How Often Should You Wash Your Car? Frequency, Time of Day, Rain and LA Seasons
Wash a daily-driven car about every two weeks, the interval AAA cites, and any car at least once a month, as Hyundai's owner's manual asks. Wash weekly if it's parked under trees, near the beach or where birds perch, and remove bird droppings or sap the same day. In LA, wash early or late, in shade, on cool panels.

How often to wash your car: a schedule by situation
| Your car | How often | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Garaged, driven a few times a week | At least once a month | Hyundai: "wash it thoroughly and frequently at least once a month" (Hyundai) |
| Daily driver, parked in a driveway, lot or on the street | Every two weeks | AAA's figure: industry experts recommend washing "about every two weeks" (AAA) |
| Parked under trees, near the beach, or where birds perch | Weekly, and droppings or sap off the same day | Honda says to wash more often in coastal areas and when tar, soot, bird droppings, insects or tree sap stick to the paint (Honda); Hyundai says such deposits "can damage your vehicle's finish if not removed immediately" |
| Ceramic-coated | Every one to two weeks | Ceramic Pro: "every two weeks to avoid excessive contamination build-up" (Ceramic Pro); XPEL suggests its rinse-free wash "every week" on FUSION PLUS (XPEL) |
| Wrapped in color PPF | Every two weeks or about 600 miles | XPEL's interval for its COLOR film (XPEL) |
| Dusted with wildfire ash | As soon as you can, gently | LA County Public Health: a gentle hose spray first, then mild detergent; "Avoid scrubbing dry ash, as it can scratch paint" (Public Health) |
How long can you go without washing a car? Nothing breaks on a date, but past a month you're below Hyundai's floor, and in an LA summer no rain rinses the car in between. Ash needs care of its own: does wildfire ash damage car paint.
What decides how often you need a wash
Six things move a car up or down that table:
- Where it sleeps. A garage keeps off sun, sap, droppings and sprinkler spray; a street spot under a ficus or jacaranda collects all four.
- How far it's driven. Road film and brake dust build with miles, which is why XPEL sets its film interval in miles as well as weeks.
- The coast. Santa Monica, the South Bay and Long Beach are the "coastal areas" in which Honda asks for more frequent washing.
- Paint color. Dark paint shows dust sooner and runs hotter: in a Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory test, a silver roof stayed up to 45°F cooler than a black one in the sun (LBNL). Ceramic Pro warns that sticky debris left in sun and heat can bond to its coating.
- Protection. Wax, sealant or a coating makes each wash quicker and safer, not rarer: the coating makers above still set one- to two-week intervals.
- The season. Downtown LA averages 0.24 inches of rain from June through September (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), so summer dust stays until someone removes it.
What happens if you never wash a car
The damage is slow, then permanent. Dust settles first, and some of it is acidic: the EPA calls that dry deposition and says acidic particles "corrode metal and cause paint and stone to deteriorate more quickly" (EPA). Droppings, sap and insects etch the clear coat where they sit. Wheels suffer too: Honda notes that aluminum "is susceptible to deterioration caused by salt and other road contaminants", and that a scratch in the paint can lead to body rust.
A neglected car is also harder to clean safely. Wiping a thick layer of grit drags it across the paint, which is how swirls start (will a car wash damage my vehicle), and spots left to bake for months may need polishing rather than washing (water spot removal). So yes, washing matters: it keeps paint, wheels and glass from reaching the point where only a polisher or a body shop can help.
Do cars run or drive better after a wash?
No mechanical part runs better clean: a wash never touches the engine, tires or fuel system. Three things do change.
- You see better. Clean glass, mirrors and lights matter most at night and into low sun.
- Driver-assist sensors see better. Hyundai warns that when the windshield area in front of the camera, the radar cover, the bumper or a sensor "is covered with foreign material", Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist can be limited or switched off until it's clean (Hyundai).
- The brakes can be wet. Right after a wash they may grab less. Hyundai says to test them while driving slowly; Honda says to drive a short distance and apply them several times before parking, because wet brakes left parked can stick from rust (Honda).
Does detailing extend a car's lifespan? It extends the life of what it cleans and protects (paint, wheels, trim, upholstery), by keeping contaminants and rust off. It does nothing for the drivetrain. How often to book a full detail: how often should you detail your car.
The best time of day to wash a car in LA heat
The clock matters less than the panel. Hyundai says never to wash "in direct sunlight or when the body of the vehicle is warm"; Consumer Reports adds that a car just driven, or parked in the sun for a while, is too hot (Consumer Reports); Ceramic Pro's line is any surface "warm to the touch". Shampoo and water dry on a hot panel before you can rinse or dry them, and LA tap water leaves spots: LADWP's 2022 zone averages for the City of LA are 8.6, 9.8 and 16.3 grains per gallon, above its 7-grain "hard" line (LADWP).
Heat is a real constraint here. Pierce College in Woodland Hills averages about 36 days a year at 100°F or more (NOAA). On those days, move the car into shade or a garage and wait until the paint is cool to the touch, then wash and dry one panel at a time.
| When | For | Against |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Panels at their coolest; the sun is low | LADWP bans outdoor watering from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., so sprinklers run before and after (LADWP): park clear of their spray |
| Midday | Only in a garage, a parking structure or full shade | Sun on the paint dries soap and water into spots |
| Late afternoon and early evening | Panels cooling once the car is in shade | Sprinklers start again after 4 p.m.; finish drying before dark |
| Night | Fine in a well-lit garage | Outdoors you can't see grit, streaks or missed spots, which is why most advice says not to |
When not to wash at all: on a hot panel, in wind that blows dust onto wet paint, with no shade and no way to dry the car at once, or within the first days of a new coating or film (see the FAQ below).
Is it pointless to wash your car if it's going to rain?
No. Rain doesn't wash a car: it loosens some dust, then dries and leaves behind whatever it carried and picked up. A clean car with intact wax, sealant or coating sheds the rain, and the next wash is quick. A dirty one turns the dust into a film that dries onto the paint. Hyundai's rule for knowing when protection has worn off: "Wax the vehicle when water will no longer bead on the paint."
Should you wash after rain in LA? Usually yes, once the rain has passed. Downtown LA gets about 11.6 of its 14.25 yearly inches from December through March (NOAA), and the first storms land on months of dry-season dust. A wash and a hand-dry then removes the spots before they set; ones that have etched are covered in how to remove water spots from car paint.
The exception is a freshly coated car. Ceramic Pro, for its coatings, asks owners to keep rain, sprinklers and fog off during a two- to three-week cure; ask your installer what your coating needs.
When to wash and detail through the LA year
| Months | What lands on the car | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| December–March (the rainy months) | Rain spots, mud in wheel wells, road film | Wash and dry after storms; keep protection on so water beads |
| April–June (spring) | Pollen, then jacaranda blossoms, whose stickiness is aphid honeydew (LAPL) | The spring detail: flush the underbody and wheel wells (Hyundai asks for it "at the end of each winter"), clean the interior after the wet months, and seal the paint before summer |
| July–September (dry heat) | Dust, droppings and sap that bake on | Wash every one to two weeks in the cool hours; droppings off the same day; park in shade |
| October–November (before the rain) | The last of the summer dust | The fall detail: decontaminate and add sealant or a coating before the first storms |
| Santa Ana days (September–May) | Dry, gusty wind from the deserts (NWS); dust, and ash when there are fires | Rinse before you touch the paint; never wipe dust or ash dry; postpone polishing and coating to a still day |
The best time to detail a car in LA is October or November, so the paint goes into the rainy months protected, with spring the second choice, to clean up after them. The worst weather for detailing is wind (dust lands on wet paint and fresh product), direct sun and heat (water and product dry too fast) and rain or fog on a new coating. A wax or sealant, and which to choose: mobile car wax service and wax or ceramic coating.
Signs your car needs a wash now
- Bird droppings, sap or sticky honeydew on the paint or glass: same day
- Ash after a fire nearby: a gentle rinse first, never a dry wipe
- Water no longer beads on the paint: wash, then wax or seal
- A film on the windshield, the camera area or the sensors
- A day at the beach or a drive along the coast
- The first rain after a dry spell
- Dust you can write your name in (wash it as in how to wash a car step by step)

When to call a pro
The schedule is the part most people let slip. A car wash membership books a hand wash where the car is parked (home, office or building garage) every week, every two weeks or once a month, on a set day: in shade or on cooled panels, hand-dried for LA's hard water, with the interior vacuumed, and rain moves a visit at no charge. Plans are priced by car size; for a single visit, book a mobile car wash.
Questions
Can you wash your car too often?
Not if the method is gentle. Damage comes from grit dragged across the paint by a dirty mitt, brushes or a dry wipe, not from how often the car is washed; XPEL even suggests a rinse-free wash every week on its FUSION PLUS coating. Which wash methods scratch: will a car wash damage my vehicle.
How often should you wax or seal your car?
When water stops beading on the paint, Hyundai's rule; a coated car needs no wax on top. Intervals by product: how often should I wax my car.
How soon can you wash a car after ceramic coating or PPF?
It depends on the product, so follow your installer's sheet. Coatings, maker by maker: how long before you drive or wash; film: how long does PPF last.
How often should you clean the car's interior?
Vacuum at every wash or every other one; when a full interior detail is due: how often should you detail your car interior. A membership visit vacuums the seats, carpets, mats and trunk and wipes the dash and doors every time.
