How to get mildew smell out of a car, and skunk, urine and other smells

To get a mildew smell out of a car, find the water first: a wet carpet pad from a door seal, the sunroof drains or the A/C condensate drain. Dry it within 24 to 48 hours, as EPA advises, then clean and extract the carpet. A moldy pad may need replacing; a freshener only covers the smell.

How to get mildew and musty smell out of a car

A musty, moldy or "wet" smell means water is sitting somewhere, usually in the carpet pad where you cannot see it. "The key to mold control is moisture control" (EPA): a spray that leaves the water in place cannot fix it.

  1. 01

    Find the wet area

Take out the mats and press a dry towel into the carpet, front and back.

  2. 02

    Pull the water out

A wet/dry vacuum draws out far more than towels.

  3. 03

    Dry it fast

Doors open in the sun, a fan into the footwell, the heater on. Dried within 24 to 48 hours, "in most cases mold will not grow" (EPA).

  4. 04

    Clean and extract

Use a carpet cleaner and rinse it out with an extractor rather than soaking the carpet again.

  5. 05

Smell the pad, not just the carpet

Lift the carpet edge at the sill. Moldy carpet "may have to be thrown away" (EPA); in a car, that means a new pad or carpet section.

The A/C smells musty when it starts

Water on the evaporator behind the dash grows "bacteria and mold" if it sits. Turn the A/C off and "let the fans run for a few minutes" before you switch off the car, and replace the cabin air filter (Consumer Reports). If it keeps coming back, have the drain checked. A MINI bulletin traces "a foul smell (musty, rotten, and vinegary) when the A/C is first turned on" to a drain hose not draining; the fix was to restore drainage and clean the evaporator (MINI SI M64 01 17).

Visible mold or a flooded car is past a DIY smell job: the leak or flood damage needs a mechanic or body shop first.

Which method works on which smell

Consumer Reports' rule for a car interior is no bleach and no hydrogen peroxide, "because they are likely to damage your car's upholstery" (Consumer Reports). The two exceptions below, a freshly mixed peroxide solution for skunk and CDC's bleach solution for mouse mess and vomit, are narrow: hard plastic and rubber mats only, never upholstery, carpet, leather, Alcantara or screens.

How to get skunk smell out of a car

Six of the seven main ingredients in skunk spray are sulfur-containing thiols (Nebraska Extension). The spray also carries thioacetates, which "slowly get hydrolysed by water, releasing the nauseating thiols" (University of Bristol): that is why the car smells again on a damp morning. After running over one, the spray sits on the tires and underside.

  1. 01

    Wash the outside first

Tires, wheel wells and underside, with car shampoo and a hose or a self-serve wash bay.

  2. 02

Air the cabin and change the cabin filter

If the smell comes through the vents, the old filter is holding it.

  3. 03

Treat hard surfaces and rubber mats

Mix 1 quart of fresh 3% hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup of baking soda and 1–2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap in an open container, use it at once, then rinse with water (Nebraska Extension). Never store or cap it: it "may cause a closed container to explode".

  4. 04

    Keep it off fabric

Nebraska warns it "may discolor the fabric". Keep it off seats, carpet, leather, Alcantara and screens; fabric that smells gets shampoo and extraction.

How long does skunk smell last on a car?

Left alone, "skunk odor typically declines in intensity over several weeks", and it and "may reactivate during periods of high humidity" (Nebraska Extension). Tomato juice is "ineffective"; wash the source off instead.

Why does my car smell like skunk?

  • You drove over or past a skunk. Wash the outside, then follow the steps above.
  • Cannabis smoke. Researchers found 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol, a sulfur thiol, most abundant in the most pungent strains (ACS Omega, 2021). See how to remove smoke odor from a car.
  • A musty, vinegary blast when the A/C starts. The condensate drain: see the mildew section.
  • A sulfur or burning smell from under the hood or the exhaust. Not a cleaning problem: see a mechanic.

How to get urine smell out of a car seat

Urine soaks into the seat foam, so a clean-looking seat can still smell. Never steam it: "The heat will permanently set the stain and the odor by bonding the protein into any man-made fibers" (Humane World for Animals).

  1. 01

    Blot, don't scrub

Soak up what you can with paper towels, rinse with clean, cool water and blot again (Humane World for Animals).

  2. 02

    Use an enzyme cleaner

Per the label, enough to reach as deep as the urine went. Skip ammonia and vinegar.

  3. 03

    Extract and dry fully

Blot or extract, then dry with the windows open or the A/C running.

The front passenger seat often holds an airbag occupant sensor; check your manual. Hyundai says the seat must be "completely dried before driving" or "the airbag warning light may illuminate or malfunction" (Hyundai).

On leather, wipe it up fast and follow leather car seat cleaning. If urine has reached the foam, a mobile car shampoo with extraction gets further than any spray.

Vomit in the car: cleanup and how long the smell lasts

The cleanup, child seats included, is in how to remove vomit from a car seat: CDC's bleach solution (CDC) on hard plastic and rubber mats only, a disinfectant labeled for fabric and extraction on seats and carpet.

How long the smell lasts. We found no published figure for how long a vomit smell stays in a car, so treat any number of days you read as a guess. What decides it is whether residue is left:

  • Residue extracted, fabric fully dry: the source is gone, and what lingers in the air should clear as the car airs out. EPA's rule for indoor air is to "reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate" (EPA).
  • The smell returns on a hot afternoon: some residue is probably still in a seam, the foam or the carpet pad. Our reasoning, not a measured result: a hot cabin makes whatever is left smell stronger. Seats in sun-parked cars averaged 123°F after one hour in an Arizona test on days over 100°F (ASU and UC San Diego, 2018), and interior material emissions track surface temperature (Zhang et al., PNAS Nexus, 2024). A car that smells fine at 8 am and sour at 3 pm probably still has a source.
  • A damp, musty smell after the shampoo: the fabric or pad is still wet. Get it dry: EPA says materials dried within 24 to 48 hours will in most cases not grow mold (EPA).

When to go again. A smell that survives a dry, aired car needs a second pass at the source, not more freshener: an enzyme cleaner per its label, enough to reach as deep as the vomit went, then extraction and full drying. A fog or an ozone treatment comes last, for what is left in the air and the vents once the source is gone; it doesn't replace the clean (can ozone get rid of cigarette odor).

How to get fish smell out of a car

Fish smell is trimethylamine, made when "bacteria and fish enzymes convert TMAO into trimethylamine (TMA)"; acids such as lemon or vinegar "cause TMA to bind to water and become less volatile" (American Society for Nutrition). Remove the source, wipe hard surfaces and rubber mats with diluted white vinegar or lemon juice (test first, not on leather), extract any soaked carpet and air the car. Next time, use a sealed cooler in the trunk.

How to get mouse smell out of a car

Mouse smell is urine, droppings and nests, sometimes in the air intake or cabin filter. Here "vacuum first" is wrong: "Don't vacuum or sweep rodent urine, droppings, or nesting materials. This can cause tiny droplets containing viruses to get into the air" (CDC).

  1. 01

    Air it out

Hood, doors and trunk open for 20 minutes, CDC's step for vehicles (CDC).

  2. 02

    Spray until very wet

Gloves on. 1.5 cups of household bleach per gallon of water (1 part to 9), or an EPA-registered disinfectant; soak 5 minutes or per the label (CDC). Wipe up with paper towels and bag them. Bleach on hard plastic and rubber mats only; not screens, leather or fabric.

  3. 03

    Check the intakes and filters

If there is a nest, "remove both the nesting materials and the air filter" and fit a new one (CDC).

  4. 04

    Then clean the fabric

Shampoo upholstery "with a commercial disinfectant or with a commercial-grade steam cleaner or shampoo" (CDC).

How to get rid of new car smell

New car smell is gases from new plastics, foams, adhesives and leather, and heat drives it. In a one-month-old car in a Beijing summer, emissions tracked "material surface temperature rather than the air temperature", and formaldehyde exceeded China's cabin limit in 37.5% of measurements (Zhang et al., PNAS Nexus, 2024). Sun heats those surfaces fast: in an Arizona test on 100°F-plus days, dashboards in sun-parked cars averaged 157°F after one hour (ASU and UC San Diego, 2018).

It fades slowly: in two cars, new-car odorants were still present after 23 weeks of use (Buchecker et al., Indoor Air, 2022). Park in shade, drive the first minutes with windows down, and skip fresheners.

Quick fix or deep clean?

A quick fix (remove the item, air the car, a new cabin filter) is enough when nothing is wet or soaked. If the smell returns on a hot or damp day, the source is still in the foam, the pad or the A/C and needs extraction. EPA: "The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate" (EPA). Dog hair: how to remove pet hair from a car.

When to call a pro

Call a pro when the smell survives a DIY clean, the pad or foam is soaked, or there is visible mold. We clean and extract the source first, with enzymes on urine, vomit and milk, then run Koch-Chemie KC-Refresher, a fine hot mist through the cabin, ventilation and A/C evaporator, about 20 minutes, no ozone. Vomit, urine and mold are quoted from photos. A leak itself is a mechanic's job. Prices: car detailing cost.

Questions

Is mildew smell in a car harmful?

It can be. EPA says mold exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs of people with and without mold allergies, and that dead mold may still cause allergic reactions, so "it is not enough to simply kill the mold, it must also be removed" (EPA). Dry and clean the source rather than covering the smell.

Does vinegar get rid of musty smell in a car?

Vinegar can clean a hard surface, but it does not dry a wet pad or stop a leak, so the musty smell returns. Keep it off urine and leather.

Can I use an ozone generator in my car myself?

We don't recommend it. EPA says ozone at levels within public-health standards "is not effective at removing many odor-causing chemicals" and can damage rubber and fabrics (EPA), and California allows it for detailing only by trained personnel with no one inside (17 CCR 94803, 94801).

Will a new cabin air filter fix a musty or skunk smell?

It removes what the old filter trapped, and it is worth replacing after skunk spray, mice or a musty A/C. It does not dry a wet evaporator or a soaked carpet, so if the smell returns, find the water.

How do I keep the smell from coming back?

Fix the leak, never leave wet towels or gear in the car, dry spills within 24 to 48 hours (EPA), and run the fan with the A/C off for a few minutes before you park (Consumer Reports).
