Can Ozone Get Rid of Cigarette Odor in a Car? Ozone vs Chlorine Dioxide, Timing and Safety
Partly. Ozone breaks down smoke residue it reaches: in a Berkeley Lab test, one hour of ozone cleared fresh nicotine from fabric. But that test used day-old residue, not years of it; ozone also makes formaldehyde and fine particles as it works, and it is safe only in an empty car aired afterward. Clean the source first.

What ozone does to cigarette smoke, and what it doesn't
Ozone is "a molecule composed of three atoms of oxygen", and the third atom "can detach from the ozone molecule, and re-attach to molecules of other substances, thereby altering their chemical composition" (EPA). A generator fills the closed car with the gas, so it reaches vents and fabric a cloth can't.
The most direct test on cigarette residue comes from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Six cigarettes were smoked in an 18 m³ room-sized chamber, and about a day later an ozone generator ran for one hour. Fabric-bound nicotine "was depleted", and the PAHs on the fabric fell "by an order of magnitude", to pre-smoking levels (Tang et al., 2020).
The same study shows the limits:
- Byproducts. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone in the air were higher right after ozonation, and ultrafine particles peaked after the generator stopped and "remained at higher-than background levels for several hours" (Tang et al., 2020).
- Fresh residue, not a smoker's car. The test treated day-old residue in a chamber. The Thirdhand Smoke Resource Center says that once residue is embedded in a car it is "virtually impossible to remove" (TSRC).
- Safe levels don't work. At concentrations within public-health standards, ozone "is not effective at removing many odor-causing chemicals" and "does not remove particles" (EPA). Ozone strong enough to work is ozone nobody should breathe.
So ozone can finish a smoke job; it cannot replace the cleaning. The residue comes out by hand first: how to remove smoke odor from a car.
Ozone, chlorine dioxide and fog treatments compared
| Treatment | How it works | How long it runs | Who can be in the car | Before anyone gets back in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ozone generator | Ozone gas oxidizes the residue it reaches | No standard time; one hour in the Berkeley Lab test (Tang et al.) | Nobody: California allows detailing use only "by trained personnel, and provided no people are physically present" (17 CCR 94801) | Ventilated "for at least one hour", per the manual text California requires (17 CCR 94803) |
| Chlorine dioxide pouch ("odor bomb") | A pouch releases chlorine dioxide, also an oxidizing gas | "At least 4 to 6 hours", not over 24, on one EPA-registered car label (NosGUARD SG) | "People and pets must not be in the area" while it is active (label) | "Ventilate for one (1) hour before re-entry" (label) |
| Hot-mist fog (Koch-Chemie KC-Refresher) | A fine mist through the cabin, vents and A/C evaporator; no ozone (Koch-Chemie) | About 20 minutes | Run in the closed, empty car | "The vehicle can be used shortly after application", says the maker |
The label on the package is the rule: using a registered pesticide "in a manner inconsistent with its labeling" violates federal law, as the chlorine dioxide label says.
How professional car odor removal works
- 01
Find and remove the source
Smoke residue in the headliner and foam, urine in the carpet pad, a spill under a seat, water from a leak. Vacuum, extraction, the headliner by hand, enzymes on urine, vomit and milk. A musty smell means water: how to get mildew smell out of a car.
- 02
Treat the air and the vents
A fog through the cabin and A/C, with the car closed and empty.
- 03
Ozone only if heavy smoke is left
Last, in the empty car, then aired before anyone gets in.
Does interior detailing eliminate odors?
Most of them, because most smells sit in what a detail removes: trash, spills, hair and residue in the fabric. A smell that survives a full interior clean has a source the clean didn't reach: residue in the headliner or seat foam, a wet carpet pad, urine deep in the foam, or the A/C evaporator. Find which (smoke, mildew, pets) before paying for a stronger treatment: fog or ozone over a wet pad leaves the water, and the smell. Detail vs car-wash interior: what interior detailing is.
How long car odor removal takes, and how long it lasts
| Part of the job | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Deep interior with extraction, sedan | About three to four hours, longer with smoke; fabric dry enough to sit on within a few hours | Interior detailing FAQ |
| Hot-mist fog | About 20 minutes | Koch-Chemie |
| Chlorine dioxide pouch | 4 to 6 hours or more, then one hour of airing | EPA-registered label |
| Ozone | No standard run; at least one hour of airing; in the Berkeley Lab test, particles stayed above background for several hours | 17 CCR 94803; Tang et al. |
How long it stays fresh depends on whether the source left the car; no one has published a clock for car odor treatments. Residue left in the foam or headliner keeps releasing smell, more on hot days (why heat brings smells back), and another round of gas won't change that. After years of smoking, a large reduction is a realistic goal; no treatment above has been shown to make the car smoke-free.
Is ozone or chlorine dioxide safe for kids and pets?
Not while it runs, and not until the car is aired.
- Ozone. "Relatively low amounts can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath and throat irritation", and ozone may worsen asthma (EPA). Children are at greatest risk "because their lungs are still developing", and they are more likely than adults to have asthma (EPA). For high-ozone treatment, EPA says conditions must be controlled "to insure that no person or pet becomes exposed" (EPA).
- Chlorine dioxide. Breathing it "may cause nose, throat, and lung irritation" (ATSDR). One EPA-registered car pouch carries its warning under "Hazardous to humans and domestic animals", keeps people and pets out during treatment, requires an hour of ventilation and says to store it where children can't reach it (label).
- How strong it gets. OSHA's eight-hour workplace limit is 0.1 ppm for both gases (ozone, chlorine dioxide); a treatment goes far above that on purpose, and the pouch label warns of "DANGEROUS LEVELS" once activated.
No source we found sets a separate airing time for children or pets; the hour in California's rule and on the label is a minimum. EPA also warns that a "lack of odor does not guarantee that levels are safe" (EPA).
Before a child or pet rides again
- Ask what was used, and when it stopped: ozone, chlorine dioxide, a fog, or cleaning only.
- At least an hour of airing, doors open, after ozone or chlorine dioxide; more if any sharp smell is left.
- No sharp smell left. Ozone has "a very pungent odor" and chlorine dioxide one "similar to chlorine and nitric acid" (OSHA, OSHA). If you can smell either, keep airing.
- Fan on fresh air, not recirculate, windows cracked, for the first drive.
- Fabric dry before a child seat or pet bed goes back in; a child seat itself is cleaned only as its maker allows (baby car seat cleaning).
- A new cabin air filter if smoke or mold was the problem; the owner's manual shows where it sits.
How to remove the ozone smell from a car
The sharp smell after an ozone treatment is partly ozone and partly what ozone made. In the Berkeley Lab test, carbonyls such as formaldehyde were higher right after treatment, and ultrafine particles stayed above background levels for several hours (Tang et al., 2020). The researchers' advice: "wait a few hours after the generator has run and allow the space to be ventilated before going back inside" (Berkeley Lab).
- Open every door and the trunk, in the shade, for at least an hour.
- Run the fan on high on fresh air, not recirculate, so the ducts are flushed too.
- Don't cover it with a freshener (below).
- Don't run the generator again to fix a lingering smell. Ozone can "damage materials such as rubber, electrical wire coatings and fabrics", and with many chemicals it forms "harmful or irritating by-products" (EPA). A smell that stays for days is the original residue, not a lack of ozone.
Do detailing chemicals leave a smell?
Some do, by design: many interior cleaners, dressings and fresheners carry a fragrance, so "fresh" is often a scent, not the absence of one. Twelve car air fresheners tested together emitted 546 VOC occurrences, 30 of them potentially hazardous; "natural" products emitted hazardous compounds no less than regular ones, and fewer than 2% of the compounds were disclosed on any label or safety data sheet (Steinemann et al., 2020).
California lets you check. The Cleaning Product Right to Know Act covers "air care" products and "automotive" products, including those for "the exterior or interior surfaces of motor vehicles" (HSC 108952). Their labels must list the intentionally added ingredients, or the listed ones plus fragrance allergens at 0.01% or more with the maker's website for the rest (HSC 108954). Ask which products go on the seats, then look them up.
Is interior detailing safe for kids and pets? Cleaning is the gentler half of odor work: products used as labeled, extracted out, and the fabric left to dry. Ask for unscented products if a rider is sensitive to fragrance, keep children and pets out of the car until it is dry, and handle any gas treatment by the checklist above.
Professional help
When to call a pro
Call a pro when a smell survives your own clean, the car was smoked in for years, or you'd rather not handle a gas treatment yourself. Our car odor removal cleans and extracts the source first, with enzymes on urine, vomit and milk, then fogs the cabin and A/C with Koch-Chemie KC-Refresher: about 20 minutes, no ozone. Ozone is a last step for heavy smoke only, in the closed, empty car, aired before hand-back. We aim for a large reduction in smell; a smoke-free car is not guaranteed. Questions
Does ozone damage a car's interior?
It can. EPA notes that ozone can "damage materials such as rubber, electrical wire coatings and fabrics" (EPA). Long or repeated runs expose those materials more, which is one reason ozone belongs at the end of a cleaning job, run briefly, rather than in place of it.
Will ozone kill mold in a car?
Not in a way that fixes it. EPA says ozone would have to be 5 to 10 times higher than public-health standards allow to decontaminate air of biological contaminants (EPA), and "the key to mold control is moisture control" (EPA). Mold returns until the wet carpet pad or the leak is dried and fixed: how to get mildew smell out of a car.
Can I buy an ozone generator and use it on my car myself?
California treats ozone generators for car odor as industrial equipment. A device sold under that exemption must carry the advisory "For industrial use only. Use only in unoccupied spaces. Health hazard: emits ozone." (17 CCR 94803), and the detailing use is defined as one "carried out by trained personnel" with nobody inside (17 CCR 94801). A thorough clean, a new cabin filter and airing do most of the work without that risk.
The used car I bought was ozone-treated. Is the smoke gone?
Not necessarily. The ozone study that cleared nicotine from fabric treated day-old residue, not years of it (Tang et al., 2020), and the Thirdhand Smoke Resource Center tells used-car buyers to "ask about smoking by previous owners" (TSRC). If the smell comes back on a hot day, the residue is still in the headliner, the foam or the vents: how to remove smoke odor from a car.
