PPF and Car Wraps Explained: How Film Works, How Long It Lasts, PPF vs Ceramic
Paint protection film (PPF) and vinyl wraps are both films laid over a car's paint, made for different jobs. PPF is a clear, satin or colored polyurethane film close to 8 mil thick that takes stone chips and self-heals light scratches. A vinyl wrap is a thinner cast film sold for color: 3M 2080 is 3.5 mil without adhesive. A ceramic coating is neither: it eases washing but does not stop a stone.

PPF, vinyl wrap and ceramic coating: three layers, three jobs
| Paint protection film | Vinyl wrap | Ceramic coating | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Polyurethane film under a self-healing clear coat, in clear gloss, satin or color | Cast vinyl film, sold for a color change, chrome delete or graphics | A liquid silica product that cures into a thin, water-repelling layer |
| Thickness | 7.6 mil for XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS without its liner (XPEL) | 3.5 mil without adhesive for 3M 2080 (3M) | A cured layer, not a film |
| Stone chips | Takes the hit: "no detrimental effect" in the ASTM D3170 / SAE J400 gravel test (XPEL) | Covers the paint, but 3M's warranty excludes dents from rocks or road debris (3M) | No: XPEL says coatings "can't stop rocks" (XPEL) |
| Light scratches | Self-heal in 20–30 minutes at room temperature (XPEL) | No self-healing claim | No self-healing claim; gloss and easier washing are its job |
| The maker's term | 10-year warranty against yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating (XPEL) | 3M 2080: 7 years on vertical panels, 2 on horizontal ones, in 3M's Zone 2, which covers the US (3M) | XPEL FUSION PLUS: 4 or 8 years by tier (see ceramic coating) |
A warranty term is a promise with conditions, not a forecast. Film and coating are not rivals: film goes on bare paint first, then a coating the film maker accepts over everything, as set out in ceramic coating vs PPF.
What film does, and where it stops
PPF is a sacrificial layer: a stone hits the film instead of the clear coat, and the top coat's elastomeric polymers let light scratches heal with warmth (XPEL). "Clear bra" is the older name for the same film. Its limits decide most owners' questions:
- A hit that cuts through the film does not heal, and XPEL's warranty excludes "the physical impact of rocks or road debris" (XPEL).
- Chips already in the paint stay visible under clear film, sealed in, so they are dealt with first.
- Automatic car washes are excluded from the same warranty.
- A partial front leaves a film edge across the hood; full front and full body cover more, at more cost.

Short answers to common film questions
How thick is PPF? Flagship clear films run close to 8 mil. XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS is 7.6 mil without its liner: a 0.5 mil clear coat over 6.0 mil of polyurethane and 1.1 mil of adhesive (XPEL). Wrap vinyl is under half that: 3M 2080 is 3.5 mil without adhesive. Brands side by side: does PPF protect against rock chips.
Do PPF bubbles go away? Small moisture bubbles usually do: XPEL says most go away "within a few days to a few weeks as the film settles and the adhesive cures" (XPEL). Dust or grit trapped under the film never settles out, and a bubble that outlasts those weeks goes back to the installer. What to check at handover: how long does PPF last.
Can PPF be removed? Yes. XPEL says its adhesive "will not damage paint or leave behind residue if removed" (XPEL), and its FAQ adds the condition: "when done correctly". Repainted panels and failing clear coat are the risk with any film; the method is in how long does PPF last.
What not to use on PPF? No automatic brush washes, which XPEL's warranty excludes. 3M rules out strong alkaline, acidic or alcoholic cleaners, wax with dyes, abrasive polish and rubbing compound (3M), and XPEL excludes coatings from other brands. The full aftercare table is in how long does PPF last.
Is PPF worth the cost, and where does it fall short? It tends to pay off on a new or high-value car that does freeway miles, wears a color that is hard to match and stays with you for years. It is hard to justify on a short lease or on paint that is already chipped, and it falls short against deep impacts and door dings. The decision table, the downsides and what Reddit's critics argue: is PPF worth it.
Is a vinyl wrap worth it? A wrap is bought for color, not for protection; its lifespan, paint safety, lease and resale questions belong to how long does a car wrap last.
Where prices and installs are covered
These guides explain; they don't quote. Coverage packages, finishes and prices for film are on paint protection film, and color changes and chrome delete on car wraps. A Tesla's own washing rules, which hold with or without film, are on Tesla detailing, and model-by-model film patterns on Tesla PPF. The paint you leave unfilmed still needs a proper wash and protection: a full detail covers it.
