How to Clean a Car Interior and Get Rid of Odors: Stains, Leather, Pet Hair and Smoke
Cleaning a car interior means taking things out of the cabin, not covering them up: dirt, spills, hair and the residue behind a smell. Work dry before wet, use the method each material calls for, and treat a smell at its source, such as smoke residue in the headliner, a wet carpet pad or urine in the seat foam. A freshener only masks it.

Car interior cleaning FAQ
My car is dirty and smells. What should I tackle first?
Clean first, then judge the smell. Most smells sit in what a cleaning removes: trash, mats, crumbs, the cabin filter and the fabric. Once the car is vacuumed, wiped, extracted and dry, whatever is left points to its source: musty means water (mildew guide), stale smoke means residue in the headliner or foam (smoke guide), and a sweet smell from the vents means a mechanic.
Which car smells mean a mechanic, not a cleaner?
A sweet or fishy smell from the vents can mean the heater core is leaking coolant, which Consumer Reports says needs fixing right away (Consumer Reports). NFPA groups a smell of burning rubber or plastic with smoke and flames: "respond immediately", which in its car-fire steps means pull over as soon as it is safe, turn off the engine and get everyone out (NFPA). It also lists fluid leaks among the danger signs. Carbon monoxide has no smell, so if you suspect exhaust fumes inside, Nissan's owner's manual says to drive with all windows fully open and have the vehicle inspected immediately (Nissan).
Why does my car smell worse on hot days?
Heat drives smells out of surfaces. In a study of a new car, material surface temperature affected cabin VOC levels more than air temperature did (Zhang et al., PNAS Nexus, 2024), and CIRES says settled wildfire-smoke compounds off-gas more when it's warmer (CIRES). In an Arizona test, dashboards in sun-parked cars averaged 157°F after one hour (ASU and UC San Diego, 2018). A smell that returns on hot afternoons means the source is still in the car.

Four rules that hold for every surface and every smell
- Find the source. A smell is something physical: smoke residue, water in the carpet pad, a spill in the seat foam, a nest in the air intake. EPA's advice for indoor air applies to a cabin too: "The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air" (EPA). A scent sprayed over the source fades; the source stays.
- Dry before wet, top to bottom. Vacuum before any liquid touches a surface; Lexus's leather bulletin says to "remove loose dust or dirt prior to cleaning" (Lexus L-SB-0014-16). Two exceptions: mouse droppings, which CDC says never to vacuum or sweep because it puts virus-carrying droplets in the air (CDC), and wildfire ash, which takes a HEPA-filter vacuum and no blower (smoke odor guide).
- Product on the cloth, never a soaked seat. Consumer Reports: "Don't soak seats; damp cushions can foster mold and create a musty smell" (Consumer Reports). Tesla says not to spray its seats directly with any spray (Tesla). Dry anything wet within 24–48 hours, the window in which EPA says mold usually won't grow (EPA), and keep the front passenger seat, which often holds the airbag occupant sensor, low on moisture.
- Each material its own method, and the owner's manual wins. Lexus says vehicle leather "should ONLY be cleaned by hand with water and mild detergent", and that damage from unapproved cleaning methods is not eligible for replacement under warranty (Lexus L-SB-0014-16). Screens differ by maker: how to clean the steering wheel, dash and screens.

Short answers to the most-searched smell questions
How do I get weed smell out of my car?
The skunky note of cannabis comes from sulfur compounds that settle on the inside glass, the fabric, the headliner and the cabin air filter. Take out the source, air the car, vacuum, wipe the glass and hard surfaces and fit a new cabin filter; smell in the fabric takes shampoo and extraction. A spray only covers it. Full steps, and what California law says about cannabis in a car: weed smell in a car.
How do I get smoke smell out of my car?
Remove the residue, not the smell: ashtray and trash out, a new cabin filter, a vacuum, hard surfaces and glass wiped, then the seats and carpet extracted and the headliner cleaned gently by hand. Years of cigarette residue may never fully leave, which is why a smoker's car is the hardest case. Step by step: how to remove smoke odor from a car.
How do I get skunk smell out of my car?
After driving over or past a skunk, the spray sits on the tires and underside, and the fresh-air intake pulls it in. Wash the outside first, change the cabin filter, then treat hard surfaces with a freshly mixed peroxide solution, never on upholstery; tomato juice doesn't work. The recipe and its safety limits: how to get skunk smell out of a car.
How do I get mold out of car carpet?
Mold on the carpet means water got in, so find the leak first. Then remove the mold rather than just kill it, extract and dry the carpet, and check the pad underneath: EPA says moldy carpet may have to be thrown away (EPA). Protective gear and the full method: how to get mold out of car carpet.
How do I get rid of a musty smell in my car?
A musty smell means water is sitting somewhere, usually in the carpet pad from a door seal, a sunroof drain or the A/C condensate drain, or on the A/C evaporator. Find it and dry it; a freshener leaves the water where it is. How to trace each source: how to get mildew smell out of a car.
