Should You Put a Ceramic Coating on a Brand-New Car? Timing, Dealer Packages and Warranty
Yes, if you will keep the car for years: new paint has the least wear, so it is the easiest time to coat. Factory paint is oven-baked, so there is no cure wait. It still needs a decontamination wash and usually a light polish first. Buy a dealer package only if it names the product and its warranty.

Is it okay to ceramic coat a brand-new car?
Yes. A new car is the best starting point a coating will ever get: the clear coat has not yet collected years of wash marks. The coating adds gloss and easier washing, not chip protection: XPEL says coatings "can't stop rocks" (XPEL). Whether that pays off for you: is ceramic coating worth it.
"New" does not mean untouched, though. Before you take delivery, the dealer has already worked on the paint. Audi's pre-delivery detail report, for one, tells the dealer to "Remove protective covering", wash the car, wax it, and "Re-inspect vehicle for surface scratches, swirl marks, paint chips" (Audi PDI report). So a new car arrives washed by someone else and often waxed, and the wax has to come off before a coating can bond (why wax blocks a coating).
The coating makers agree. Ceramic Pro requires a machine polish on vehicles over 3 months old, and says "newer vehicles may also require a machine polish if advised by the approved applicator" (Ceramic Pro). XPEL's CLASSIC warranty excludes coatings installed over visible "scratches, scuffs, scrapes, chips to the painted surface" (XPEL).
Ceramic coating a new car: pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The least prep it will ever need: usually a one-step polish, not a correction | Still not zero prep: dealer wax and any delivery swirls have to come off first |
| Gloss and easy washing from the first month, not after the first wash marks | No protection from rock chips or scratches; that is film's job |
| Sun, sap and droppings release more easily, which matters in a long LA dry season | Upkeep stays: a hand wash about every two weeks and no brush car washes |
| Keeps a new car looking new for as long as you own it | Multi-year terms carry a yearly inspection, part of the real cost |
Is it worth the money on a new vehicle? If you will keep it three years or more and wash it on a schedule, yes: the polish is light, so the coating costs least for what it does. On a short lease, usually not (leased cars).
How long should you wait to ceramic coat a new car?
You don't have to wait for the paint. Factory paint is cured in the paint shop's ovens before the car leaves the plant: Magna describes the conventional bake at 140°C (Magna). Advice to wait weeks or months for a new car's paint to cure has no basis in that process. A body-shop repaint is different: if a panel was repainted before delivery, ask the body shop when its paint can be coated.
The better rule is to coat soon, before wash marks and fallout build up; past 3 months Ceramic Pro's terms call for a machine polish anyway. Until then, hand wash it or use a touchless wash, never a brush tunnel (car washes and coatings).
Three cases change the order:
- You also want paint protection film. Film goes on first, the coating over it (doing both).
- Matte or satin factory paint. It needs a matte-specific product: Audi's report warns that conventional polishes and waxes "can destroy the matte finish effect" (Audi PDI report). More: coatings on matte paint.
- Delivery damage. Chips or deep scratches go on the dealer's list to repair before the coating, which would otherwise seal them in.
How to protect a brand-new car, in order
- 01
Inspect at delivery
In daylight, before you sign: look for swirls, chips and scratches, and get anything you find written down.
- 02
Decide on the dealer's add-ons
Accept "paint protection" only if it names the product (below); otherwise ask for it to be removed.
- 03
Wash gently until the coating
Hand wash or touchless only, never a brush tunnel.
- 04
Film, if you want it
Paint protection film goes on before the coating.
- 05
Decontamination wash
Shampoo, iron remover, tar remover and clay.
- 06
Inspect and polish
Under a light. A new car usually needs a one-step polish; a two-step correction is for visible damage (paint correction before coating; how correction works).
- 07
Panel wipe, then coat
The wipe strips wax and polishing oils so the coating bonds to bare clear coat. Keep the car dry the first night.
- 08
Keep it up
A pH-neutral hand wash about every two weeks and, where the product requires it, the yearly inspection (how to maintain a ceramic coated car).
Is it worth getting ceramic coating from a dealership?
It can be, if the package is a real coating, properly applied, at a price you would pay anyway. California law files any dealer-installed "chemical or film paint sealant or protectant" under one name (Civil Code 2981(r)), so a "paint protection" line on the contract doesn't tell you whether it is a coating, a sealant or film. The FTC lists "special car paint coatings" among the dealer add-ons that "add up quickly", and tells buyers to "tell the dealer to remove any add-ons you don't want" and to know the total cost, "not just the monthly payment" (FTC).
What a dealer may not volunteer, and what to ask before you sign:
- Which product? The maker and the line, not "ceramic protection". A sealant is not a coating.
- What prep? Was the paint washed, decontaminated and polished, and the dealer's wax removed? A coating over swirls seals them in.
- Polished with what? Ask what a "buffing detail" is done with. Nissan's own bulletin says "do not use a rotary buffer", because its uniform rotation "can create swirl marks instead of removing them" (Nissan NTB23-041).
- Whose warranty? The coating maker's, registered in your name, and where the yearly inspection happens.
- What does it cost per month? In California the answer is on a separate form, below.
Dealer paint protection under California law
- It has a legal name. A "chemical or film paint sealant or protectant" installed by the dealer after the sale is a "surface protection product" (Civil Code 2981(r)).
- It is priced on its own form. Before you sign a financed purchase, the dealer must give you, and get your signature on, a separate disclosure that prices it and shows your payment both ways: "Installment Payment EXCLUDING Listed Items" and "INCLUDING Listed Items" (Civil Code 2982.2).
- It is optional, in writing. From October 1, 2026, under the CARS Act, a dealer that writes to you about an add-on must disclose that "the add-on is not required and the consumer can purchase or lease the vehicle without the add-on" (1784.41(b)) (SB 766).
- No charge if it voids the paint warranty. The same act bars charging for a "surface protection product that renders the manufacturer's warranty for the paint job void" (1784.42(a)(7)).
More on dealer film under the CARS Act: is PPF worth it. Not legal advice.
Will ceramic coating void my new car paint warranty?
Not by itself. Under federal warranty law, as the FTC explains it, a warrantor generally can't make coverage depend on buying "an item or service from a particular company"; what it may do is exclude damage caused by you or a "non-authorized third party" (FTC). So a carmaker can't require its dealer's coating, but it can refuse a claim for damage an aftermarket product or a careless polish caused.
Does ceramic coating affect a Tesla warranty? Tesla's New Vehicle Limited Warranty does not mention ceramic or paint coatings. It excludes paint defects caused by "installation of an accessory" or "exposure to chemical substances", and treats stone chips, sap and droppings as environmental damage it doesn't cover (Tesla). What it leaves to you is damage a product, or whoever applied it, causes. Our Tesla page follows Tesla's own care rules.
The two warranties don't overlap. Ceramic Pro excludes "matters which are covered by vehicle manufacturers' warranty" (Ceramic Pro), and XPEL leaves vehicle manufacturer's defects to the carmaker's protection plan (XPEL). Peeling clear coat from a factory defect is a claim on the carmaker's warranty, not the coating's; keep the invoice that names the coating and the prep. Your own warranty booklet is the final word.
The dealership ruined my brand-new ceramic coating: what now?
If a service visit ended with a brush wash or a machine buff, the coating maker won't cover the damage: XPEL excludes damage from "automatic car washes or incorrect wash tools" and from "third parties not authorized by the Company" (XPEL).
- Photograph it in daylight that day, with the repair order.
- Raise it with the service manager, in writing. The damage happened in the dealer's care, so the fix is the dealer's conversation, not the coating maker's.
- Have the installer assess it. Light wash marring often comes out with a polish on the affected panels, and the polish takes the coating off where it is used, so those panels need recoating. A repaint is a separate case: XPEL's terms exclude areas "not re-coated after a paint or body repair".
- Next time, write "no wash" on the repair order.
What is the best protective coating for a new car?
| Option | Handles | Doesn't handle | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ceramic coating | Gloss, easy washing, sun, sap and droppings, for years | Rock chips, scratches, water spots | You keep the car and wash it on a schedule |
| Paint protection film | Rock chips and light scratches where it covers | Uncovered panels; gloss on its own | Freeway miles, a hard-to-match color |
| Film plus coating | Chips at the front, easy washing everywhere | Cost: the most of the four | A new car you plan to keep a long time |
| Sealant | Gloss and beading for months | Longevity: it is renewed several times a year | A short ownership or a lease |
The best new car ceramic coating is the one whose terms you have read: a named product, the maker's term and conditions in writing, installer registration, and prep in the price. Film and coating compared: ceramic coating vs PPF.

When to call a pro
Our ceramic coating is XPEL FUSION PLUS, applied wherever the car is parked, over two visits: the paint is checked under a light with you, then a decontamination wash, a one-step machine polish, a panel wipe and the coating, and after the cure a second inspection and the maker's warranty registered. If you want chips covered too, our paint protection film goes on first, with FUSION PLUS over the film. Prices by vehicle size are on the ceramic coating price table.
Questions
Should I ceramic coat a leased new car?
Usually not to avoid lease-end charges, since a coating stops neither dents nor scratches through the paint: is ceramic coating worth it on a leased car.
Can I ceramic coat my new car myself?
Yes, if you can do the prep: a decontamination wash, removal of the dealer's wax, a polish where needed, and a panel wipe, in shade and inside the bottle's temperature range. On a new car the polish is light, so DIY is more realistic than on an older one. What it takes: can I ceramic coat my car myself.
How do I know if the dealer already coated my car?
Check the paperwork first: a real coating comes with a named product and a warranty card or registration. Water beading proves little, because the dealer's wax beads too. If a coating is on and you want film, tell the film installer before the appointment. More: how to tell if a car has a ceramic coating.
How much does it cost to ceramic coat a brand-new car?
The same as any car of its size: the price follows the vehicle size and the prep, and a new car usually needs only the one-step polish that our package already includes. Prices by size are on ceramic coating; everything else is on car detailing prices.
