Questions to Ask a Detailer Before Booking: Vetting, Scams, Damage and Guarantees

Ask seven things before booking a detailer: what the package covers; whether the price can change on arrival; which products go on your paint, leather and screens; where the wash water goes; whether their insurance covers your car in their care; what the guarantee promises; and how and when you pay. Get the answers in writing.

How to vet a detailer: training and reviews

Training. The industry's own certification comes from the International Detailing Association, at two levels: Certified Detailer (CD), passed on written exams, and Skills Validated (CD-SV), passed on a hands-on assessment (IDA). For coatings and film, the question is whether the installer is authorized by the maker, because some maker warranties depend on it: XPEL's coating warranty requires professional installation and an annual inspection (XPEL).

Reviews and Reddit. Read the bad reviews first and how the business answered them. The FTC's 2024 rule bans reviews "by someone who does not exist" or with no "actual experience" of the business (FTC). Reddit threads such as r/AutoDetailing are good on methods and products, but a recommendation can't show you a detailer's written terms.

Can you choose your detailer or see ratings? On a marketplace app you often rate an individual detailer from the app's network. With a detailing company you book the company, which sends a crew and answers for the job. Ask either one who answers for the job if something goes wrong.

The most common detailing scams

The pattern on Facebook and Instagram, documented in 2024: a new page offers a detail with no upfront payment, then in direct messages asks for a "refundable deposit" before the work, and disappears with it (Family Handyman). The same check works on a crew knocking on doors in your street.

Door-to-door crews. Before you hand over keys or money, get three things: a business name you can look up, the scope and the full price in writing, and payment after the work, by card. Until you have all three, the keys stay with you. If you have already paid and the work never happened: the FTC says to "report it to the payment app", then to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov (FTC), and the CFPB says to "contact your bank or the payment company right away" (CFPB). A credit card charge can also be disputed with the issuer, as in the damage steps below.

Red flags when choosing a car detailer

  • A page created in the last few months, with few photos and few or no reviews
  • Contact only by direct message, with no business name you can look up
  • A price far under every other quote, with no list of what it includes
  • Money first by Zelle, Venmo or Cash App: the FTC says "Sending money through a payment app is like sending cash — it's very hard to get it back" (FTC)
  • Pressure to decide today, or a guilt trip about supporting a small business
  • No answer, or a vague one, on what happens if something is damaged

What products do detailers use, and are they safe for your car?

Professional products are safe when each one is used on the surface it was made for. Damage comes from the wrong product in the wrong place:

  • Paint: a pH-neutral car shampoo, not dish soap or a degreaser left to dry in the sun.
  • Interior: Tesla warns that "solvents (including alcohol), alcohol-based gel products (such as hand sanitizer), bleach, citrus, naphtha, or silicone-based products or additives on interior components can cause damage" (Tesla).
  • Film and coatings: XPEL warns against a pressure washer "near the edges of the film" and says of its coating, "Never use aggressive products to polish the coating or to remove surface contamination" (XPEL).

A good detailer names the products. Ours are on each service page: Koch-Chemie Pol Star on fabric, GYEON LeatherCleaner on leather, Gtechniq C2 sealant on paint, XPEL FUSION PLUS for ceramic coating. Mobile crews bring their own products, tools, water and power.

How do detailers get cars so clean? With method more than chemistry: grit lifted before anything touches the paint, iron remover and clay for what a wash leaves behind, hot-water extraction for carpets, brushes and steam for vents and seams (car detailing vs car wash).

How do they protect the car while they work? Photos at arrival, a fresh microfiber for every panel, no dry wiping, screens cleaned with a soft cloth, and, before any polishing, paint readings with a thickness gauge.

Eco-friendly car detailing: what to ask

Do detailers use eco-friendly products? Many say so; ask what the claim means. Three questions sort it out:

  1. Where does the water go? In most cases, water in the gutter reaches rivers, lakes and the ocean through the storm drains (LA Regional Water Board). A biodegradable soap in the gutter is still runoff. Look for a capture mat or a tank, and the crew's own water.
  2. What does "biodegradable" mean on the label? Under the FTC's Green Guides, the claim needs evidence that the product will "completely break down and return to nature within a reasonably short period of time after customary disposal" (16 CFR 260.8). It is not a license to rinse it into the street.
  3. Is any product independently labeled? EPA's Safer Choice label means EPA reviewed every ingredient, including for "toxicity to aquatic life" (EPA).

Detailer damaged your car: how to proceed

  1. 01

Document it before the crew leaves

Photos and video of the damage in good light, with the date, and the crew's names.

  2. 02

    Compare with the arrival photos

Ask for the business's own condition photos. They settle whether the mark was there before.

  3. 03

Report it in writing, the same day

Text or email the business with photos, and ask how it will be handled.

  4. 04

    Get an independent repair estimate

A body shop's written estimate puts a number on the claim. Don't repair it before the business has seen it.

  5. 05

If they refuse: your card, your insurer, small claims

If you paid by credit card, a dispute covers services not "delivered as agreed" if the letter reaches the issuer "within 60 days after the first bill with the error" (FTC). Your own auto insurer may cover it and then pursue the business; ask. In California's small claims court, an individual can sue for up to 12,500 dollars, and no lawyer represents either side in court (California Courts), and the court wants you to ask for the money first (California Courts).

Satisfaction guarantees and rewash policies

A guarantee is worth what it says in writing. Look for three things: how long you have to report a problem, whether the fix is a return visit or a refund, and whether it covers part of the job, so an interior that falls short is redone without repeating the exterior.

A car wash's clean-car guarantee is a free rewash inside a set window, and the window varies. One Phoenix chain offers "a free exterior rewash" if the car "gets dirty (within terms) within 72 hours" (published terms); a Texas chain covers two of its washes: "If weather conditions dirty your vehicle again within 7 days, simply come back and we'll rewash it for FREE" (published terms). Both promise another wash, not a repair: damage is a separate claim (steps above). Terms differ by operator, so ask which washes qualify, how long the window is, and whether you need the receipt.

If only the interior or only the exterior falls short, report that part, with photos, inside the guarantee's window, and ask for that part to be redone.

Keep two promises apart. A maker's warranty on a coating or film is the maker's, on the maker's terms, and the installer registers it. A workmanship guarantee is the detailer's. Ours: not right? Tell us within 48 hours and we come back and fix it at no charge. How we work.

When you're ready to book

Our answers to the questions in the table are on the home page: the price for your car's size before you book, the list of what each package covers, the products we use, the no-runoff mat and our own water, photos at arrival and hand-over, insurance that covers your car while it is in our care, and the 48-hour guarantee. The card is charged after the work.

Questions

Can a detailer stop me from posting a bad review?

No. The FTC's rule bars a business from "using unfounded or groundless legal threats, physical threats, intimidation, or certain false public accusations to prevent or remove a negative consumer review" (FTC). Stick to facts and photos, and give the business the chance to fix it first.

What should I take out of the car before the detailer arrives?

Valuables, papers, garage remotes you'll need, and anything loose in the trunk and door pockets, so every surface can be reached. Child seats come out if the seats under them are being cleaned. The rest of the prep: is mobile detailing worth it.

Is booking through an app safer than hiring a detailer directly?

Neither is safer by default. What matters is who answers for the job: the app, the individual detailer or a company. Ask whose guarantee applies and who you call if something is wrong, and get the answers in writing before the visit.
