How to Remove Smoke Odor From a Car: Cigarette, Weed and Wildfire Smoke

To remove smoke odor from a car, remove the residue, not just the smell: empty the ashtray and trash, replace the cabin air filter, vacuum, clean hard surfaces and the inside glass, shampoo seats and carpet, clean the headliner gently and air the car out. Fresheners only cover it; years of cigarette residue may never fully leave.

Why smoke smell stays in a car

Smoke leaves a residue on every surface, in the dust and deep in the fabric, seat foam, headliner and cabin air filter, and a small closed cabin concentrates it. This is thirdhand smoke. Nicotine sorbs to surfaces quickly and stays there (Sleiman et al., 2010). In a study of used cars for sale, smokers who had banned smoking in their cars had less nicotine in the air than smokers who hadn't, but similar levels in the dust and on surfaces (Matt et al., 2008). Airing a car out clears the air; it leaves the residue where it is.

How to get smoke smell out of a car, step by step

  1. 01

    Remove every source

Empty the ashtray; take out butts, lighters and trash from under the seats, the door pockets and the trunk; take the mats out.

  2. 02

    Replace the cabin air filter

EPA advises replacing it after a high or extended smoke event and notes replacement filters "that have activated carbon for odor control" (EPA, 2026). The owner's manual shows where it sits and how to change it.

  3. 03

    Vacuum top to bottom

Seats, seams, carpet and trunk. If ash got in, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and no blower or compressed air (wildfire section below).

  4. 04

Clean hard surfaces and the inside glass

Dash, console, door panels, steering wheel and vent louvers, then the glass, where the residue settles too. Use a cleaner made for each material; wipe screens with a display cloth and your manual's method (Tesla: no glass cleaner or alcohol).

  5. 05

    Shampoo and extract the fabric

An extractor rinses seats, carpet and mats and pulls the dirty water back out; or have it done as a mobile car shampoo. Let everything dry fully with the windows cracked, or the damp pad trades smoke for a mildew smell. Leather is cleaned, never soaked (car detailing for leather seats).

  6. 06

    Clean the headliner by hand

Put a low-moisture foam on a cloth, not on the roof, and blot. Never soak it: the fabric is fixed to a board, and once a headliner sags, cleaning can't reattach it; an auto upholstery shop re-covers it.

  7. 07

    Flush the vents

With the new filter in, run the fan on high on fresh air, not recirculate, with the doors open for several minutes.

  8. 08

    Air out, then absorb

Leave the windows down in the shade. Overnight, an open box of baking soda or a bag of activated charcoal in the closed car can take some odor out of the air. It does not reach residue in the foam or the headliner.

Weed smell in a car: why it's there and how to get it out

Why does my car smell like weed?

The skunky note of cannabis comes mainly from a family of sulfur compounds; the primary odorant is 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol (Oswald et al., 2021). Skunk spray's main components also include thiols, related sulfur compounds (Wood, 1990). So a weed smell usually means someone smoked or vaped in the car (a previous owner included), cannabis was carried in it, or a skunk sprayed nearby and the fresh-air intake pulled the smell in. For skunk, see mildew, skunk and other car smells.

Does weed smell go away?

From the air, yes, with airing. From the fabric and glass, it stays until cleaned off with the steps above. No study has timed weed smell in a car. THC does land on surfaces (Sempio et al., 2019), and lab work on THC suggests cannabis residue plays a smaller part than nicotine does in tobacco residue (Wylie and Abbatt, 2020).

How to get weed smell out of a car fast

Sources out, windows down, vacuum, wipe the glass and hard surfaces, new cabin filter. A spray covers the rest for a while; it does not remove it.

In California, state law bars smoking or ingesting cannabis while driving or while riding as a passenger, and an open container or package of cannabis in the passenger area (HSC 11362.3).

Wildfire smoke in the car: ash first, then the smell

Wildfire smoke smell comes from volatile organic compounds that settle on surfaces and "will likely keep off-gassing for a long time (weeks to months)", more when it's warmer and less when it's cooler (CIRES, 2025). In Los Angeles that means the smell comes back on hot afternoons: in an Arizona test on 100°F-plus days, cars parked in the sun averaged 116°F cabin air and 157°F dashboards after one hour (ASU and UC San Diego, 2018).

Ash is the bigger concern: from burned homes and buildings it can contain metals such as lead, cadmium, nickel and arsenic, asbestos from older buildings, and caustic materials (OEHHA). Ash on the paint is a separate question: see does wildfire ash damage car paint.

After a smoke or ash day

  • Before you get in after cleaning up ash, wash your hands and change into clean clothes; bag ash-covered clothing and put it in the trunk, out of the cabin (OEHHA).
  • Ash inside: vacuum with a HEPA filter, then wipe surfaces with a damp cloth (LA County Public Health, updated March 2025).
  • No shop vacuum, leaf blower or compressed air: common vacuums blow fine particles out the exhaust instead of catching them (OEHHA).
  • Replace the cabin filter after a heavy or long smoke event; one with activated carbon helps with odor (EPA, 2026).
  • Seat covers and blankets: wash them, and keep them out of the dryer until the smoke smell is gone, since heat "can set the smell permanently" (LA County Public Health).
  • Then the fabric: steps 5 and 6 above.
  • Driving in smoke: windows closed and the air conditioning on recirculate (EPA). On longer drives, briefly open the outside air when smoke is lighter, since carbon dioxide builds up on recirculate (EPA, 2026).

How long does smoke smell last in a car?

It depends on how much was smoked, for how long, and whether the residue comes out. No one has published a clock for this, so here is what the studies measured instead.

How long smoke smell lasts, and what the research shows
SituationWhat to expectWhat the research shows
One cigarette or jointA faint smell that airing and a wipe-down usually handleNicotine sorbs to surfaces quickly (Sleiman et al., 2010); no study times a single session in a car
A smoker's car, years of useThe smell can stay indefinitely without a deep clean, and may not fully leave even with oneIn 127 used cars, owners' cleaning and airing did not lower nicotine contamination (Fortmann et al., 2010)
A smoker's home, for comparisonResidue outlasts cleaning and an empty periodStill present after homes stood vacant for 2 months and were cleaned for new residents (Matt et al., 2011)
Wildfire smokeWeeks to months of off-gassing, stronger on hot daysCIRES, 2025
WeedNo measured durationA lab study of THC, not of the smell, not a car study (Wylie and Abbatt, 2020)

If the smell is back within days of a full clean, it is still in the headliner, the seat foam or the ventilation system.

Is smoke smell in a car dangerous?

Tobacco residue. Nicotine left on surfaces reacts with nitrous acid in indoor air to form tobacco-specific nitrosamines, which are carcinogens. Researchers measured "substantial levels" of them on surfaces inside a smoker's vehicle and flagged exposure through the skin, dust and ingestion (Sleiman et al., 2010). California law addresses children directly: smoking a tobacco product in a car with a minor in it, moving or parked, is an infraction (HSC 118948), and "smoking" includes electronic smoking devices such as vapes (B&P 22950.5).

Weed residue. THC has been measured on surfaces in a room where cannabis was vaped (Sempio et al., 2019); what that residue does to health has not been established.

Wildfire smoke. The smell is VOCs off-gassing; the ash, with the metals and asbestos it can carry, is the bigger hazard (above).

Odor eliminators and home remedies: what each one does

OptionWhat it doesThe limit
Air fresheners and scented spraysCover the smell with another oneNo scent cancels smoke; when it fades, the smell is back
Baking soda, activated charcoal, coffee groundsCan take some odor out of the air in a closed carDon't reach residue in the foam, the headliner or the dust
White vinegar and waterA mild cleaner for glass and hard plastics; its own smell fades as it driesNo study we found shows it removes smoke residue from fabric
Activated-carbon cabin filterFilters odor from the air coming through the vents (EPA, 2026)Doesn't clean the surfaces
Enzyme cleanersBreak down organic spills such as urine, vomit and milkMade for those spills, not for smoke residue
Professional fog treatmentA fine mist that Koch-Chemie says reaches the vents and A/C evaporator (KC-Refresher)Works after cleaning, not instead of it
Ozone (professional only)Oxidizes odor in a closed, empty carEPA: at levels within public-health standards, ozone "is not effective at removing many odor-causing chemicals", and it can damage rubber and fabrics (EPA)

What do car dealers use to get rid of smoke smell?

The same two steps: a deep clean with extraction, then a treatment in the empty car, which can be ozone. California's air-cleaner rules allow ozone (17 CCR 94803) for "odor control in the motor vehicle reconditioning and detailing industry, carried out by trained personnel, and provided no people are physically present" (17 CCR 94801). It is not a do-it-yourself tool: see can ozone get rid of cigarette odor in a car.

Professional help

When to call a pro

Call a pro when the smell is back within days of a full clean, the car was smoked in for years, the vents still smell with a new filter, or ash got inside after a fire. Our smoke odor removal is a deep interior with hot-water extraction, the headliner and vents, then the Koch-Chemie KC-Refresher fog; ozone only as a last step for heavy smoke, in a closed, empty car that is aired before hand-back. We aim for a large reduction in smell; a smoke-free car is not guaranteed. Prices are on car detailing cost in Los Angeles.

Questions

Will smoking in my car once make it smell?

Some, yes. Nicotine sorbs to surfaces quickly (Sleiman et al., 2010), so even one session leaves residue. Airing the car and cleaning the glass and hard surfaces usually handle a single session; repeated smoking builds residue into the dust and fabric (Matt et al., 2008), which takes the full clean.

How do I get smoke smell out of my car overnight?

Do steps 1 to 4 in the evening, leave an open box of baking soda or a bag of activated charcoal in the closed car overnight, and air it out in the morning. That cuts the smell in the air. Smoke in the fabric needs extraction and drying time, which doesn't fit in one night.

Does vinegar get rid of smoke smell in a car?

Diluted white vinegar works as a mild cleaner on glass and hard plastics, and its own smell fades as it dries. It does not reach smoke in the seat foam or the headliner, and we found no study showing it does more than that.

Should I buy a used car that smells like smoke?

Expect residue. Researchers found nicotine in the dust and on the surfaces of smokers' used cars even when the seller had banned smoking in them (Matt et al., 2008), and suggested buyers could ask for a discount on a car that has been smoked in (Fortmann et al., 2010). Budget for a deep interior clean and a new cabin filter.

Can an air freshener get rid of cigarette smell?

No. A scented freshener covers the smell for a while, and when the scent fades the smoke is back, because the residue is still there. The sprays that help are the cleaners you use on each surface in the steps above.
