What Is Ceramic Coating? What It Protects and Which Surfaces Take It
Ceramic coating is a liquid, silica-based (SiO2) coating wiped onto a car's clear coat, where it cures into a thin, hard, water-repelling layer bonded to the paint. It adds gloss, resists UV fading and chemical stains, and lets dirt wash off easily. It does not stop rock chips, scratches or hard-water spots.

How ceramic coating works
"Ceramic", "nano-ceramic" and "SiO2" name one class of product: a liquid with a high silica content, sometimes with titanium dioxide. Once it is spread on clean paint, its silica precursors react with the hydroxyl groups on the surface and form silicon-oxygen-silicon bonds as it cures. That is the difference from a wax or polymer sealant, which rests on the paint instead of bonding to it (Polymers review, 2025).
The cured layer is very thin. XPEL's data sheet for FUSION PLUS CLASSIC, the paint coating we apply, gives 7 microns, needs 6 hours before it gets wet, and reaches full cure in 3 days (XPEL). A factory clear coat is usually 35–50 microns (DeFelsko), so the coating is a fraction of the layer it protects.
The surface it leaves is slick and hydrophobic: coatings reach water contact angles of 90–150° (Polymers review), so water beads and sheets off and carries loose dirt with it. That is the "self-cleaning" effect coating makers advertise. In practice it means easier washes, not fewer. How coating types and brands differ is covered in ceramic coating vs graphene coating.
What ceramic coating protects against, and what it doesn't
| Threat | What the coating does | In the maker's terms |
|---|---|---|
| UV fading and oxidation | Protects the paint under it | XPEL's 4-year CLASSIC warranty covers "oxidation, loss of gloss, UV damage, color fading" (XPEL) |
| Bird droppings, sap, bugs, chemical stains | Resists etching and lets them release; still remove them promptly | "Defends against stains, chemical etching, and environmental damage" (XPEL) |
| Dirt and road film | Beads water and releases grime with a gentle wash | Makes the car easier to keep clean; it still needs washing |
| Shine | Adds gloss and depth to the paint already there | "adds depth, improves shine and surface clarity" (XPEL) |
| Hard-water spots | Not stopped: minerals left to dry still stain | Water spots are excluded. LADWP rates its water hard, with 2022 averages of 8.6, 9.8 and 16.3 grains per gallon by zone (LADWP) |
| Scratches and swirls | Not stopped | "Scratches, scuffs, scrapes, chips to the painted surface" are excluded (XPEL) |
| Rock chips | Not stopped | "ceramic coatings can't stop rocks" (XPEL); damage from stones is excluded |
The same warranty excludes damage from automatic car washes and wrong wash tools, so the protection depends on how the car is washed: see how to maintain a ceramic coated car. Spots that are already etched: how to remove water spots from car paint.
Does ceramic coating prevent scratches or rock chips?
No to both, despite the "9H" on the box. 9H is a grade from the pencil test in ASTM D3363: pencil leads of known hardness are pushed across the cured film at 45°, and the grade is the hardest lead that does not scratch or gouge it (KTA). The coatings industry calls the test "qualitative and relative" (American Coatings Association). XPEL rates its 1-micron glass coating 9H as well (XPEL): the grade describes the surface of a very thin film, not armor.
XPEL claims "improved scratch resistance" for its paint coating (XPEL), yet the same maker excludes scratches from the warranty. A layer a few microns thick has nothing to absorb a stone's impact. Chips on the hood, bumper and rocker panels (the Model Y rocker question comes up often) are a job for paint protection film: see does PPF protect against rock chips and ceramic coating vs PPF. Film and coating can be combined, with the coating on top of the film.
Will ceramic coating hide swirl marks or scratches?
No. The coating is clear and locks in whatever is under it, so swirls, holograms and scratches stay visible for as long as the coating lasts. It adds gloss, but it fills nothing. That is why coating makers want the paint polished first: CarPro asks for paint "polished to a high level" before its coating (CarPro), and XPEL's warranties exclude scratches already there at installation.
Our ceramic coating package already includes a one-step machine polish; heavier defects need a two-step paint correction before the coating. What polishing can remove: how to remove swirl marks from a car.
Which surfaces can be ceramic coated
| Surface | What the coating does | One maker's published terms (XPEL) |
|---|---|---|
| Gloss paint and clear PPF | Gloss, UV and stain resistance, easier washing | CLASSIC: 7 microns (XPEL); 4-year warranty against oxidation, loss of gloss, UV damage and color fading (XPEL) |
| Matte or satin paint, satin film | Protects without adding shine, only with a matte-specific product | SATIN: made "specifically for satin paint and STEALTH" (XPEL); 4-year warranty, same coverage as CLASSIC (XPEL) |
| Wheels and calipers | Brake dust and grime release more easily | 12–17 microns, made for "constant heat" (XPEL); 3-year warranty against "loss of gloss and environmental contaminant staining" (XPEL) |
| Glass | Rain beads and runs off; bugs and grime let go | 1 micron (XPEL); 2-year warranty against "loss of hydrophobicity" (XPEL) |
| Exterior plastic trim | Slows UV fading of sound trim | 1-year warranty against "environmental contaminant staining and fading" (XPEL) |
| Headlights | Easier cleaning over a restored lens | Goes on after headlight restoration, over its UV topcoat |
| Leather and fabric | Stain and spill resistance | A separate interior product: see is fabric protection for car seats worth it |
Each surface takes its own formula: a paint coating is not the product for glass, wheels or trim. Every XPEL warranty above needs a yearly inspection by an XPEL certified installer, and a missed one voids it (XPEL). Other makers publish different terms, and a warranty term is not a lifespan.
Is ceramic coating worth it on rims, and does it stop brake dust?
A wheel coating doesn't stop brake dust: the pads shed it every time you brake. What it changes is how the dust comes off. XPEL says brake dust and road grime "can be repelled" from a coated wheel (XPEL), yet its own wheel warranty lists damage from brake dust among what it does not cover (XPEL). Read that as easier cleaning, not clean wheels.
It is worth it when:
- the wheels have fine spokes or deep barrels that take long to clean;
- the car runs high-dust brake pads;
- the calipers are painted and you want them kept clean.
Aftermarket wheels take a coating the same way factory ones do; the finish, not the brand, decides the product. Gloss faces take a wheel coating, while matte or satin wheels need a matte-safe one, as matte paint does.
Does ceramic coating work on matte or satin paint?
Yes, but only with a coating made for matte or satin finishes. Matte paint looks flat because its surface diffuses light; a gloss product evens it out, and the shine it adds may not come back off. Kia's matte-paint bulletin says waxes and sealers not formulated for matte paint "will add gloss and be very difficult or impossible to remove", tells owners not to use gloss protective agents, and notes that the warranty "does not cover the vehicle's matte appearance" (Kia PS746, 2023). Makers now sell matte-specific coatings; XPEL's FUSION PLUS SATIN is one.
Can paint correction be done on matte or satin paint? No. Polishing is what makes a surface shine. GM's bulletin for the matte Hummer EV says not to buff out scratches, because doing so "will polish the matte paint", and that "the only way to correct this type of damage is to have the panel repainted" (GM 23-NA-016, 2024). Matte paint is cleaned and protected, never corrected, so it should be coated as it is, or covered with satin film such as XPEL STEALTH, which also takes the chips a coating can't. Both bulletins also rule out brush car washes.
Ceramic coating on glass and plastic trim
Glass. A glass coating works as a rain repellent: water beads and runs off, and bug residue and grime let go more easily. The windshield is the one to check first (below).
Will ceramic coating restore faded plastic trim? Partly. A trim coating darkens and seals grey, sun-faded plastic: CarPro says its trim coating "rejuvenates exterior plastics", for "up to two years or more", after the trim is scrubbed clean (CarPro). It cannot rebuild trim that is cracked, chalky or peeling. Trim coating vs trim dressing: a dressing sits on the surface and is renewed often; a coating cures into a layer. A full detail dresses the trim; the coating is the longer-lasting option.
Should you coat the windshield?
Only where your carmaker allows it. Tesla says to apply a hydrophobic window coating "only to the side and rear windows, not the front windshield", because it "may affect the visibility of the Self-Driving cameras" (Model Y manual); our glass add-on follows that on every Tesla. Rivian rules it out for a different reason: "Don't wax, wash, or coat the windshield with products containing water repellent", because they "can affect rain detection, preventing the automatic wiper function from working correctly" (Rivian R1S Owner's Guide). Read the cleaning section of your own manual before any repellent goes on the windshield.
Where it is allowed, the wipers set the pace. CarPro rates its FlyBy30 windshield coating at "approximately 4~5 months (1 season)" of water repellency on a windshield, asks for 2–3 coats there against one on the other windows, and says to clean the blades so they don't chatter (CarPro). Gtechniq calls wiper judder after its G1 glass coating "unusual but not unheard of", says it usually stops "after a few weeks", and notes that all rain-repellent glass coatings leave a brief streak behind the blade, most of all in drizzle (Gtechniq).
Glass coating vs a wipe-on rain repellent. Both make rain bead and run off. A wipe-on repellent such as Rain-X Original "typically lasts about 3 months depending on weather and environmental conditions", says Rain-X (Rain-X). A glass coating goes on clean glass and cures: XPEL's data sheet asks for 24 hours before it gets wet, or 48 hours if it cures below 72°F (XPEL), and the coating carries a written term (table above). On a windshield, wiper wear narrows the gap: CarPro's own figure there is one season.
How can you tell if a car has a ceramic coating?
Water beading is not proof. Wax, sealants and spray "ceramic" products bead water too, and an old coating that is clogged with grime may hardly bead at all. A coating that is working shows tight, round beads, water that sheets off fast as you rinse, and paint that feels slick when clean.
The real proof is paperwork. A professional coating comes with the product name, the installer and the date; XPEL asks for the warranty card and the original receipt listing the coated areas before it honors any claim (XPEL). On a used car, ask the seller or dealer for them. Without paperwork, an installer can test a panel, but nobody can tell you the product or how many years are left. Dealer-applied coatings: should you put a ceramic coating on a brand new car.
Professional help
When to call a pro
Book a professional coating when you want years of gloss and easier washing, and the paint is sound. The paint gets a decontamination wash and a polish first, because a coating seals in what is under it. Wheels, glass, trim and film are add-ons. For rock chips, choose film; for deep swirls, correction first. Whether it suits your car: is ceramic coating worth it.
Questions
How long does ceramic coating last?
Years, not months, but a maker's warranty term is not a promise of how long it looks new: XPEL's FUSION PLUS line runs from 1 year (LITE) to 8 years (PREMIUM), each on its own conditions (XPEL). Washing, sun, parking and hard water decide the rest. The detail is in how long does ceramic coating last.
Is ceramic coating better than wax?
It bonds to the paint and lasts years instead of months; wax is cheaper, easier to apply and renewed every few weeks or months. Neither stops chips or scratches. The comparison: which is better, wax or ceramic coating.
Can ceramic coating go over PPF or a vinyl wrap?
Over PPF, yes: the film goes on first, then a coating the film maker accepts (we use XPEL FUSION PLUS over XPEL film); see ceramic coating vs PPF. Over a vinyl wrap, only if the wrap maker's warranty allows it, and 3M's warranty for its 2080 film excludes coatings (3M): see can you ceramic coat a wrapped Tesla or a Cybertruck.
Does a brand-new car need a polish before ceramic coating?
It gets one in our package: a one-step polish after the decontamination wash. What the coating makers ask for, new cars included: do I need paint correction before ceramic coating.
