Does Paint Correction Remove Scratches? What It Can and Can't Fix

Paint correction removes scratches that sit in the clear coat, the top layer of factory paint and only about 35–50 microns thick: swirls, wash marring and light lines. It softens deeper scratches but cannot remove those that reach the color, primer or metal. Chips, dents, peeling clear coat and rust need touch-up, dent repair or a repaint.

Car scratch types, by the layer they reach

Factory paint is a stack of coatings. Axalta, which supplies carmakers' paint shops, lists four kinds: an electrocoat, with "superior corrosion protection"; a primer, for "film smoothness and excellent adhesion"; a basecoat, for the color; and a clearcoat, for "finish protection, gloss, and appearance" (Axalta). DeFelsko, a maker of paint thickness gauges, puts the clear coat at 1.5–2.0 mils (35–50 microns) and the whole factory finish at 4–7 mils (100–180 microns) (DeFelsko).

Polishing works only in that top layer. It takes clear coat off around a scratch until the surface is level with the scratch's bottom, so the line is gone rather than filled. A scratch deeper than the clear coat a panel can spare can be made less visible, never removed. So the question for any scratch is which layer it reaches: the clear coat, where polishing works, or the color, primer or metal below it, where paint has to go back on.

The fingernail test is a rule of thumb. A paint thickness gauge and a polished test section decide, because the same scratch can be removable on full factory paint and not on a panel that was polished hard before. Most carmakers recommend removing no more than 0.3 mil (8 microns) of clear coat (DeFelsko), so a correction takes the least that fixes the defect.

What paint correction can and cannot fix

Correction levels the clear coat. Anything that is not a defect in the clear coat, from a dent to failed paint, is outside what a polisher can do.

Will paint correction make my car look new? It brings back the gloss and clarity of the clear coat, which is most of what makes paint look new. Chips, dents, deep scratches and failing paint stay.

Can it remove all scratches? No. Some scratches are deeper than the clear coat, and on others removing the line would take more clear coat than the panel can spare. A careful correction tells you which marks will stay before the whole car is done. How the work runs, step by step: the paint correction process.

What detailers use to remove scratches, and what only hides them

Detailers remove scratches by abrasion. A dual-action machine polisher runs a pad with a cutting compound to level the defect, then a finer polish takes out the haze the compound leaves, and a paint thickness gauge shows how much clear coat is left. Our crews use RUPES polishers with Koch-Chemie compounds and polishes. Light scratches can also be worked by hand: Meguiar's sells its compound for hand or dual-action use (Meguiar's).

What hides scratches instead. A glaze "enhances the paint's appearance by filling in minor scratches", with no protection, while a polish "removes scratches and swirls" (Chemical Guys). Fillers are the honest answer to what a seller can use to hide scratches on a car for sale: the lines come back as the filler wears off, and Chemical Guys suggests reapplying glaze "whenever you notice it losing its sparkle". Look at a used car after a wash, in the sun.

Scratch repair pens. A touch-up pen adds paint rather than removing anything. Dupli-Color's Scratch Fix All-in-1, for example, combines an abrasive prep tip for loose paint and rust, color-matched paint and a clear coat (Dupli-Color). That suits a chip or a scratch through to the color; on a fine clear-coat scratch, polishing removes the line instead of painting over it.

Keyed car vs scratch: how to tell, and what to do

A keyed scratch is usually one long, deliberate line, often running across more than one panel at about hand height. Accidental scratches from a bag, a bush or a bike tend to be shorter, curved or scattered. The depth matters more than the cause: most key scratches go through the clear coat, so polishing only softens them and touch-up paint or a body shop fixes them. Run your fingernail along the whole line, not one spot.

A keyed car is vandalism. California Penal Code 594 makes it vandalism to maliciously deface, damage or destroy property that is not yours (Penal Code 594). Comprehensive coverage pays for damage "caused by something other than a collision, such as fire, theft, vandalism", and it carries a deductible (California Department of Insurance), so compare the repair quote with your deductible before you claim.

  • Photograph every panel the line crosses, close up and from a few feet away, before anything is washed or polished.
  • Report it. Where the LA County Sheriff polices, its online form takes vandalism (not graffiti) with damage valued under 400 dollars (LASD); otherwise, contact the station.
  • Check your policy for comprehensive coverage and its deductible.
  • Have the depth judged before anyone polishes: scratch removal if the line sits in the clear coat, a body shop if it reaches primer or metal.

Is this clear coat failure?

Oxidation and clear coat failure both start as dull paint, but only one polishes out.

  • Oxidation is an even dullness or haze over paint that still feels smooth. A test section with compound and polish shows whether the gloss comes back.
  • Clear coat failure has edges: a cloudy or chalky patch, fine cracks, or clear film lifting and flaking off the color. Once it peels there is nothing left to polish.

Honda's own bulletin shows what a carmaker does about it. Service Bulletin 14-034 extended the paint warranty on some 2006–13 Civics whose paint on the hood and front fenders "may crack or look chalky or cloudy", with the roof, trunk and upper quarter panels and doors also turning chalky or cloudy. The repair was not a polish: the affected areas were sanded, down to the metal on the hood and fenders, then repainted (Honda SB 14-034).

Is clear coat failure related to paint color? To particular paints more than to color as such. Honda's extension listed ten paint codes, dark blues, blacks and gray or titanium metallics, and stated: "If the paint code is not listed above, this bulletin does not apply." It also excluded "rock chips, scratches, bird droppings, sap": those are damage, not failure.

The sun drives the rest. BASF, which makes UV absorbers for automotive coatings, explains that UV weakens a coating's chemical bonds, causing "fading, cracking, and discoloration", and that once the coating is compromised water gets in, leading to "corrosion and cracks and eventually failure" (BASF).

How to prevent clear coat failure

PPG, a paint maker, lists what wears factory paint down in normal use: sunlight (UV radiation), heat, bird droppings, insect secretions, tree resin, industrial emissions, car care products and washing brushes (PPG). Prevention is keeping each of those off the clear coat or short on it:

  • Shade or cover. A garage, a carport or a fitted car cover cuts the hours of sun the clear coat takes.
  • A protective layer on top. A wax or sealant topped up on schedule, a ceramic coating or paint protection film. XPEL's FUSION PLUS CLASSIC warranty, for example, covers the paint finish against "oxidation, loss of gloss, UV damage, color fading" when professionally installed (XPEL); whatever the product, check the maker's own claim and keep the layer intact.
  • Droppings, sap and bugs off promptly. Kia's manual: "Insects, tar, tree sap, bird droppings, industrial pollution and similar deposits can damage your vehicle's finish if not removed immediately", and droppings "may damage painted surfaces in just a few hours" (Kia).
  • Gentle wash chemistry. Kia asks for "a mild soap, safe for use on painted surfaces", not strong soap, chemical detergents or hot water, and no washing in direct sun or on a warm body (Kia).
  • Act on the early signs. A patch that looks cloudy or chalky after a wash, or fine cracks on the roof, hood or trunk, is the time to protect the rest of the car and have that panel judged. Once the clear coat lifts, no product reattaches it.

Rock chips and rust: touch up first

Paint correction does not fix chips: a chip is paint that is gone, and polishing only removes more around it. Kia's owner's manual says why a chip should not wait: "Deep scratches or stone chips in the painted surface must be repaired promptly. Exposed metal will quickly rust" (Kia).

How to fix a tiny rock chip on paint

  1. 01

    Match the paint

Buy touch-up paint for your paint code, printed on a label in the door jamb on many cars (Honda's is on the driver's side, per its bulletin).

  2. 02

    Clean and prep

Wash the spot and wipe off wax and oil, then use the pen's abrasive tip to remove loose paint and any rust in the chip.

  3. 03

    Paint in thin coats

Dab color into the chip, not over the paint around it. Dupli-Color allows 30 minutes between coats.

  4. 04

    Seal with clear

Finish with the clear coat applicator.

  5. 05

    Mind the weather

Dupli-Color asks for 60–95°F and low humidity (Dupli-Color); work in shade.

Can detailing prevent rust? On intact paint it helps: washing removes what attacks the finish, and a sealant or coating adds a layer over the clear coat. It cannot protect metal that is already exposed; only touch-up paint or a repaint seals a chip. On the front of a car, chips are better prevented than repaired: does PPF protect against rock chips.

Professional help

When to call a pro

Send a sun-lit photo of the mark with a coin for scale. Scratches, swirls, water spots and oxidation in the clear coat are paint correction, quoted after the paint is measured and a test section is polished. A dent or door ding with the paint unbroken is paintless dent repair. Damage through to primer or metal, peeling clear coat and rust are body shop work, and we say so on the quote.

Questions

Does detailing remove scratches?

A wash or a full detail doesn't: our full detail seals the paint and leaves swirls and scratches to polishing. Our premium detail adds a one-step machine polish, which takes out light swirls and haze. Scratches you can see in the sun from a few feet away need a two-step correction, and anything through the clear coat needs paint.

Can scratches be buffed out by hand?

Light ones, slowly. Meguiar's sells its Ultimate Compound for use by hand or with a dual-action polisher and lists scratches among what it removes; apply it "in shade to a cool, clean surface", as the maker asks (Meguiar's). A scratch your fingernail catches won't buff out by hand or by machine.

Will WD-40 remove scratches in car paint?

No. Its maker says WD-40 Multi-Use Product "won't harm paint" and helps remove grime, adhesive residue and tar (WD-40); it makes no claim about scratches. An oily film can make a fine line harder to see until the next wash, which is filling, not removal.

Will wax or a ceramic coating hide scratches?

Wax and glaze fill only the finest marks, for a few washes (how to remove swirl marks); a ceramic coating is clear and hides nothing (will ceramic coating hide swirl marks or scratches).
