Ceramic Coating vs PPF: Which Is Better, and Do You Need Both?
PPF is better against rock chips and scratches: it is a thick polyurethane film that takes the hit. A ceramic coating is better for gloss and easy washing, but XPEL says coatings "can't stop rocks". They solve different problems, so many owners do both: film on the most exposed panels first, then a coating over everything.

The difference: film takes the hit, a coating keeps the paint easy to clean
Paint protection film (PPF, or clear bra) is a sheet of polyurethane laid over the paint. XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS is 7.6 mil thick: a 0.5 mil self-healing top coat over 6.0 mil of polyurethane and 1.1 mil of adhesive. In the ASTM D3170 / SAE J400 gravel test it shows "no detrimental effect" (XPEL data sheet). How film handles a stone, and where it fails: does PPF protect against rock chips.
A ceramic coating is a liquid silica (SiO2) product that cures into a micro-thin, hard, water-repelling layer on the clear coat. Water sheets off, dirt lets go, and the gloss deepens. It doesn't absorb impacts: XPEL, which makes both, says coatings "can't stop rocks" but "can prevent damage from sap, grime, and corrosives" (XPEL).
XPEL's own verdict: "PPF is generally better for preventing physical damage like scratches and chips due to its thicker, impact-resistant layer" (XPEL FAQ). Neither one fixes damage already there: chips, swirls and scratches are sealed in, so they are dealt with first, by paint correction.
PPF vs ceramic coating vs wax vs wrap
| PPF | Ceramic coating | Wax or sealant | Vinyl wrap | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Clear (or satin, or colored) polyurethane film, about 7.6 mil | A silica-based liquid that cures into a micro-thin layer | Carnauba (wax) or synthetic polymers (sealant), wiped on | Cast vinyl sold for color: 3M 2080 is 3.5 mil without adhesive (3M) |
| Rock chips | Takes the hit; passes the gravel test. Deep impacts still get through | No. Ceramic Pro excludes "impact with a foreign object (i.e., stone chips)" (Ceramic Pro) | No | Covers the paint, but 3M's warranty excludes "dents caused by physical impact of rocks or road debris" (3M) |
| Light scratches and swirls | Self-heal "in 20-30 minutes at room temperature" (XPEL) | Not covered: "Swirl marks, marring, scratches" are excluded (Ceramic Pro) | No | No self-healing claim |
| Gloss and easy washing | Glossy, and easier with a sealant or coating on top | Its main job | Yes, for weeks to months | Depends on the finish |
| How long, by the maker | "Between 5 to 10 years" (XPEL FAQ); 10-year warranty against yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating (XPEL) | Warranties in years: XPEL FUSION PLUS carries 4 or 8 years by tier (see ceramic coating); "lifetime" tiers need annual inspections | Carnauba "typically lasts 4–8 weeks"; synthetics "up to 4–6 months" (Chemical Guys) | 3M 2080: 7 years on vertical panels, 2 on horizontal ones, in 3M's Zone 2, which covers the US (3M) |
Film lasts longest of the four, and it is the only one built and tested to take chips. A warranty term is a promise with conditions, not a forecast of how long the finish looks new: how long does PPF last. Wax against coating in detail: which is better, wax or ceramic coating. A graphene coating belongs in the coating column: Chemical Guys describes most as products that "combine graphene oxide with SiO2 ceramic" (Chemical Guys); more in ceramic coating vs graphene coating. Wraps: how long does a car wrap last.
Which one does your car need?
| Your car | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily freeway miles, or canyon roads | PPF on the front, a coating on the rest | Chips come from the road ahead; the front takes them |
| New, high-value, or a color that would be hard to match | Full front or full-body PPF, then a coating | Keeps the factory finish, which a repaint replaces |
| Parked outside, washed often, mostly city driving | Ceramic coating | Sun, sap, bird droppings and hard-water washing are the daily wear, not stones |
| A lease you will hand back | Partial-front PPF, or a coating alone | Covers the panels that chip most, at the smallest outlay |
| Garaged weekend car | Wax or sealant, or a coating | Little road exposure; renewing a wax is part of the hobby |
| You want a new color | A vinyl wrap, or colored PPF for color with chip protection | Wrap film is sold for looks; colored PPF is film |
Coverage options, from partial front to full body, are laid out on paint protection film. Whether the spend pays off for a given car: is PPF worth it and is ceramic coating worth it.
Doing both: what goes on first, PPF or ceramic coating?
Film first, always. 3M's installation guidelines open the prep with: "Make sure there is no ceramic coating applied to the vehicle paint. If there is, ceramic coating can be removed by working with an authorized paint correction specialist/automotive detailer" (3M). A car coated first therefore pays for the coating to come off before film can go on. Wax and sealant are stripped too.
The coating then goes over the film and the paint around it. XPEL says a coating on its film makes "the surface easier to clean while enhancing the film's longevity and gloss" (XPEL FAQ). Two warranty rules decide which coating:
- The film maker's. XPEL's film warranty excludes "non-XPEL branded ceramic coatings", and XPEL states that "XPEL FUSION PLUS ceramic coating will not void XPEL's PPF warranty" (XPEL, FAQ).
- The coating maker's. Ceramic Pro's coatings on film or vinyl "will not be warranted longer than the length of coverage from the warranty of the substrate" (Ceramic Pro): the coating's term can't outlast the film's.
Do you still need a coating over film? No; it is an upgrade. Without one, XPEL asks owners to seal ULTIMATE PLUS and STEALTH with its Ceramic Boost "at least once every 6 months" (XPEL care). A coating replaces that routine with a longer-lasting layer.
The order, step by step
- 01
Check and correct the paint
Chips filled and swirls polished out, because film and coating both seal in what is under them.
- 02
Strip the paint bare
No wax, sealant or coating left where film will go, in 3M's order.
- 03
Fit the film
On the panels you chose, from partial front to full body.
- 04
Coat the film and the rest of the paint
With a coating the film maker accepts.
- 05
Wash by the stricter rules
Hand or touchless, pH-neutral soap, no brushes, and dry the car.
Will a ceramic coating make matte or stealth PPF shiny?
Not if it is a coating made for matte. XPEL's answer for its satin film: "applying a ceramic coating to XPEL STEALTH will not make it shiny" (XPEL FAQ). Its matte-specific coating, FUSION PLUS SATIN, is described as protecting satin and matte finishes "without altering the appearance" (XPEL). Other coatings carry no such promise: Ceramic Pro says outright that a "Change of finish (i.e. from Matte to Satin) is not warrantied", recommending a 50/50 test sample before you buy (Ceramic Pro). Ask for a test panel on matte film or matte paint.
Is PPF plus ceramic worth it, or a scam?
Neither product is a scam; the overselling is. What is real: film's gravel and weathering results are printed on its data sheet, and coatings do make a car easier to wash. What gets oversold:
- "9H" as scratch-proof. "9H" borrows the pencil-hardness scale (ASTM D3363), a lab test that pushes pencil leads across a cured coating (KTA). It says nothing about stones, and coating warranties exclude scratches and chips anyway.
- "Lifetime" coatings. Ceramic Pro's lifetime tier needs a yearly inspection by an approved applicator; miss one and the term drops to 7 years (ION) or 5 (Gold) (Ceramic Pro).
- "Coating instead of film." No coating maker claims chip protection.
Why not just repaint later? A repaint replaces the factory finish instead of keeping it, and repainted panels limit what film can go on afterwards: Avery Dennison lists "Non-OEM painted vehicles" as unsuitable for its SW900 wrap film (Avery Dennison). Film keeps the original paint under it.
A fair price is one that names the film or coating, the coverage and the prep. Ours are on car detailing prices, and on the PPF and ceramic coating tables.
New car, black car, Tesla
New car. Before the first chips is the time for film, since every chip it picks up has to be filled before film seals it in. Driving a new car home first is normal; just book the film before months of freeway miles. If the dealer applied a coating, tell the installer: by 3M's rule it comes off before film goes on. More: should you put a ceramic coating on a brand-new car.
Black car. The usual worry on black paint is fine wash scratches and swirls. That is where the two differ most: light scratches in film self-heal at room temperature, faster with warm water (XPEL), while coating warranties exclude swirl marks. A coating makes a black car easier to wash; film on the front, or the full body, keeps its paint from marking. Either way, careful hand washing matters more than the product.
Tesla. The same rule applies: film where chips land, a coating for washing. Tesla PPF patterns and prices by model are on Tesla PPF; window tint is a separate film, for the glass.
Professional help
When to call a pro
Our paint protection film is XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS, STEALTH or COLOR PPF, fitted in the installer's bay after a paint check. Our ceramic coating is XPEL FUSION PLUS, the film maker's own coating, applied wherever the car is parked after a decontamination wash and a one-step machine polish. For both, full front film with FUSION PLUS over the film and the rest of the paint is from $3,199 for a sedan, with film first and the coating second.
Questions
Is a graphene coating better than PPF?
It answers a different question. A graphene coating is still a coating: Chemical Guys describes most as graphene oxide combined "with SiO2 ceramic" (Chemical Guys). It competes with ceramic coatings on gloss and water beading, not with film on chips. More: ceramic coating vs graphene coating.
Is hydrophobic PPF the same as PPF with a ceramic coating?
No. Hydrophobic PPF has a water-repelling top coat built into the film; XPEL names its ULTIMATE FUSION as an example (XPEL FAQ). A coating over standard film is a separate layer applied after the install. Both make film easier to clean; neither changes how the film takes a chip.
Can you wax PPF?
You can, but you don't need to. 3M says regular waxing of its film "is not necessary", and if you wax, to avoid wax with dyes, abrasive polishes or rubbing compounds, which damage the film's surface (3M). On coated film, skip wax entirely and use the coating maker's topper.
Can a car with PPF and a ceramic coating go through a car wash?
Not an automatic one: XPEL's film warranty excludes damage from "automatic car washes" (XPEL). Which washes each coating maker allows is in can a ceramic coated car go through a car wash.
