Does PPF Protect Against Rock Chips? Film Types, Brands and Where Film Goes
Yes. Paint protection film takes the stone's hit instead of the paint: XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS shows "no detrimental effect" in the SAE J400 gravel test, run at 70 psi and −29°C. It is not armor, though. A large or sharp stone can still cut the film or dent the panel, and XPEL's warranty excludes rock impacts.

How PPF stops a rock chip, and where it stops working
A stone chip is a small, fast impact that knocks a flake of clear coat and color off the panel. Paint protection film, also called clear bra, puts a tough, stretchy layer in the way. XPEL's data sheet for ULTIMATE PLUS lists the build: a 0.5 mil self-healing clear coat over 6.0 mil of polyurethane and 1.1 mil of adhesive, 7.6 mil in all, and it stretches more than 300% before it breaks. A stone's hit lands on film that can give, instead of on the paint.
The proof makers quote is the gravelometer test (ASTM D3170 / SAE J400). It was written for coatings such as paint: air pressure fires about a pint of gravel at a test panel, and the panel is rated by how many chips of what size it shows (Intertek). XPEL runs it on its film at 70 psi and −29°C and reports "no detrimental effect".
Where it stops working:
- The hit that cuts through. A large, sharp or very fast stone can still tear the film or dent the panel under it. XPEL's warranty covers yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating, and excludes "the physical impact of rocks or road debris". So a gouged panel is re-filmed at the owner's cost; it is not a claim.
- Door dings. XPEL's own wording: film "can help reduce the impact of minor door dings and scratches, though it may not completely prevent damage from more severe impacts" (XPEL FAQ). A dent in the metal is a job for paintless dent repair.
- Off-roading. Branches and brush leave light scratches that the top coat heals; a gouge that goes through the film does not. Lifted trucks and canyon cars take chips low on the body, which is why a track pack adds rocker panels and A-pillars to the full front.
- Chips already there. Clear film hides nothing: a chip already in the paint stays visible under it, black paint included, and the film seals it in. Chips are filled, and swirls polished out with paint correction, before any film is cut.
| Hazard | What film does | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Gravel thrown up on the freeway | Takes the hit; no detrimental effect in the gravel test | XPEL data sheet |
| Swirls and light scratches | Heal in the top coat with heat | XPEL care |
| Fuel and oil spills | No detrimental effect after 30 minutes in gasoline, diesel or motor oil | XPEL data sheet |
| Door dings | Reduces minor ones; may not prevent damage from severe impacts | XPEL FAQ |
| A gouge or a stone that cuts the film | Does not heal; that panel is re-filmed, outside the warranty | XPEL warranty |
| Collision, hail, vandalism | Excluded from the warranty | XPEL warranty |
How self-healing PPF works
The top layer of a self-healing film is an elastomeric clear coat. XPEL describes "special elastomeric polymers that allow light scratches in the surface to 'heal' over time" (XPEL). A light scratch deforms that layer without cutting through it; warmth lets the polymer flow back to its original shape. XPEL gives 20 to 30 minutes at room temperature, and warm water at 120°F to speed it up in the cold (XPEL care). STEK and 3M describe the same thing for their films: healing with heat or hot water. A scratch that goes through the top coat is a different matter: XPEL says deeper scratches "may not fully heal". Washing, heat and how long film lasts: how long does PPF last.
PPF types: clear, hydrophobic, stealth and color
| Type | What it is | Maker example |
|---|---|---|
| Clear gloss | Invisible over gloss paint; the default clear bra | XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS: 7.6 mil, gloss above 90 GU (data sheet) |
| Hydrophobic top coat | A top coat "that repels water, making it easier to clean and maintain" (XPEL FAQ) | STEK DYNOshield: 8 mil, "nano-ceramic-infused top coat" (STEK); 3M Pro Series 200 Gloss lists "hydrophobic features" (3M) |
| Matte or satin (stealth) | Turns gloss paint satin, or keeps factory matte paint matte | XPEL STEALTH (XPEL); 3M Pro Series 200 Matte: 7.9 mil, 60° gloss of 17 (3M) |
| Color | A color change that keeps the chip protection | XPEL COLOR: 8 mil, self-healing, 16 colors in gloss, satin and metallic (XPEL) |
Matte stealth vs regular PPF. Same job, different surface: XPEL describes regular film as "clear" and keeping "the glossy appearance", and STEALTH as a satin finish that "transforms glossy paint into a matte look" (XPEL FAQ). Satin vs glossy is a choice of look: XPEL puts ULTIMATE PLUS and STEALTH under the same 10-year warranty terms (XPEL).
Is matte PPF hard to maintain? Not harder, but different. XPEL claims "excellent stain resistance" for STEALTH, and its care sheet says to take bug and other stains off promptly with its film cleaner, or 99% isopropyl alcohol for stubborn ones (XPEL care). On any film, no dyed wax, abrasive polish or rubbing compound, by 3M's rule for its PPF (3M).
Does color PPF damage the original paint? XPEL's answer: "No. When professionally installed and removed, COLOR PPF does not damage the factory paint" (XPEL FAQ). Repainted panels are the exception for any film. The finishes we fit are listed on paint protection film.
PPF brands: compare the published terms
| Film | Thickness | Self-healing | Maker warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS | 7.6 mil without liner (data sheet) | At room temperature, faster with warm water | 10 years: yellowing, cracking, blistering, delaminating (XPEL) |
| STEK DYNOshield | 8 mil (STEK) | By heat or hot water | 10 years: delamination, yellowing, bubbling, cracking; 12 with STEK Final Coat |
| 3M Scotchgard Pro Series 200 Gloss | 7.8 mil film with adhesive (3M) | With heat applied to the surface | 10-year consumer warranty; details on 3M's warranty card |
No independent test ranks PPF brands, so there is no honest single answer to which brand wins. Compare what the makers print: the gravel-test result on the data sheet, what the warranty covers and excludes, whether it transfers when you sell, and whether the installer registers it. The install matters as much as the logo: clean edges, wrapped where the panel allows, and no dust or lift lines under the film. On a lease or a new Tesla the coverage choice comes first: Tesla PPF lists patterns by model.
How to know if a car already has PPF. Look for a fine edge line across the hood and fenders (a partial front), at panel edges and around badges, sensors and lights. The paperwork settles it: XPEL's warranty needs a card and a receipt listing the covered areas (XPEL), so ask the seller for both.
Chrome, wraps, windshields, headlights and screens
| Surface | The film | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome, aluminum, brushed metal | PPF | XPEL says its film can be applied to chrome, aluminum and brushed metals (XPEL FAQ). 3M lists only "OEM painted surfaces" for Pro Series 200 (3M). Ask which film the installer uses |
| A vinyl wrap or racing stripes | PPF over the vinyl | XPEL says yes, as an extra layer (XPEL FAQ). Check the wrap maker's warranty too |
| Windshield | Windshield protection film, a separate product | Built for chips and cracks; XPEL gives it a 1-year warranty (XPEL) and advises new wiper blades (XPEL FAQ). California limits film on the windshield (below) |
| Headlights | Clear PPF | XPEL: "helps prevent yellowing by protecting your headlights from UV exposure" and takes chips (XPEL). Restore a yellowed lens first; clear film only, never smoked |
| Touchscreens, piano-black trim | Interior film | XPEL's RX screen film comes in high gloss or matte (XPEL) |
Is headlight protection film worth it? On a new or freshly restored lens, it is the same chip protection as on the paint, plus a shield against the UV that yellows lenses, by XPEL's account. A lens that has already yellowed needs headlight restoration before film; film over haze seals the haze in. California's lamp-color rule (Vehicle Code 25950) is why the film stays clear: see the law box on paint protection film.
Protecting a windshield from rock chips: film, coating or tint
Three products get confused here, and only one is made for impacts:
- Windshield protection film is the impact layer for glass, sold separately from paint film, with a far shorter warranty: 1 year at XPEL against 10 for its paint film (XPEL). XPEL advises new wiper blades with it, to help protect the film from surface scratches (XPEL FAQ).
- A ceramic coating on glass sheds water. Ceramic Pro, which sells glass coatings, says one "won't protect against something like a rock chip hitting your glass at high speeds" (Ceramic Pro).
- Window tint controls heat, glare and UV; it is not sold as impact protection. See window tint.
Is windshield protection film worth it? In California, check the law before the price. Vehicle Code 26708(a)(1) bars driving with "any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield", with narrow exceptions (lower-corner squares, a top strip, clear 88% film with a dermatologist's certificate). There is no general exception for a full-windshield protection film, and we don't install one. What helps any windshield: more distance behind gravel trucks and construction traffic, and a chip looked at early.

When to call a pro
Film is fitted in an installer's bay after the paint is checked and any chips are dealt with. The quote names the film (XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS, STEALTH or COLOR PPF), the panels it covers and the maker's warranty, registered to your car.
PPF and rock chips: more questions
Is clear bra the same as PPF, and how thick is it?
Yes: "clear bra" is the older name for the same film, close to 8 mil thick in the flagship clear lines; each maker's figure is in the brands table. What PPF is, beside a wrap and a coating: PPF and car wraps explained.
Does a ceramic coating stop rock chips?
No. A coating adds gloss and eases washing but will not stop a stone; why is in does ceramic coating prevent scratches or rock chips.
Is PPF on an infotainment screen worth it?
It is a different film: makers sell screen and interior film, such as XPEL's RX, rather than paint film for screens. XPEL advises a screen protector because it "helps prevent scratches, reduces glare, and protects against fingerprints and smudges" (XPEL FAQ); its RX film comes in high gloss or matte (XPEL). On a large, often-touched screen it is a sensible thin layer.
If PPF stops chips, is it worth it on a daily driver?
That turns on miles, the car's value and how long you keep it, more than on the film. Partial front, full front and full body trade coverage against cost; the full reckoning, including downsides, is in is PPF worth it, and prices by coverage are on paint protection film.
