Paint Correction Before PPF in Los Angeles: Do You Need It First?

You need paint correction before PPF when the paint has swirls, haze or fine scratches you would still see through a clear film, because film seals in whatever is under it. MNG Mobile Car Detailing Beverly Hills checks the paint, corrects it where needed and fits the film across Los Angeles; one-step correction on a sedan is from $549.

Does PPF need paint correction first? The rule

Clear film is not a filler. It is a transparent layer over the paint, so the paint you film is the paint you look at for the life of the film. Swirls, haze and fine scratches that are there on the day stay there, under the film. XPEL says its film "can hide or minimize the appearance of pre-existing, surface level scratches" (XPEL FAQ): minimize, not remove. Once the film is on, the paint under it cannot be polished.

So the order is a decision about the finish you want to keep. If the paint is flawless, film goes straight on. If you can see defects you mind, they are leveled first, once, while the paint is bare. What correction is and how it is done: the paint correction process.

How to tell if your paint needs correction before PPF: check it yourself

  • Look in direct sun or under one strong light, panel by panel. Fine circles or a spider web on the hood, doors and roof are swirls. If you see them now, you will see them through the film.
  • Look at the reflection. A lights-on-the-ceiling reflection that is sharp means level paint; one that is hazy, dull or full of tiny arcs means the clear coat is marred.
  • Run a fingernail across each scratch. A line the nail glides over is in the clear coat and can be leveled; one it catches in has reached the color, and correction only softens it (which scratches come out).
  • Feel the paint after a wash. If it is rough, there is bonded contamination on it. That is cleared by the decontamination step before any film goes on, and it is not the same job as correction.
  • Note every repainted panel and every chip. A panel that is slightly different in color, texture or gloss was probably refinished, and a chip is a repair, not a polish: both are dealt with before film, and neither is fixed by polishing.
  • Check a new car too. Paint that looks fine in the shade can show marring in the sun, new or not.

What happens before PPF goes on, and in what order

Correction is the first of the steps, not an extra one beside them. At MNG the paint check comes first, so the defects are written down before anything is cut. Where it is needed, the correction follows. Then the car is prepared in the film maker's order: 3M's guidelines call for no coating left on the paint, wax, tar and sealant removed, clay, then a final wipe-down and inspection (3M). That last step is why a polish is never the last thing to touch the paint: polish oils, wax or sealant left behind are what the prep strips.

The film is then cut and fitted (how it is installed). It is all one booking with MNG Mobile Car Detailing Beverly Hills, with one set of notes about the paint from the first look to the hand-over.

Can you do your own paint correction before PPF?

You can polish your own car, but it is a poor first project for paint that is about to be sealed under film. Correction removes clear coat, and there is little to spare: a factory clear coat is 1.5–2.0 mils (35–50 microns) thick and a correction takes about 0.3 mil (8 microns) at most (DeFelsko). The people who do it well measure the paint with a gauge before they start, find the thin panels and repainted ones, and stop. A machine used without a gauge can leave holograms or go through the clear coat, and the film then keeps the damage in view. Residue is the other risk: the film maker's prep strips wax, sealant and tar for a reason, and polish oils left on the paint are no friendlier to the film.

If you want a reading on your paint first, book a quote with photos and the measurement, test section and level are quoted before any work. How long a correction takes: how long does paint correction take.

When correction is not the first step

  • Fresh paint. A repainted panel is not polished or filmed until its paint has cured; ask the shop which product it sprayed and follow that maker's sheet.
  • Thin or repainted paint. A gauge reading well above the rest of the car usually means a repaint. Correction is rationed there, or skipped, and the finish is filmed as it is.
  • A new car in good condition. Often the lightest step or none (a new car's paint).
  • Deep damage. Chips, deep scratches and dents are repaired as repairs; film over an open chip seals in a defect.

Whether film suits your car at all is a different question, answered in is PPF worth it.

Paint correction before PPF: more questions

Who does paint correction before PPF in Los Angeles?

MNG Mobile Car Detailing Beverly Hills, on (310) 555-0100: we check the paint, correct it where it needs it and fit the film, as one booking across Los Angeles. One-step correction on a sedan is from $549, and partial front film is from $1,699. Rated 5.0 from 217 reviews in Google, at work since 2017.

Does PPF hide swirl marks and scratches?

Only slightly. XPEL says its film "can hide or minimize the appearance of pre-existing, surface level scratches" (XPEL FAQ). Swirls and scratches are still there under the film, so if they bother you in the sun today, level them before the film goes on.

How do I know if my car needs paint correction before PPF?

Look at the paint in direct sun, panel by panel. Fine circles, a hazy reflection or scratches your fingernail glides over mean correction is worth doing before film; sharp, level gloss means it is not. The photo quote confirms it, and the check-your-paint list above has the steps.

Can I polish my own car before PPF?

You can, but a correction takes only about 8 microns of a 35–50 micron clear coat, so the paint is measured first (DeFelsko), and polish residue must be gone before film. Most owners book it with the film. A measured one-step correction on a sedan is from $549; more on the process.

Do I need paint correction before PPF on a new car?

Not always. A new car often needs only the wash and decontamination before film, or the lightest one-step if the sun shows marring. Check each panel in direct sun, and ask for the gauge readings if any panel looks different (a new car's paint).
