Car Detailing Explained: Detail vs Wash, Mobile vs Shop, How Often and Whether It Is Worth It
Car detailing cleans each part of a car, inside and out, until the result is right, then protects the paint, leather and plastics; a wash only takes loose dirt off the outside. A mobile detail is the same work done where the car is parked, with the crew's own water and power. These guides cover detail vs wash, mobile vs shop, whether it pays, how to vet a detailer and how to detail a car yourself.

More questions about car detailing
Can detailing void a car's warranty?
Not by itself. The FTC puts the federal rule this way: "it is illegal for manufacturers or dealers to refuse to honor a warranty or to deny coverage simply because someone other than the dealer did work on the car", and dealers "must be able to demonstrate that improper repair caused the damage" they refuse to cover (FTC). What matters is the owner's manual: some makers warn against water in the engine compartment, which is why an engine bay cleaning starts by reading it. A coating or film carries its maker's own warranty, on the maker's terms.
Should you detail a car before storing it?
Yes, at least the outside. Consumer Reports' advice for a car put away for a long stretch: "Wash and wax the body of your car to prevent accumulated dirt, bugs, or tree sap from bonding to the surface", leave the hood open and use rodent repellent, and keep the battery on a maintainer (Consumer Reports). A full detail covers the wash and the protection, and empties the cabin of anything that would sit there for months.
Should you detail a used car before or after you buy it?
After. Before, look at the car as it is: Consumer Reports notes that "A musty, moldy, or mildewy smell could indicate water leaks", that "An acrid smell may indicate that the car was used by a smoker", and, under the hood, "Dirt and dust are normal, but be wary if you see oil splattered about" (Consumer Reports). A fresh detail and a fragrance can hide those clues. Once the car is yours, a full detail clears the last owner's grime; a smell that comes back needs odor removal.

Mobile or shop: the appointment in brief
A mobile detail is the same hand work done in your driveway, an office or building garage, or on the street, with room to open every door. A self-contained crew brings its own water and power, so you supply nothing, and you don't need to be home if the crew can reach and open the car. Film installs, bodywork and anything that needs a lift still go to a shop.

Short answers
What is automobile detailing? Auto, car and automobile detailing are one trade: cleaning each part of a vehicle, inside and out, until the result is right, then protecting it. The definition and how it differs from a wash: car detailing vs car wash.
How do you detail a car yourself? In an order where no step undoes the last: the interior first, then wheels, wash, decontamination, drying, protection and glass, in shade on cool paint, a separate microfiber for each job. Tools and the mistakes to avoid: car detailing tips.
How long does it take to detail a car? Hours, not minutes, depending on the package and the car's size; the time for each package is on car detailing prices.
Is detailing worth it? When you keep the car, before a private sale, and before a lease pre-inspection, so removable stains are gone. It cleans, it doesn't repair: tears, burns and scratches through the paint stay. Older cars, resale and the downsides: is detailing a car worth it.
How often should you detail a car? When washing stops being enough: the paint feels rough, water no longer beads, or the cabin needs more than a vacuum. Regular washes in between keep it there (membership); timing by car and use: how often should you detail your car.
Do detailers clean the engine? Not in a standard full detail: the engine bay is an add-on, cleaned from above with the electronics covered; under the engine needs a lift. See engine bay cleaning and is engine bay cleaning safe.
Do you tip a detailer? Tipping is optional and never added to our bill. The usual range, and when people tip more: car detailing prices.
How do you choose a detailer? Ask for the scope in writing, whether the price can change at the curb, whether their insurance covers your car while it is in their care, what the guarantee promises and when you pay. A deposit by payment app before anyone shows up is the classic red flag: questions to ask a detailer before booking.
