How to Detail a Tesla: Steps, Interior, White Seats, Paint and Other EVs

Detail a Tesla in the usual order (wash, decontaminate, polish only if needed, protect, then the interior), but inside Tesla's limits: nothing above pH 13, no acids, no chemical wheel cleaners or harsh abrasives, and only mild soap and water on the seats. Never spray the charge port with a pressure washer while the car is charging.

How to detail a Tesla, step by step

  1. 01

    Set the car up

Unplug it first: Tesla warns never to spray water at high velocity toward the charge port while the car is charging. Work in the shade, on cool panels, and turn on Car Wash Mode so the wipers stay off and the doors don't lock on you. What that mode does and how to turn it on is in can you take a Tesla through a car wash.

  2. 02

    Wash

Rinse, then wash from the roof down with a mild, pH-neutral car shampoo and a clean mitt. Do the wheels last, with their own mitt and brush. If you use a pressure washer, keep the nozzle at least 12 inches (30 cm) from the paint and keep it moving.

  3. 03

    Decontaminate

Read the label on any iron or tar remover before it goes near the paint, trim or glass: Tesla's limit is pH 13, and no acidic products. Clay the paint only if it still feels rough after washing: see is clay bar treatment worth it.

  4. 04

Chips first, then polish if you need to

Tesla's order is to fill chips with its touch-up pen after washing and before any polishing or waxing. For polishing, Tesla approves a polish with a very mild abrasive, plus fillers and wax. Start with the mildest product and pad that does the job, and measure the paint before any machine work.

  5. 05

    Protect

Apply a sealant, wax or coating to clean, cool paint. Water-repellent coating goes on the side and rear windows only.

  6. 06

    Interior

Vacuum, including the frunk and trunk, then clean surface by surface as in the table below. Spray the cloth, not the surface.

  7. 07

    Glass and cameras

Clean the glass and glass roof with an automotive glass cleaner, then wipe every camera lens with a clean microfiber. EVs have no engine bay to degrease; the frunk only needs a vacuum and a damp cloth. Why degreasing is a different job on a gas car is covered in is engine bay cleaning safe.

Does a white Tesla interior get dirty?

White vegan leather gets no dirtier than black, but it shows more, and dye is the real problem. Tesla's manual warns that dyes and oils from clothing, accessories and cosmetics can transfer to the seats over time, that these stains are hard to prevent, and that they "cannot always be safely cleaned off" (Tesla). New dark denim is the usual culprit.

What Tesla allows, in this order:

  1. Microfiber, warm water and mild soap, wiped in small circles, then dried.
  2. On white seats only, and only as a last resort: a cloth moistened with warm water and isopropyl alcohol, followed by a damp cloth to take off the residue. Tesla warns that aggressive or extended alcohol use damages the top coat, which makes stains take hold more easily, and violates the warranty. Never use it on black seats.

Since Tesla does not recommend protectants or conditioners on its vegan leather, the defense is frequency, not a product. Our advice, not Tesla's: a regular damp-cloth wipe, weekly if the seats see dark denim, catches dye while it is still on the surface.

Interior windshield residue: what the alert means and what you can clean

The alert means the car has detected a layer of hazy residue on the windshield that is blocking a camera's view. While it shows, Tesla says some or all Autopilot features may be limited, but the car is fine to drive (Tesla alerts).

What you can clean. Tesla's first check is the outside of the glass, for dirt, mist, ice, snow and wiper streaks. Clean the outside of the windshield with glass cleaner on one microfiber and dry it with a second, as Tesla's own procedure starts, and look at the wiper blades for streaking. Inside, wipe the windshield like any interior glass, with no scraper and no abrasive cleaner (Tesla, Cybertruck interior). Keep alcohol wipes off it: Tesla's procedure for this glass warns that unapproved isopropyl wipes "may damage the hydrophobic coating on the windshield" (Tesla service manual).

What you can't. We found no Tesla source that says what forms the film. The alert points to the inside of the windshield at the camera area, and Tesla's technicians reach that glass by removing the rear-view mirror and the camera covers, then reset the cameras in Service Mode (Tesla service manual). If the outside is clean and the alert comes back on your next drive, Tesla says to schedule service to have the inside of the windshield camera area cleaned (Tesla alerts). That makes it a Tesla service job, not a detailing one. The glass the owner can reach is part of a regular Tesla detail.

Do Teslas scratch easily, and can a scratch be buffed out?

We found no paint hardness or thickness figure published by Tesla, so "Teslas have soft paint" comes from detailers' experience, not from a spec. The one formal measurement we found covers a single car: in 2019, a goods inspection ordered through Finland's Central Chamber of Commerce rated a Model 3's paint at pencil hardness F, against the 2H–3H level The Drive calls standard for many brands, with an average of 106 microns against the 110–150 microns the inspector gives as normal for cars in that price range, and readings in the low 70s in places (The Drive). One car proves nothing about every Tesla, but it is a good reason to treat the paint gently.

Two things are certain. Chips are on you: Tesla's warranty treats paint and glass stone chips as normal wear (Tesla warranty). And wash technique prevents most swirls.

Can it be buffed out? If the scratch is only in the clear coat and your fingernail glides over it, a polish usually removes it or makes it much less visible. If your nail catches, the scratch is through the clear coat: touch-up paint or a body shop, not more polishing. On paint that may be thin, measure it before any machine work. The full test is in does paint correction remove scratches; for chips, film is the answer: does PPF protect against rock chips.

Is the Tesla detailing kit worth it?

Tesla's Model SX3Y Detailing Kit is a spot-cleaning kit for touch-ups between washes (Tesla shop). It holds a travel case, four microfiber towels, an interior detailer for the dash, console, doors and steering wheel, a glass cleaner, an exterior detailer and an all-purpose cleaner that, diluted, is sold for stains on upholstery, leather and fabric.

It is worth it if you want Tesla-labeled sprays in a case in the trunk. It is not a detailing kit in the full sense: there is no wash shampoo, mitt, wheel brush or vacuum, so you still need those for the steps above. On the seats, start with Tesla's own manual method, water and mild soap, before reaching for the all-purpose cleaner.

So yes, you can detail an electric vehicle, and it is safe when you follow the maker's manual. What changes is a short list: never wash while the car is charging, keep high-pressure water off seals, sensors and the charge port, and skip the engine-bay degreaser because there is no engine. Beyond that, the three manuals agree on the basics: a mild car shampoo, no harsh cleaners, and a damp cloth rather than a wet seat.

Professional help

When to call a pro

Rather have it done to the same rules? Our Tesla detailing follows Tesla's manual: pH-neutral shampoo, Car Wash Mode on, a display cloth on the screen and mild soap on vegan leather. We come to wherever the car is parked. For chips, film by model is on the Tesla PPF page; for a cabin that needs more than a wipe, see interior detailing.

Detailing a Tesla: more questions

Does detailing void a Tesla's warranty?

No. Washing and detailing are normal care. What the warranty excludes is damage caused by cleaning solutions or tools the owner's manual does not recommend, so a degreaser that stains trim, or alcohol that wears the seat's top coat, is your cost (Tesla).

Can you steam clean Tesla seats?

Tesla's manual does not cover steam; it calls for a damp cloth on the seats and warns against over-wetting carpets. Lucid's manual goes further and forbids steam and upholstery cleaners on its seats, because moisture can damage the occupancy sensor that the airbag system relies on (Lucid). On any EV, keep steam off the seats.

How do you detail a Cybertruck?

Differently. Tesla says Cybertruck has no clear coat, so there is nothing to polish: scratches are in the stainless steel and need Tesla's own refinishing procedure. Tesla advises against automatic washes for it, allows a non-ionic, pH-neutral waterless wash, and says orange iron spots are not rust (Tesla).

Is it safe to detail a Tesla in the sun?

Not the wash or the protection steps. Tesla says not to wash a Cybertruck in direct sunlight (Tesla), Lucid warns that water and cleaners dry faster on a hot surface and leave spots, and Rivian says to apply wax or coating only to a cool car, never in direct sun. In Los Angeles that means a garage, shade or an early start.
