How Long Does Ceramic Coating Last? Warranties, LA Sun, Street Parking and Hard Water
A professional ceramic coating lasts years, not months. Makers' written terms run from 6 months to 8 years, or "lifetime", the longer ones kept only with a paid annual inspection. The real figure depends on care and exposure: regular hand washes, drying off hard water, and how much sun, sap and sprinkler water the car sees.

How long does ceramic coating last?
Read the number on a coating as a warranty term, not a promise of how long it looks new. Ceramic Pro's own answer is "anywhere from 6 months to 10 years", and it names "harsh weather conditions, UV radiation, bird droppings, tree sap" as what shortens it (Ceramic Pro).
Does ceramic coating really last 5 years? A professional one is warranted that long or longer, if it is washed and inspected the way its maker asks. XPEL warrants FUSION PLUS CLASSIC, the coating we apply, for 4 years and PREMIUM for 8 (XPEL); those are warranty terms, conditional on care and inspection, not measured lifespans. CarPro rates its enthusiast coating at "2 ~ 5 years" with no installer warranty (CarPro).
Can ceramic coating last 20 years? Not as one application. The longest terms are maintenance plans: Ceramic Pro's lifetime tiers need a yearly inspection whose fee covers a wash, decontamination "and possible reapplication of coating" (Ceramic Pro), and XPEL's 8-year PREMIUM needs "an annual inspection and top-off application using FUSION PLUS LITE" (XPEL). What the coating is and what it protects: what is ceramic coating.
Ceramic coating lifespan by product: the makers' written terms
| Coating | Maker's term | What keeps it valid |
|---|---|---|
| XPEL FUSION PLUS LITE | 1 year | The entry tier, also the yearly top-off coat on PREMIUM (XPEL) |
| XPEL FUSION PLUS CLASSIC (7 µm) | 4 years | An inspection by an XPEL-certified installer every year, within 30 days of the anniversary; a missed one voids it (XPEL warranty, data sheet) |
| XPEL FUSION PLUS PREMIUM (21–22 µm) | 8 years | The annual inspection plus a LITE top-off (XPEL, data sheet) |
| Ceramic Pro Ultimate ION | Lifetime of the vehicle | Annual inspection; miss one and it becomes 7 years from the last inspection (Ceramic Pro) |
| Ceramic Pro Gold | Lifetime of the vehicle | Annual inspection; miss one and it becomes 5 years from the last inspection |
| Ceramic Pro Sport | 6 months | Applied by a certified installer |
| CarPro CQuartz UK 3.0 (enthusiast bottle) | "2 ~ 5 years" durability, no warranty | Your own prep and care; CarPro's Reload topper "every 3 months" (CarPro) |
Thicker films carry longer terms within XPEL's line, but every term is conditional. Count the inspections in the cost over the years you'll keep the car.
What happens to ceramic coating after 5 years?
It stops doing its job gradually. Kovalent, a coating maker, lists three signs: loss of hydrophobic performance, diminished gloss and slickness, and difficulty cleaning (Kovalent). In practice, water stops beading tightly, dirt clings and needs more than a gentle wash, and the slick feel goes. The paint underneath is the paint you had, with whatever the coating stopped from reaching it.
Before deciding it is gone, test a panel that has been washed and decontaminated, because a film of road grime on top hides how the coating itself performs; for its own DIY coating, CarPro's care routine includes an iron remover "every 3 to 6 months" (CarPro), while an installer coating follows its maker's rules and is decontaminated at the annual visit. If it is still flat, there are two routes. The same maker's top-up goes over its own coating at the annual visit. A new coating on a worn one of unknown make means polishing the old layer off first: layering, recoating and removal.
Does ceramic coating come with a warranty?
A professional coating does, from its maker, once the installer registers it; a bottle you apply yourself carries none. It covers the finish against slow chemical and sun damage, not physical damage. XPEL's CLASSIC warranty covers "oxidation, loss of gloss, UV damage, color fading" (XPEL warranty).
The maintenance requirements are the part owners miss:
- Inspection on the date. XPEL's must happen within 30 days before or after the anniversary, at the owner's cost, and proof of each visit must be kept; Ceramic Pro's within 30 days before it (Ceramic Pro).
- The maker's wash rules. XPEL recommends its rinse-free wash "every week" (XPEL care); Ceramic Pro asks for a wash "every two weeks", a pH between 5.0 and 9.0, and no brush car washes.
- Fine print. Ceramic Pro excludes cars used commercially and needs the car to stay registered in North America. XPEL's remedy is to replace the coating or refund it, capped at the cost of the application or a fixed dollar ceiling, whichever is lower.

How long does ceramic coating last in the LA sun?
Sun is what a coating is warranted against, but it is also the reason coatings wear faster on some cars than others. Ceramic Pro lists UV radiation among the things that shorten a coating's life (Ceramic Pro), and its aftercare warns that droppings, sap and other sticky debris left on a coating in sun and heat can bond to it (Ceramic Pro aftercare).
Los Angeles gets a lot of it. NOAA's daily UV Index forecasts for 2025 put Los Angeles at 8 or higher, which EPA calls very high to extreme (EPA), on 145 days (NOAA):
| City | Very high (8–10) | Extreme (11+) | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | 130 | 15 | 145 |
| Chicago | 57 | 0 | 57 |
| Seattle | 22 | 0 | 22 |

The dry season adds to it: Downtown LA averages 0.24 inches of rain from June to September, out of 14.25 a year (NOAA normals), so dust, droppings and sap sit until someone removes them. Every factor on Ceramic Pro's list applies in full to a car that lives outdoors here, so the yearly inspection is worth keeping even where no warranty requires it. Two habits help: wash in shade, early or late, never on a hot panel, and park the car in shade for its first days after the coating goes on. How heat affects the application itself: Los Angeles weather and coating.
Is ceramic coating worth it if you park on the street?
Yes, for what it does: a car that lives at the curb collects more droppings, sap, dust and ash, and a coating lets them go in a gentle wash. It is not worth it as protection against the street's other risks: key scratches, chips and other physical damage are excluded from both warranties above.
Trees and sprinklers are the two LA hazards to watch:
- Trees. Ceramic Pro's aftercare says to "avoid parking under trees", because sap, leaves and branches "can cause etching and scratching" (Ceramic Pro). Jacarandas bloom from late April to mid-June (LAist).
- Sprinklers. In the City of LA, outdoor watering is banned from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and sprinklers run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at odd-numbered addresses and Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at even ones (LADWP). A car at the curb by a lawn takes hard tap water overnight and dries in the morning sun.

Making a coating last on a street-parked car
- Spot-clean droppings, sap and bugs within a few days, with a detail spray and a soft microfiber, not a dry towel.
- Park away from sprinkler heads on your neighbors' watering days, or rinse and dry the car the morning after.
- Dry the car by hand after every wash and every sprinkler hit.
- Hand wash as the routine; a touchless wash only now and then (XPEL's warranty excludes automatic-wash damage); never a brush tunnel.
- Book the annual inspection inside its 30-day window, and keep the proof.
- For chips on the hood and bumper, add paint protection film; a coating can go over it.
Hard water damage on a ceramic coated car
Every LADWP (City of LA) zone is hard water: the 2022 averages are 8.6, 9.8 and 16.3 grains per gallon, where more than 7 counts as hard, and LADWP notes that softened water leaves "fewer water spots on air-dried dishes and automobile finishes" (LADWP). A coating makes water bead into tighter drops, and each drop that dries leaves a ring of minerals (IGL).
IGL, a coating maker, describes three stages: mineral deposits sitting on top, minerals bonded to the surface, then etching. A coating acts as "the sacrificial layer", so at the third stage the coating, not the clear coat, takes the damage (IGL). That is why both XPEL and Ceramic Pro exclude water spots: they are a maintenance problem, and XPEL's instruction is to "never allow water to evaporate on its own" (XPEL care).
Removing water spots from a coated car: wash and dry first, then the coating maker's mild step for what is left, and stop there; an etched spot needs a polish that takes the coating off that area, then a re-coat (IGL). The steps: how to remove water spots from a ceramic coating; etched spots on paint: how to remove water spots from car paint.

When to call a pro
Our ceramic coating is XPEL FUSION PLUS CLASSIC, with PREMIUM as the extended tier, applied wherever the car is parked, the street included, after a decontamination wash and a one-step machine polish, over two visits. The installer registers XPEL's warranty, and the annual inspection visit, with a maintenance wash and a top-up, is a priced add-on on the same page. For chips, add paint protection film; for the washes a coating needs, a membership.
Questions
Does a ceramic coating warranty transfer when I sell the car?
It can, on the maker's terms. XPEL's CLASSIC warranty transfers when the new owner shows proof of the original installation date, and covers only the remainder of the term (XPEL warranty). Ceramic Pro's transfers only if the new owner attends the annual service; otherwise the cover drops to 1 year from the last service (Ceramic Pro). Keep the warranty card, the receipt and the inspection records with the car's papers.
Can rain or fog in the first days shorten a coating's life?
It can. Ceramic Pro says rain, sprinklers and water "including foggy conditions" during the cure "may impact the coatings durability" and can leave spots, and asks for no wash for at least two weeks (Ceramic Pro). Cure times differ by maker; keep the car dry the first night and follow your installer's schedule.
How often does a ceramic coating need a top-up?
How long does ceramic coating last compared with wax or sealant?
Years against weeks to months. A wax or sealant rests on the paint and is reapplied several times a year; a coating bonds to it and is rated in years. The side-by-side comparison, with how long each one lasts: which is better, wax or ceramic coating.
