass.

Car wash types: what touches the paint
| Wash | What touches the paint | Water per car | Read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand wash, two buckets | A microfiber mitt and car shampoo, after the loose grit is rinsed or soaked off | A bucket, or a hose with a shut-off nozzle | How to wash a car step by step |
| Rinseless wash | A mitt soaked in solution; each panel dried at once, no rinse | "Less than 2 gallons", one maker says (ONR) | How waterless and rinseless washes work |
| Waterless wash | A spray, then microfiber towels that lift the dirt | A spray bottle; for light dust only | How waterless and rinseless washes work |
| Touch-free automatic | Nothing but high-pressure spray and detergent | 85.3 gallons of fresh water in a tunnel without reclamation, as little as 16.8 with it | Will a car wash damage my vehicle |
| Friction automatic (tunnel or in-bay) | Cloth curtains or brushes, which also touch every car before yours | 65.8 gallons in a tunnel without reclamation, as little as 7.8 with it | Will a car wash damage my vehicle |
| Self-serve bay | You, with a handheld spray wand, and sometimes the bay's brush | 15.0 gallons on average | How to wash a car step by step |
| Mobile hand wash | A hand wash where the car is parked, by a crew with its own water | Usually rinseless; heavy dirt gets a contained rinse | Mobile car wash |
Water figures for automatic washes are EPA's, which sorts them into friction, where "a cloth curtain" touches the car, and frictionless or touch-free; in-bay automatics of either kind average 60.0 gallons, 8.0 with reclamation (EPA). Consumer Reports warns that motorized brushes can grind in "grime from other cars", and calls touchless washes "best for protecting your car" though they "may not get the finish as clean" (Consumer Reports). EVs: can you take a Tesla through a car wash.
Washing a car in Los Angeles: the rules in brief
Residents of the City of LA may wash their own cars at home: the city's storm drain code lists "non commercial car washing by residents" as conditionally exempt (LAMC 64.70.03). The rules are about water, and LADWP's current rules (Phase 2) include three on washing (LADWP):
- "No washing vehicles without using a hose with a self-closing water shut-off nozzle." A bucket needs none.
- "No runoff onto streets, driveways, and gutters."
- No watering of hard surfaces, "parking areas" included, so the hose goes on the car, never on the concrete.
In an apartment or condo, the lease and the building's or HOA's rules come first. The street, HOAs, other cities and the permits a mobile washer needs: is it legal to wash my car in my driveway in California. Where a mobile wash can be done: mobile car wash.
Short answers
How do you wash car windows without streaks? On cool glass in the shade, with one towel damp with cleaner and a dry one to buff; inside, spray the towel, not the glass. Tinted glass follows the film's care card: how to wash a car step by step.
Should I wash my car before it rains? If it's dirty, yes. Rain loosens some dust, then dries and leaves what it carried, while a clean, protected car sheds it: how often should you wash your car.
Does car wash soap expire or go bad? Not on a date, but it can go off: it separates and won't remix, smells different or stops foaming. Keep it closed and off a hot garage shelf (how to wash a car step by step).
Do car washes damage your car, and what is a brushless wash? Any wash that drags grit across the paint can leave swirls; the table shows what touches it in each kind. "Brushless" isn't an industry category, so ask whether cloth touches the car: will a car wash damage my vehicle.
Is an unlimited wash club the same as a maintenance plan? No: a club buys drive-through tunnel washes; a plan books a hand wash where the car is parked, on a fixed day (car wash membership; what is a maintenance wash).
How do fleets, offices and apartment buildings buy washing? As a program: fleet washing, an employee car wash day or a residents' amenity. One car in a building garage is a mobile car wash with the building's OK. Background: what is fleet washing.
