How to Clean the Steering Wheel, Dashboard, Screens and Interior Glass

To clean the steering wheel, wipe it with a soft cloth dampened with warm water and a mild cleaner, then dry it. Keep solvents, alcohol gels and sprays off the wheel, its airbag cover and its buttons. The same rules hold for the dash and screens: product on the cloth, never sprayed, and a matte dash left matte.

How to clean the steering wheel

  1. 01

Know what the rim is made of

Leather, synthetic leather, Alcantara, wood or plastic each take a different product, and a heated wheel has wiring under the cover. Your owner's manual has the last word on all of them.

  2. 02

Work on a cool wheel, in shade

In a test of cars parked in the sun, dashboards averaged 157°F after one hour (ASU and UC San Diego, 2018). On a hot surface the cleaner dries before you can wipe it off.

  3. 03

    Dust it first

A dry microfiber over the rim, and a soft brush along the stitching and around the buttons. GM's rule: "Never use a STIFF brush" (GM).

  4. 04

Put the cleaner on the cloth, never on the wheel

Tesla's method is a soft cloth "dampened with a mixture of warm water and mild non-detergent cleaner" (Tesla). The center pad is an airbag cover: Ford says to use no chemical solvents or strong detergents on the steering wheel "to avoid contamination of the airbag system" (Ford), and Tesla says not to let any substance enter an airbag cover.

  5. 05

    Go round in sections

The front of the rim, the back, the thumb grips and the spokes, turning to a clean face of the cloth as it picks up grime. Wipe the buttons with a cloth that is barely damp, so nothing runs into the gaps.

  6. 06

Rinse off the residue, then dry

Honda's manual: "Use a clean cloth to remove detergent residue" (Honda). Cleaner left on the rim is what makes a wheel feel tacky. Finish with a dry microfiber.

  7. 07

Condition leather only lightly, if at all

On real leather, a water-based conditioner with a low-gloss finish is enough; a grip should never be left slick. More on leather care: leather seat care.

Keep it clean between washes. Most of what ends up on a steering wheel comes from your hands. Tesla says to drive with clean, dry hands, to "wipe off excess hand cream, sunscreen, and other fluids" before touching the wheel and to keep alcohol-based hand sanitizer off it (Tesla). Ford says to wash your hands after insect repellent and suntan lotion, which can damage interior painted surfaces, and to wipe up any hand sanitizer or air freshener spill at once: "Damage may not be covered by your warranty" (Ford). If sunscreen is part of your morning, this is the habit that saves the wheel.

Why does my dashboard look dull after cleaning?

There are three reasons, and only one of them is a problem.

  1. It is meant to be matte. GM writes that today's interiors "are developed and intended to have a low-gloss appearance", and that silicone, wax-based or solvent products raise the gloss unevenly, which "may cause annoying reflections in the windshield" (GM). Tesla: "Do not polish the upper surfaces of the dashboard" (Tesla). Consumer Reports warns off sprays that leave the dash "looking wet or glossy, because that can create glare on the windshield" (Consumer Reports). A satin dash after cleaning is the factory finish.
  2. Residue. GM: "Using too much soap will leave residue that leaves streaks and attracts dirt", and laundry detergents and degreasing dish soaps are out. A cloudy or streaky dash needs a second wipe with a cloth dampened with plain water, then a dry one, the way Ford cleans its instrument panel (Ford).
  3. A product that attacked the surface. GM says "permanent damage may result" from cleaners used on surfaces they are not intended for, rules out scented or bleach wipes, and treats color on the test cloth or a changed look in a hidden spot as signs of chemical attack. Honda adds that "chemicals and liquid aromatics may cause discoloration, wrinkles, and cracking" to plastic parts (Honda). If one patch looks lighter, blotchy or sticky after a product, stop using it there.

To protect a dash from sun, use a UV protectant that dries to a low-gloss finish, and clean it in shade with the surface cool.

Touchscreens and displays: never spray the screen

Should an interior cleaner be sprayed directly on a navigation screen? No. Spray the cloth, and only with a product your manual allows. Hyundai's manual: "Never allow water or other liquids to come in contact with electrical/electronic components inside the vehicle because this may damage them" (Hyundai). Honda warns that electrical devices "may malfunction if liquids are splashed on them" (Honda).

For the wipe itself, Tesla is the most specific: "a soft lint-free cloth specifically designed to clean monitors and displays", no glass cleaner, no alcohol-based gel, no wet wipe and no "dry statically-charged cloth (such as a recently washed microfiber)". It also has a Screen Clean Mode, so a wipe doesn't press buttons or change settings (Tesla). If your car has no such mode, wipe it with the car off.

The sources disagree on alcohol. Consumer Reports wipes screens with isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber and never with an ammonia-based cleaner, "which might damage a screen's anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coatings" (Consumer Reports); Tesla rules alcohol products out. Your manual decides. If it says nothing, start with the gentlest step, a clean display cloth, and add a cleaner only if the screen maker or carmaker approves one. Gloss-black trim around the screen scratches the same way, so it gets the same cloth and the same light hand.

The best way to clean interior car windows

  1. 01

    Do the glass last

After the dash, wheel and doors, so no drip or overspray lands on clean glass.

  2. 02

Spray the cloth, not the glass

Consumer Reports uses an automotive glass cleaner on a soft cloth and says to "spray the cloth and not the glass", which keeps cleaner off the dash and the upholstery (Consumer Reports).

  3. 03

    Use two cloths

"Apply the product with one, and wipe the glass clean with the other" (Consumer Reports). The dry cloth is what removes the streaks.

  4. 04

Follow the wires on the rear window

Honda: "Wipe along the same direction as the wires with a soft cloth so as not to damage them" (Honda). Never scrape the glass or use an abrasive cleaner on it.

  5. 05

Keep fluid away from the mirror housing

Honda's manual says not to spill water or glass cleaner on or around the cover of the electrical components around the rearview mirror (Honda).

Vents, switches and the A/C system

From inside the car, cleaning the HVAC system means three things: the vents, the cabin air filter and, if it smells, the A/C itself.

  • Vents and switches: a small paintbrush or soft toothbrush, as Consumer Reports suggests for vents, seams and cup holders, worked in front of the vacuum nozzle. No liquid sprayed into the louvers or onto switches.
  • Cabin air filter: replace it at the interval in your owner's manual, and again after heavy smoke; why it matters for a smell is in the smoke odor guide.
  • A musty smell when the A/C starts: that is moisture on the evaporator, not dust in the vents, and a vent spray won't reach it. See how to get mildew smell out of a car.

A vent-clip air freshener is a liquid near plastic: Ford says not to let air fresheners spill onto interior surfaces and to wipe a spill off at once (Ford).

Professional help

When to call a pro

Call a pro when the wheel's leather has turned shiny and tacky, when a dash shows blotches or streaks from a product, or when you'd rather not put a cloth to a large screen and gloss-black trim yourself. In an interior detail we clean the dash, console, door panels, cup holders and steering wheel by hand, finish plastics with a UV protectant, wipe screens and gloss-black trim with a display cloth only, never glass cleaner or alcohol, and do the glass last. A leather wheel is cleaned by hand, never steamed, and finished low-gloss in a leather clean and condition. What a full interior detail covers: what interior detailing is.

Steering wheel, dash and screen cleaning FAQ

Is Vaseline good for a car interior?

No. It is a skin product, and carmakers tell you to keep skin products off the interior: Tesla says to wipe excess hand cream and sunscreen off before touching the steering wheel, and Hyundai warns that cosmetic oil can damage or discolor interior parts (Hyundai). On the dash, a greasy shine is the gloss GM, Ford and Tesla tell you to avoid because it reflects in the windshield. For protection, use a low-gloss interior protectant made for the material.

Can one cleaner handle both leather seats and plastic trim?

Often, yes. GM's own interior cleaner is labeled for leather, vinyl, plastic and interior paint, and GM's rule is a mild, neutral-pH product put on the towel (GM). The exceptions: screens get a display cloth, Alcantara gets a dry brush and a barely damp cloth, and some makers allow nothing but water and mild soap on leather, so check the manual. Real leather still gets its own conditioner afterwards.

How do I disinfect a steering wheel without damaging it?

Consumer Reports lists the steering wheel first among the frequently touched surfaces to clean, and calls soap and water "safe and effective" (Consumer Reports). For a disinfectant, use only one your carmaker allows: GM tested a short list, rules out scented or bleach wipes and says to test any product in a hidden spot first (GM). Keep alcohol gel off a Tesla wheel and high-alcohol products off any leather one.

Why is my leather steering wheel shiny or sticky?

Grime on the leather's top coat, much of it from hands: skin oil, lotion, sunscreen or sanitizer, the things Tesla says to keep off the wheel. GM says leather should be cleaned regularly "so that the dirt and grime do not adversely affect the top coat" (GM). Clean it with a mild cleaner on a cloth, rinse the residue off with a damp cloth and dry it; don't add a glossy dressing to bring the look back.
