How to clean leather car seats, and get stuff out of the seat holes, plus gum, urine and stains

To clean leather car seats, vacuum first, then wipe with a mild, neutral-pH leather cleaner put on a microfiber towel, never sprayed on the seat, lift the residue with a damp cloth and dry it. In perforated seats, vacuum the holes slowly with a soft brush, keep liquid from soaking through, and never dig in the holes with a pin.

How to clean leather car seats, step by step

  1. 01

Check what the seats are made of

The owner's manual names the material, and it decides the products. Real leather gets a leather cleaner and a conditioner; synthetic leather gets mild soap and water: Tesla wipes a spill on its seats with a microfiber moistened with "warm water and mild soap" (Tesla).

  2. 02

    Vacuum, then a water-only wipe

Lexus: "Remove loose dust or dirt prior to cleaning", then "Perform general surface cleaning with a microfiber cloth moistened with clean water" (Lexus L-SB-0014-16). Honda does the same with clear water, then buffs with a dry cloth, and points to the pleats and seams (Honda). Light soil often stops here.

  3. 03

Leather cleaner on the towel or brush, one panel at a time

Never on the seat: Lexus says to apply cleaners to microfiber towels "instead of directly to the seat". GYEON's directions for its LeatherCleaner are the same shape: put it on a soft leather brush or pad, work it in gently, and wipe the residue with a clean microfiber, repeating on heavily soiled areas (GYEON). Use a brush only if your carmaker allows one (more below).

  4. 04

Lift the residue and dry it

"Wipe off residues with a clean, wet microfiber cloth", then finish with a dry one (Lexus). Honda: wipe a leather cleaner off quickly with a dry cloth and never leave a cloth soaked with it on any part of the interior, since "if left for a long time, some leather cleaners may cause discoloration or cracking of interior trim or fabric" (Honda).

  5. 05

    Condition real leather

GM: "After cleaning the leather, it is important to treat the surface with the restorer" (GM). A thin coat of a water-based, low-gloss conditioner on the towel, buffed off; how often: conditioning leather seats.

What to use on leather seats, and what to keep off

Common leather-seat advice, checked against the carmakers' own instructions:

Common leather-seat advice, checked against carmaker instructions
Product or toolWhat the carmakers sayVerdict
Mild, neutral-pH leather cleanerGM: "Use only mild, Neutral-pH cleaners" (GM); Lexus: water and mild detergent, by handUse, on the towel
Dish soapConsumer Reports suggests "a small amount of dish soap and water" (Consumer Reports); GM says avoid "dishwashing soaps with degreasers"Only a plain one, very diluted; your manual decides
Rubbing alcoholGM rules out organic solvents "such as naptha, alcohol"; Tesla lists alcohol among substances to avoid; Hyundai: high-alcohol solutions may make the color "fade or the surface may get stripped off"Keep off
Silicone or wax dressingsGM: they raise gloss "in a non-uniform manner" and can cause reflections in the windshieldKeep off
Bleach, hydrogen peroxideConsumer Reports: never on leather or vinyl; Tesla lists bleach to avoidKeep off
Steam or a carpet extractorLexus: vehicle leather "should ONLY be cleaned by hand with water and mild detergent"; GM's extractor is for fabric and carpetKeep off leather
Stiff brush, pin, toothpickGM: "Never use a STIFF brush"; Lexus: no gouging or scratchingKeep off

Lexus adds that "damage caused by unapproved cleaning methods are NOT eligible for replacement under warranty" (Lexus L-SB-0014-16). For the rest of the kit (vacuums, towels, brushes), see what you need to detail a car interior.

How to get crumbs and grime out of perforated leather seats

  1. 01

    Vacuum before anything wet

GM: "Before any cleaning product is used, vacuum to remove all loose dirt" (GM 06-00-89-029T). Use a soft brush attachment and slow, overlapping passes across the perforated panel, then along the seams; a strip of painter's tape on a bare nozzle keeps it from marking the leather. Lexus also says to "gently vacuum the surface" (Lexus L-SB-0014-16).

  2. 02

    Loosen what the vacuum leaves

Carmakers disagree on brushes. GM allows a soft bristle brush "to safely work the cleaner into the leather grain" and says "Never use a STIFF brush"; Lexus says hand cleaning only, no brushes, and "Do NOT: … Gouge, scratch". So a soft brush only where your manual allows it, and no pin, toothpick or tweezers in the holes: that is the gouging Lexus rules out.

  3. 03

Put the cleaner on the towel

Lexus: "Apply cleaners to microfiber towels instead of directly to the seat." Tesla: "Do not spray the seat directly with any spray" (Tesla). Use a mild, neutral-pH leather cleaner and work one panel at a time.

  4. 04

Wipe off, keep it shallow, dry it

Lift the residue with a clean microfiber, damp but not wet, and finish with a dry one; Hyundai warns that wiping leather with a wet cloth "may cause the surface to crack" (Hyundai). Porsche's procedure for perforated, ventilated seats: make sure liquid "does not soak right through to the back of the perforated leather", keep seat heating and ventilation off and dry the seat away from direct sunlight (Porsche TI 7413).

  5. 05

    Condition, lightly

On real leather, a water-based conditioner on a towel, worked in and buffed off so nothing sits in the holes. Skip it on synthetic leather (see below).

Dark spots around the holes after cleaning or rain

A ring of darker leather around the perforations after a wipe-down, a spill or an open window in the rain is moisture, not damage. Porsche's service note says "Perforated leather becomes darker following contact with moisture" and that these spots "are not damaged areas on the seat cover" (Porsche TI 7413).

Its fix is not more cleaner: "Do not remove water stains or damp spots using leather cleaner or care products." Wipe the whole seat surface and backrest with distilled water on a clean, fine-pore sponge, without soaking through, let it dry completely at room temperature out of the sun with heating and ventilation off, then rub it down with a dry, lint-free cloth.

How to get gum off a leather car seat

  1. 01

    Freeze it

Hyundai's manual: "Harden the gum with ice and remove it gradually" (Hyundai). Keep the ice in a sealed plastic bag so meltwater stays off the leather and out of the holes.

  2. 02

    Lift it from the edges

Once the gum is brittle, flex the leather gently and lift it with a fingernail or a dull plastic edge, working inward. Re-freeze as it softens. On a perforated panel, do not push gum into the holes; vacuum the fragments.

  3. 03

Clean the residue with leather cleaner

Leather cleaner on a microfiber towel, then a damp wipe. Not alcohol, peanut butter, oils or solvents: GM and Tesla rule out solvents, and Hyundai treats oil as a stain of its own.

Gum on cloth seats or carpet takes a different method: how to get gum out of car upholstery.

How to get urine out of leather car seats

Speed matters more than the product: on a perforated seat, urine runs through the holes toward the cushion.

  1. Blot at once with paper towels, pressing, not rubbing (Humane World for Animals).
  2. Wipe with a damp microfiber, then mild leather cleaner on a fresh towel, then a damp wipe and a dry one. Lexus spot-cleans stains with a cloth "soaked in baby soap solution" and moderate hand pressure.
  3. No ammonia, no vinegar, no steam. Humane World for Animals warns against ammonia and vinegar, and says steam's heat sets the stain and the odor.
  4. Dry it completely. On the front passenger seat this matters twice: Hyundai says to make sure the seat "has been completely dried before driving" after a large spill, since its occupant sensor can trigger the airbag warning light (Hyundai).

If the smell is still there once the leather is dry, the urine went through the holes or seams into the cushion, and wiping the surface will not reach it. Enzyme cleaners and extraction for the foam: how to get urine smell out of a car seat.

Can you remove stains from leather seats?

Leather seat stains: the carmaker's method and how likely it is to work
StainMethodUsually
Coffee, soda, juiceHyundai: "a small amount of neutral detergent", wiped "until it does not smear"Lifts if fresh
Sunscreen, makeup, lotionHyundai: cleansing cream, then a damp and a dry clothOften; Tesla says such dyes and oils "cannot always be safely cleaned off"
Oil, food greaseHyundai: an absorbent cloth, then a stain remover made for natural leatherOften lifts; may shadow
Blue jeans on light leatherGM: dye transfer "will happen any time a natural fiber like cotton … comes into contact with leather", faster on light colorsFresh transfer lifts; set transfer may not
Old stains in a hot carGM: the interior "can experience extreme heat, which can cause stains to set quickly"May leave a mark
Water rings around holesPorsche: distilled water over the whole panel, no cleanerEvens out

Lexus lists "Let stains remain untreated" among its don'ts, and says cracking, peeling and dye transfer happen in the leather's protective top coat (Lexus L-SB-0014-16); scrubbing harder wears that coat away. Stains on cloth seats: car upholstery stains.

Conditioning leather seats after cleaning, and how often

Condition after each cleaning rather than on a calendar. GM: "After cleaning the leather, it is important to treat the surface with the restorer", and its own is water-based and "adds luster without adding gloss" (GM). Lexus says leather needs "periodic maintenance and cleaning comparable to the exterior of the vehicle. Usage will dictate frequency and schedule", and to clean "when soiling is first noticed" (Lexus). A daily driver with light leather gets cleaned and conditioned more often than a weekend car; none of the carmakers above gives a fixed number of months.

What to use: a water-based, low-gloss conditioner on the towel, a thin coat, buffed off. Factory leather is meant to look low-sheen, not shiny.

Synthetic leather and vinyl need cleaning, not feeding. Tesla says conditioners and protectants are not recommended on its seats (Tesla); GM's restorer is labeled safe for vinyl and leather alike. Not sure what your seats are? The owner's manual names the material.

Is leather protection an upsell or a scam?

Neither by default: it depends on the seats. A leather coating does something measurable on the right leather. GYEON, for one, says its LeatherShield EVO "forms an invisible barrier that reduces wear, color transfer, and contamination" for up to 18 months, on "modern coated automotive leather", and is "not suitable for aniline or open pore leather" (GYEON).

  • Worth it: light coated leather, dark denim, kids, a car used every day.
  • Little point: synthetic leather whose maker says not to use protectants (Tesla); aniline leather; a seat that is already cracked, because a coating does not rebuild the top coat.
  • Ask first: which product, whether it suits your leather type, and what it adds to a normal cleaning.

The same question for cloth seats: is fabric protection for car seats worth it.

Leather protection at a California dealer, from October 1, 2026
California law

California's CARS Act (SB 766, Civil Code 1784.20 and on) is operative from October 1, 2026 (1784.28). Two rules apply to an interior protection package sold with a car:

  • Optional, in writing. When a dealer writes to you about an add-on, it must disclose "at least once that the add-on is not required and the consumer can purchase or lease the vehicle without the add-on" (1784.41(b)).
  • No benefit, no charge. "A dealer may not charge for an add-on product or service if the vehicle purchaser or lessee would not benefit from the add-on product or service" (1784.42(a)). The law's listed examples include oil changes on an electric car.

Whether a given leather package benefits you is a question of fact; the decision rule above is a starting point. Not legal advice.

Professional help

When to call a pro

Call a pro when grime is packed into perforated or ventilated seats, when jeans dye or makeup has set into light leather, or when you are not sure what the leather is. A leather seat cleaning is done by hand with the cleaner on the towel, never steam, perforations vacuumed first and cleaned hole by hole in the deep clean, and the limits named before anyone starts. Urine in the foam takes extraction, and cracks, tears and color loss go to a leather repair specialist. Prices by car size: car detailing prices.

Leather seat care FAQ

Can you shampoo leather seats?

Not with a carpet shampoo or extractor. Lexus says vehicle leather "should ONLY be cleaned by hand with water and mild detergent", and GM's extractor procedure is for fabric and carpet. Soaking also pushes water through perforations into the cushion. Cloth seats are the ones that get shampooed and extracted.

Can cracked leather seats be restored?

Cleaning and conditioning won't close a crack. Lexus says cracking and peeling happen in the protective coating of the leather's top coat, and a conditioner does not rebuild a coating. Cracks, peeling and worn bolsters are refinishing or repair work for a leather repair specialist; a cleaner can only stop dirt from wearing the coat faster.

Is cleaning vinyl or synthetic leather seats different from real leather?

The cleaning is the same: mild soap and water on a cloth, no solvents, no soaking. The difference is afterwards. Real leather gets a water-based conditioner; synthetic leather usually doesn't need one, and Tesla says conditioners and protectants are not recommended on its seats. GM's leather restorer is labeled safe for vinyl too.

When can I sit on the seats or switch the seat ventilation back on?

Once the leather is completely dry, which on a barely damp wipe is soon. Porsche's procedure for perforated seats keeps heating and ventilation off until the cover is fully dry, and Hyundai says a front passenger seat must be completely dried before driving after a large spill.
